DH wants to be a teenager, no time for me… aibu?

Turtleneckhead · Yesterday 19:01

DH is off work for the 6 week holiday. I’ve had 2 weeks off where we went on holiday for a week and another pottering around. we are ttc and he has 2 kids from a previous relationship that live with us week on/week off.

DH has hobbies in the evenings on Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays. Obviously on those days on the weeks his kids are here I have to stay in and make sure there’s an adult in the house.

Dhs other hobby is video games. On Saturday and Sunday he played on it all day, and I mean all day. This week his kids are on holiday with their mum so he’s had no responsibilities. Monday was our anniversary, he video gamed all day whilst I was at work, gave me my gift and card, and then went to do his hobby until 9:30pm.

Today when I arrived home from work, he said “let’s spend tonight in my office” (his office being where his computer games are). I feel so sad that he doesn’t want to spend time with me.

And then on our anniversary night he said “turtleneckhead, I want one day where I am a total teenager. I want to game all day until the early hours of the morning. No responsibilities, no having to come down for dinner. I’ll pay for you to go to a spa that day”

Aibu to think this is very incompatible behaviour with marriage? Or am I controlling?

He's done a number on you alright, @Turtleneckhead. What a calculating, manipulative piece of work he is.
And the mimicking of your stutter - horribly cruel.

He's shown he doesn't even like you.

Time to go. The best of luck.

You’re a fool. Why are you looking after his kids so he can hobby?????? Get a life. Definitely don’t have kids with him.

MNLurker1345 · Yesterday 22:12

@Turtleneckhead, I am incensed regarding what you are going through.

Someone sits you down and composes these shit analogies - “playing games is like watching a film together”. Who does he think he is? What the hell is he even talking about?

So you say “I don’t like playing games”, and his response is something like “oh, I am so sensitive and you have hurt my feelings. I who love you so much. Well darling, you are the cause of our problems.”

And you don’t know what is right and what is wrong. What he is doing to you is mind control. I worry that he will break you.

Franjipanl8r · Yesterday 22:13

I think you’ve worked out why his first relationship wasn’t a success. He’s a total man child.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · Yesterday 22:13

How old are you? 30 /32?

Honestly get out now....

What kind of ghost life are you living? This isnt a marriage....

PrettyPickle · Yesterday 22:14

@Turtleneckhead OP, this isn’t about video games anymore. This is about how he treats you. You’re not unreasonable. You’re not imagining things. You’re not “treating his children like a burden”. You’re living with a man who shuts you down, twists your words, and makes you doubt your own reality. Let’s go through what you’ve posted.

You’re doing the parenting. He’s doing the hobbies. His kids may be asleep when he goes out, but you are still the adult responsible for them. You’re stuck in the house four nights a week because he chooses hobbies over family life.
That’s not “you knew what you were getting into”. That’s him opting out and leaving you to cover the basics. And when you raise it, he accuses you of treating his children like a burden. That’s not fair. That’s not kind. That’s not what a partner says. It’s a tactic to shut you up.

He weaponises the children to avoid accountability. When you say you want couple time, he turns it into “You don’t see my children as family.” That’s not a misunderstanding. That’s emotional manipulation. He’s using his children as a shield to avoid talking about the real issue: he doesn’t make time for you.

He’s rewriting reality to make you doubt yourself. You say you don’t enjoy gaming. He says “Playing games together is like watching a film.” It isn’t. He knows it isn’t. He’s trying to convince you that his hobby = quality time. Then he flips it into “You don’t think we’re connected. That hurts me.” That’s classic guilt‑tripping. He’s making your unmet needs into his emotional injury.
This is why you feel confused. This is why you feel unreasonable. This is why you’re doubting yourself. Because he’s actively distorting the conversation.

