I found out my wife and my best friend had a physical relationship before we got married, I don't know how to react

jhkyg · Today 09:15

I genuinely don't know what to write or how I'm supposed to react to this.

My wife and I are both in our mid 40s. My best friend is also the same age. He has been my best friend since childhood. He's the godfather to our children, and my wife and I are godparents to his children.

For a bit more context, my wife and he are also very close friends. They actually knew each other before I knew either of them, and they've always had a very good friendship

Our families are extremely close. We normally see each other every week for breakfast or a BBQ in one of our gardens. We go on family trips together, celebrate birthdays and holidays together, and our children are all teenagers and are basically like cousins.

My wife and I have a genuinely good marriage. We've been together for decades, we love each other, we're financially comfortable, and as far as I knew there was absolutely nothing wrong between us.

Then on Friday night, my best friend told me he needed to confess something that had happened a very long time ago.

He told me that when we were 18, during a six month breakup between me and my now wife, he and my wife had a sexual relationship for around 2–3 months.

I honestly felt physically sick when he told me.

I didn't know how to react. I cried. He just stood there and kept telling me that it ended years ago, that nothing had happened since, and that I shouldn't be angry with my wife because we weren't together at the time.

I got angry with him and told him I didn't want him to contact me again. Then I went home.

For context, yes, I broke up with my wife when we were 18. I was an idiot teenager and I broke her heart. That's on me. We were apart for about six months, then eventually got back together. We've been solid ever since.

In all those years, I've never had a reason to believe she was cheating on me. Not once.

Yesterday, I told my wife what he'd confessed. At first she said she had kept it from me because she didn't want to lose me. She apologised for hiding it.

She confirmed that they had been together for around three months while we were broken up. She said they eventually stopped because they realised remaining friends was better for them, and then around three months later, she and I got back together.

But then she also told me that technically it was none of my business who she slept with while we were broken up. It was her body and she was single. If this had been some random person she slept with during those six months, I probably wouldn't care now.

But it wasn't some random person. It was my best friend. The man who stood beside me as my best man at our wedding. I've trusted for most of my life. I've allowed into my home every week. That man who is godfather to my children.

And they've both known about this for 26 years while I had absolutely no idea. That's the part I can't get past. I keep thinking about every BBQ, every family holiday, every time the four of us have sat together talking, and wondering whether they were both looking at each other and remembering something I didn't know. My wife keeps saying that nothing happened during our relationship and that she has loved me all these years. And honestly, I believe her But something has changed in my head. I can't look at my friend the same way anymore. I can't even look at their friendship the same way.

Part of me wants to completely cut him and his family out of our lives. No more breakfasts, no more BBQs, no more holidays together. I don't want my children caught in the middle, but at the same time I don't know how I'm supposed to carry on having him around as if nothing happened.

And then there's my wife. I know technically she didn't cheat on me. We were broken up.
But she deliberately kept this from me for 26 years, and so did he. I'm struggling with the fact that two of the people I trusted most in the world knew something incredibly significant about my own life that I didn't know. I don't know whether I'm overreacting because it happened so long ago, or whether the fact that it was my best friend and was deliberately kept secret makes this completely different.

But right now I feel hurt, betrayed, embarrassed and honestly a bit stupid and Jealousy so much

How did you discover Mumsnet?

on and off user, not a regular one

I have an 8 year old as my youngest, and whenever my wife goes on work trips, I have to take care of all three kids. So I usually search for old posts here to get some advice or see how other parents have handled similar situations

I'm not going blow up his marriage..... I'm not that bad person, if she is not aware of her husband's past with my wife, then let it be

Again it's not my place to bring up

She'll wonder why you're not friends any more so will find out anyway... it will all come out ... even your kids will know youre not friends with them and will want to know why. You're not prepared to blow up his marriage but happy to potentially blow up your own?? Yes, remaining friends with him is probably untenable now he's been a bastard and done this after 26 years .... but with him out of the picture you've no need to feel any different towards your wife. As you stated you've a great marriage... very happy, which btw is remarkable and unusual as it started in your teens. Don't punish her for something that happened so long ago that it really really doesn't matter.

Think it’s a fear not a fact. I had wondered that myself,

Isthisit22 · Today 12:52

You are understandably shocked and upset but take some time over this. You have as 26 years of, presumably, happy marriage- this really isn’t worth throwing it all away for.

annoying that your friend couldn’t have just kept his mouth shut. Telling you this now has no purpose and only causes hurt.

Bananacrepewithnuts · Today 12:52

SunnyRedSnail · Today 12:35

I don't understand why it matters?

If they wanted to be together, he would be her husband and not you.

SHE WAS SINGLE. YOU DUMPED HER! It was over 20 years ago!

You are behaving like quite the idiot here and making yourself look silly.

Having read more of the OPs posts now I think we are wrong to be so dismissive - it was ages ago - get over it etc
Perhaps the wife and the friend have been seeing each other over the years?
Perhaps the friend is the father of one of his kids?
The only thing is if this is the case - why would the friend only confess to the historic stuff?

There might well more to it.

Proteinpudding · Today 12:53

Bit of a difference between being upset, and deciding to leave home, cut off your wife and best friend and decide that she's a cheating ho and has been the entire marriage and having children with other people.

