This is some dystopian lord of the flies hell. Those poor women. Burned on the boat. Wth. Poor man stabbed to death. Why are the people that did this then going to be roaming free in the UK? Why are they allowed to enter the UK in the first place? Why are gangs not being 'smashed'?

Why won't the government tell us the truth about their crime rates?

Channel chaos as migrant dies, two women burned and one stabbed on same boat

Forty-five of those on board continued towards the UK and were picked up by a British rescue vessel.

"Do you prefer what we have?"

Well we voted as a country to "take back control". The Rwanda policy was an ill thought out farce and as yet no political party has a coherent policy on how this " control " works...

It would have been better than nothing

Walkden · 30/08/2026 17:11

700m for 0 effect is definitely not better than nothing.

I’ve only read the first page and it’s more of the usual…

I don’t think @CoventryCity is the problem or enemy here!

As for the bot comment…honestly?!

Then perhaps you should read on.

The article they posted is almost entirely fabricated.

The French did rescue people from a boat and confirmed that some did have sunburn.
They also confirmed that someone died of a heart attack.

They have not mentioned a weapon or stabbing of any kind, let alone confirmed it.

WE never actually got a proper Brexit due to "Maybe May" not knowing what she wanted. That's why David Davis resigned as Brexit Secretary because "she used to be decisive but then she wasn't so sure". Plus hubby had some banking interests in Brussels in banking I understand.

700m for 0 effect is definitely not better than nothing.

It wasn’t zero effect, voluntary movement is the cheapest way to do it and many moved to ROI.

But still, you voted for what the op linked yes?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 30/08/2026 17:15

You should be. I certainly am. Ireland has changed a lot too, the social media drive to ensure that people don’t speak out, if you do, you’re an underclass racist.
I have said it before, i have neighbours and friends who were once immigrants, they’re not afraid to say that it is out of control, the men don’t have good intentions.

If you told me a boat was arriving with women from Sudan, the Congo, Afghanistan, if be there with blankets, food and support.

I don’t care if that makes me two faced.I saw two horrendous news articles where the offending person got a measly prison sentences, both attacks on teenage girls, one attempted kidnapping and the other knock out by a stranger.

A parent will kill soon. I felt an unfamiliar rage watching both incidents.

The problem with fruit picking, cauli cutting, tattie lifting and sprout pulling is that it's seasonal and also can be labour intensive.
And yes, you live-in in caravans.(Unless you live in the area and can travel to the site.

Potatoes - June/Oct These are lifted by machine but then collected and inspected by hand
Caulis - same time frame
Sprouts - Aug/Oct then Nov/Jan
Sept/April - Leeks
I can't write about fruit-picking because I've never lived in an area that specialised in this.

The pea harvesting process is completely mechanical

The abolition of Zero Hours Contracts stopped a lot of UK people doing this work.

That may be the case but SH tenants cant live away from home Its supposed to be their only residence. My friend had a flat inspection including questions about it being his only home. If ppl want SH tenants to do these jobs the rules are going to have to change
But like i said SH tenants have just as much right to choose to sleep in their own bed as home owners do.

Are you on social media with algorithms? BlueSky?

Algorithms are a concern, you can't deny that. The recent Meta settlement deal involves an agreement about their operation in the case of younger users.

I use X sometimes. As you know I am a big old lefty so I don't follow any far right accounts but even I have the most atrocious far right stuff served up on my timeline. AI slop and real hideousness that you would balk at. Presumably I get this offered up to me because I sometimes visit the accounts of Reform and Tory MPs.

Mumsnet is not great either, but in a different way. There is a lot of spreading of right wing conspiracy theories. It is pot luck whether the mods zap them.

We left everything - the EU, the single market, every single EU institution, we are no longer bound by any EU law, and the deal was that of Johnson, Rees-Mogg and Frost!

Whatever "proper" brexit you and the Daily Express fantasises about does not exist, or certainly was not on the referendum ballot paper.

Fair enough.
In my day a lot of these jobs were done by students during holidays.
Now they don't seem to want to get their hands dirty.

Sometimes SM doesn’t meet the echo chamber you’d prefer, including mn. That is true.

It is not about wanting to be in an echo chamber, it is about not wanting really hideous racism and bigotry arriving on my timeline. I am not talking about "hurty words" or differences of opinion.

Not wanting to see conspiracy theories designed to spread fear and hatred on MN is not about wanting MN to be an echo chamber either.

The echo chamber script is wearing so thin it is transparent now tbh.

The entire reason for not supporting the algorithm is exactly because we don’t want an echo chamber.

Having a a one sided view is never a good idea.

It takes less than 30 minutes for a teenage boy to see something extremist/sexist towards women.
After that they will continue to see extreme sexist views until their entire feed is full of it and they start genuinely believing that women are the problem.

The same thing happens with immigrants.
People are so busy reading fake news on the internet that they don’t bother fact checking things and become afraid of things that likely will never happen and overlook the dangers in front of their faces.

GunnelVallquist · 30/08/2026 17:38

I think the next General Election (which I won’t be able to vote in, so no need to get excited) will be decided by immigration.

Not the cost of living, or the NHS, but immigration.

That’s just my personal opinion of course.

GunnelVallquist · 30/08/2026 17:39

For what it’s worth; I wouldn’t vote for Reform or Restore (although I can understand people who do).

I would vote Conservative.

But I’m not eligible, so there’s that.

You can do as you like, but algorithms just feed back what people want. If it’s a left voting Corbynite who only wants to see Palestine info they’ll get it.

Walkden · 30/08/2026 17:40

"You also voted for Labour. So you’ve got chaos on boats and crimes that are awful."

Correction - the country voted for labour. This was not surprising since the conservatives party was a shambles at the time.

Realistically, the conservatives won't be getting in next election either

Irrespective of who any one person voted for you have to live with the majority decision until the next election. Plenty of people are unhappy with the Brexit ; including people who voted for it. We are all still living with the after effects of it; including how to handle illegal immigration.