He mocked your stutter. This is the biggest red flag of all. Mocking a partner’s stutter isn’t “immature”. It isn’t “stress”. It isn’t “a slip”. It’s cruel. It’s disrespectful. It’s demeaning. It’s the kind of behaviour that tells you exactly how little he values your feelings. A man who loves you does not imitate your stutter during an argument. Full stop.

He’s 32 not 17. He’s old enough to parent his children, maintain a relationship, share responsibilities, communicate like an adult and treat you with respect. Instead, he’s choosing escapism, hobbies, gaming, avoidance. guilt‑tripping, twisting your words and mocking you. This isn’t immaturity. This is a pattern.

TTC with him would leave you doing everything. You already stay home with his kids, carry the emotional load, initiate all couple time, get blamed when you ask for connection, get guilt‑tripped when you express needs, get mocked when you’re upset, Add a baby to that? You’d be parenting alone while he games and goes out four nights a week.

He’s not ready for another child. He’s not ready for the relationship he’s already in. You are nothing more than his kids Nanny and housekeeper, you deserve more.

OP, you’re not unreasonable. You’re unheard. You’re not controlling. You’re not selfish. You’re not “treating his kids differently”. You’re a woman asking for a couple of hours of connection, shared responsibility, basic respect, not being mocked, not being guilt‑tripped and not being emotionally manipulated. These are normal needs. Healthy needs. Reasonable needs. He’s making you feel like they’re outrageous because it suits him.

You’re not wrong. You’re waking up. And that’s why you feel confused, because you’re starting to see the gap between what he tells you and what’s actually happening. You’re not an idiot. You’re not overreacting. You’re not imagining things. You’re finally seeing the truth.

I don't think this is what you signed up for and you have clearly given it your all but sadly it takes two to tango and he is not dancing, You know this is not right and if you need your feelings validated, I suspect you will get oodles on here.

I find it very hard because posts on here and other forums say “you know what you were getting into when he had kids”, so when I first expressed that it wasn’t fair that I had to stay in when he went out, he basically told me that I was treating his children like a burden. That really hurt me, and I think it made me think that I was being selfish, and not cut out to he a stepmother. His mum also reinforced this and said I’d stay in with my biological children (if I had them), so I was already treating them differently.

DH also takes great offence when I tell him we hardly spend any time together. He asks me for example - if I say well you’re out doing your hobbies and then DSCs are here so we (understandably) don’t get much couple time… that becomes a “you don’t see my children as family. We spend time with the kids, that’s our time”.

He said to me that he is more than just a dad and a husband. I pointed out that he had days to do what he wanted, all I was asking for is a couple of hours in the evening. He said well you assumed I’d be playing a one player game but obviously I meant a two player game.

Hes also just imitiated my stutter during an argument about this, so I’m sitting in the bedroom.

This man and his mother are bullies.

Leave them all

3luckystars · Yesterday 22:15

You are a free childminder.

Whereland · Yesterday 22:16

He imitated your stutter? That’s absolutely vile.

OneFineDay22 · Yesterday 22:19

I think it sounds like you just don’t want to admit/face the fact that yes it is a problem that you don’t feel connected even though he (says he) does, and that what that means is that your relationship isn’t really a relationship/isn’t going anywhere. Much better to rip off the plaster now and move on than to actually end up pregnant by this man.

EarthSight · Yesterday 22:20

Obviously on those days on the weeks his kids are here I have to stay in and make sure there’s an adult in the house

You're doing all of that for HIS kids???

No you don't have to stay in. Madness! Run for the hills!! Do not have children with this man, unless you just want a sperm doner!!

I'm sorry OP, but he sees you mainly a sex provider and free babysitter. He has no real interest in spending time with you, and he makes that incredibly clear.

Watch how fast your so called 'marriage' unravels when you refuse point blank to be in on any of his hobby nights from now on, and you actually make him parent his own children.