Hereagain2 · Today 12:54

This post isnt written by a man, it’s not written by a middle aged woman either. The language is wrong….

Yea, no, not buying any of it.
It’s all nonsense

CRCGran · Today 12:55

MNLurker1345 · Today 12:44

@CRCGran “BUT HE WON'T ANSWER THE QUESTION... WHAT DOES THE FRIENDS WIFE THINK OF IT ALL.. WHAT'S HER TAKE ON IT... DID SHE ALREADY KNOW.... ITS BEEN ASKED SEVERAL TIMES BUT NO RESPONSE....”

Could possibly be inconsequential because BF may have not known his wife then and in that case it really wouldn’t matter to BFs wife.

Two different situations -

  1. OP, BF and OPs now wife, then ex girlfriend - now historic secret revealed
  2. BF meets his current wife 5,10 years later - nothing to tell.

Yes, but they're all good close friends and he's just lobbed a grenade into OPs marriage, potentially destroying his marriage and certainly the friendship... so she'd have an opinion on that, regardless of when she met him.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · Today 12:55

@Hereagain2

I agree.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · Today 12:57

It's a big shock and you're doubting everything in the last 26 years despite up to this point to having anything to suggest that some thing had been going on.

Logic dictates you'd have walked away ha your known thay may be the reason neither of them told you. There's a reason he's told you now, you've automatically assumed it's because there's something going on and your brain is infilling miss data. It may not even be that, it may be irs been eating away at him or he could actually be jealous of your family set up.

Whilst it hurts at the moment you'd be best getting some help to process it before you make any rash decisions.

Wishing you all the best

offtocalifornia · Today 12:57

They didn't do anything wrong.

One thing you've learned is that your best friend is an idiot for wanting to 'confess' now. What a fool. What on earth was he trying to achieve - hurting you, your wife?

watchingthishtread · Today 12:57

jhkyg · Today 12:12

Exactly this!!

If they can hide one lie, idk how many are there more

What was the lie?

isthisnormal1971 · Today 12:57

More intriguing why he felt the need to tell you. I have had sex with a couple of my husband friendship group, from when i dated in my 20’s . I mean I presume my husband knows as he knows I dated a few for 3-4 months but I don’t even remember the act never mind think about it. We all socialise with friends and wives etc and I am sure they would know too given we had history. It’s never crossed my mind until I read this post. So long ago 😂

I was thinking the same thing. The language and shorthand used is very similar to how my teenagers text me.

FairKoala · Today 12:58

You act like this and then wonder why no one tells you anything.

Why is everything about you

It doesn’t matter who your ex gf was seeing after you broke up with her. Anything she did in those 6 months has nothing to do with you.

You say you don’t want secrets but when people tell you things you lash out at them

pearlsclutchedhard · Today 13:01

But have you asked him why he’s only told you now?

It’s none of your business what your wife got up to after you left her.

The fact you are so close and he was your best man etc I get it, I would feel the same.

But a fling at 18 is it really worth punishing your wife over?

CinnamonBuns67 · Today 13:01

Yanbu. They should have told you when you got back together, there should have been honesty/transparency from them both. When big secrets come out years later it's often much harder to deal with than being told straight away so I understand your feelings and them minimising it won't be helping. I'd be fuming and I'd struggle to look at either of them the same way again.

walrushurricane · Today 13:01

Ohcrap082024 · Today 12:49

Both of them had a responsibility to tell him IMO. I think it was his business. They are both responsible for the situation.

His mate because he crossed a line in having a secret, sexual relationship with his best mate’s ex. Even though he knew his mate was still in love with her etc. Snakey behaviour.

His wife because she had a sexual relationship with his best mate and got back with him without being fully honest with him.

FWIW, I was friends with a guy. I started dating one of his mates. Went on for 6 months or so. Split up and a few weeks later started dating our mutual friend. Realised very quickly that it was serious so new bf told ex bf. Face to face before he found out. Ex was upset.. because he was losing his wingman. 30 odd years later, we are still together and DH is still mates with the ex. The situation may be different but honesty is and was the best policy.

Why should his wife have been "fully honest" about who she slept with at the age of 18 after he had dumped her for such a ridiculous reason. I doubt she would have felt secure enough to be honest. It might have been better to have told him for her own sake but I certainly don't think she owed him anything.

RVectensian · Today 13:01

Surely the fact that he was her friend before he was yours also makes a difference here?

Bananacrepewithnuts · Today 13:01

watchingthishtread · Today 12:57

What was the lie?

It was a lie by omission.

Best man. Godfather.

I can't help thinking maybe they did always plan to confess but it was never the right time and the years went by until it was all too long ago.

God knows why the friend decided to spill the beans now though.

PinkBottle75 · Today 13:02

Traitorsclaudia · Today 09:26

I'd wonder why you're being told now.

This

Washingupdone · Today 13:02

If wife’s friend didn’t know about the 3 month sexual relationship three decades ago she will now, as she will want to know why their friendship has finished. Being a woman she’ll find out by hook or by crook.

in addition OP’s family and children will find out one way or another in years to come if OP wants to break up his, until now, blissful marriage.

Have you had a DNA test to prove one of you DC isn’t yours or has your wife told you?

Blessedbethefruitloopss · Today 13:02

You don’t need to anything at the moment. You’ve had a shock, and you need the time to process it. Whatever the end of that process looks like.