You will not get consensus from him on your feelings or needs, so don't wait for it. You have to be confident in yourself. Manipulative users aren't just going to throw their hands in the air and go 'You're right! You got me! I've been using you this whole time'!! They will twist and turn and doge to avoid losing what they want, which for him, is an awful lot! He will lean and manipulate your kindness, press on your guilt buttons to make you back down. DON'T LISTEN!!

@Turtleneckhead, you listen to all of his shit! Please listen to this. It cancels out anything that he has said or will ever say.

Take the advice of this stranger as the first step to getting away from this man.

Yes and remind yourself of this through the process of ripping off the plaster.

BettyBoh · Yesterday 22:20

He is emotionally immature. Unlikely he will grow up. Get out whilst you’re not pregnant. You shouldn’t be staying in whilst he has a hobby.

YourWildAmberSloth · Yesterday 22:20

I get so confused. I know you’re all right. But then when he speaks I feel like the unreasonable one. He said that playing games together is like watching a film together. And I said I don’t really like playing games and it’s not the same and then he said basically that ok you don’t think we’re connected that really hurts me, is all this a lie? I think we’re connected and you obviously don’t, it feels horrible.

and then I’m like am I being unreasonable, am I a total idiot for getting upset over a game? And then I read here and I’m like actually I’m not wrong.

I don’t even know what I think anymore

Because he's gasliglighting the hell out of you.

Agapornis · Yesterday 22:22

I'm so sorry he's ableist re your stutter. That alone is a perfectly good reason to end the relationship. He has no respect for you.

No you fucking well would not be staying home4 nights a week if they were your kids, you’d be negotiating with your dh a reasonable time!! Why isn’t he home with them? Why is he so footloose and fancy free? If they were my kids and my dh thought that he’d be a single dad. What a selfish fucked, even your ANNIVERSARY was all about him.
please book something all 4 nights of the next week that his kids are here NOW. If he argues you say stop treating your kids like a burden, you barely see them and you’re their dad, they deserve time with you. From now on they are getting it and I’m getting hobbies and time to myself, if their dad thinks he doesn’t have to be here then I certainly don’t.
while you’re making plans to leave. What’s stopping you from leaving? The sooner the better. Please tell me you don’t both own the house or something like that. If you could just pack up your stuff and go stay with family now that would be best. He doesn’t deserve any more seconds of a live in nanny servant.

DH and I both game but we are not like your man child and we still spend lots of time together doing various things.

DH is off work for the 6 week holiday. I’ve had 2 weeks off where we went on holiday for a week and another pottering around. we are ttc and he has 2 kids from a previous relationship that live with us week on/week off.

Aibu to think this is very incompatible behaviour with marriage? Or am I controlling?

Here's a promise.

You're going to regret every single day of your life you throw away on this gaslighting, manipulative, useless waste of space. He's a walking fucking ick.

How on earth did you let yourself get saddled with him? Did he have a personality change?

Get out, run, don't walk.

Please, please please do not get pregnant to this wannabe teenager self obsessed pig of an oxygen thief..Your life will be one long relentless single parent drudge.

Do yourself the biggest favour possible. Leave him and do not look back.

Bafflingpineapplecow · Yesterday 22:29

I echo everyone who has said gain some distance. Go stay with family for a while. Continuous manipulation makes your brain foggy. Block him for a while so he can't manipulate you further. Only for a few days at first so you can gain some perspective and distance and let it sink in that he is, in fact, not a good man. Yes, you need to leave but its all well and good us saying you do, you need to feel it for yourself and the first step is accepting and internalising that he really doesn't like you, nor respects you, and that having a child with him will negatively impact your life for a very very long time. Then, once your brain is fresher, you can work out any practical details. He is using you. Don't let him

JenRummy · Yesterday 22:32

OP the situation you’re in is crazy making. You raise valid concerns then get gaslit and have it twisted. You feel lonely and rubbish. Stop TTC! He’s shown you your future as you can’t change someone else through begging or nagging. You either accept it or realise you deserve better.
