AIBU to refuse apologising after being blocked in at Tesco?

ThisIsAbsolutelyCrazy · Yesterday 00:07

So, yesterday I go to Tesco with DH. DH is a wheelchair user and has a Blue Badge.

There were no disabled bays or parent and child bays so I went to a far corner of the car park where there were two empty rows of normal bays and parked between 2 bays so had room for DH to get in and out.

Lo and behold we came back to a car parked so close to my driver's side that I couldn't get between the cars - less than 10 inches in between. The car had parked over into the bay I had half parked in.

We were obviously WTF. The other bays around us were still empty.

Coming round to the front of the cars, we saw there was a young lad no more that 15-17 sitting in the passenger seat of the other car. He obviously couldn't get out of his door either because it was up against mine! I said 'what kind of idiot would park like this' or some such. He said 'my dad'. Then asked him why he'd blocked him in.as well. He didn't answer and just kept his head down. I will admit I did swear a bit saying for fucks sake, this is fucking disgusting. Then said 'tell your Dad he's a complete cunt'. At no point did I make threats to the lad or swear at him. I knew he didn't park the car.

Anyway I then climbed in through the passenger side, moved the car into the row in front, got DH in and we left.

The Dad had not come back. I'm kicking myself because I didn't take a picture of the way he'd parked.

Anyway, tonight at around 8pm there's a knock at the door and two policemen are there. My heart dropped because I thought it was about one of the DC (both were out with friends), but they said they'd had a complaint about me causing 'fear and alarm' to a minor!

Turns out the Dad must have already had my reg number and told the police what I'd said. No mention of how he'd blocked me deliberately and left his son trapped in the car!

He must have known whoever came back to the car would be angry!

Anyway police said I could make a formal apology to the boy and the matter would not be taken further - this was because I admitted swearing.

I said No I will not as I had figured out by then that the Dad had done this all deliberately. No clue who he is.

AIBU to think he must be an absolute psycho?

Especially to leave his son trapped in the car!

Of course you should apologise for kicking off at a child.

Why didn't you park in the space if there was noone either side? If someone parked there, you could have pulled out to let DH in, as you did anyway.

AtlasPine · Yesterday 06:51

I would apologise in a carefully worded way which made it clear I was still very angry with the father for his behaviour but regretted using aggressive language and behaviour towards the son.

I think the father is despicable not just for his actions when the car had a disabled badge but also for leaving his son to face the music. Should the driver of the disabled car have been even more out of control with fury, his son may have been hurt.

Wow. All this handwringing over a teenager hearing some swear words (which he probably hears every day from his friends and on the internet and possibly from his unbalanced father too).

If you haven't lived life as a carer for a disabled person, especially one who is wheelchair bound, you really need to stop judging the OP. Just the fact that the OP had to park in the far corner of a lot and get her dh out of the vehicle and into a wheelchair which then had to be wheeled across the parking lot, just to do their shopping is a shameful comment on a first world society's interest in helping the less fortunate. And then to have that compounded by some guy who is role modeling the worst behavior for his teenage son is beyond the pale. Maybe OP's expression of anger and frustration and expression will teach the teenager that his father behaved badly.

P.S. There are some recent studies that say that people who swear when expressing frustration live longer...frankly the OP has enough on her plate without having to keep her emotions curtailed to save the poor teenager's sensibilities.

Do NOT apologize and do NOT accept a caution.

Jesus fucking Christ so you now get a police visit for swearing at someone who behaves like a cunt. Absolutely ridiculous.

Except she didn’t swear at that person, she swore at an unaccompanied minor.

I wasn't swearing at him. I was just swearing!

Who would deliberately trap their kid in a car to deliberately block a stranger's door and not expect that the stranger might be annoyed about it?

It’s really aggressive. Horrible behaviour to a kid trapped in a car.

The other person was clearly making a point about your parking without seeing the blue badge.
Literally all you had to do was to show the kid the badge and do the “Daily Mail sad face” that someone blocked you in and say there was no disabled spaces.
Kid would have told his dad and maybe dad would think to look next time.

You should apologise.

Do “minors”, or indeed parents, get the police at their door when they swear at their teachers? Which they do frequently, by all accounts.

Or should teachers just suck it up and accept it, along with the abuse they receive from pupils and parents every day?

Double standards.

ThisIsAbsolutelyCrazy@

Well if the OP thinks its fine to swear like this at a minor as the cowards way out.
Then obviously she setting the same behaviour example to her children who are going to learn fromsh their mom aswell.

Don't you think it's the children like OP's who think it's acceptable to swear at the teachers.
Just like OP thought it was acceptable to swear at a minor.
But she thinks cunt is not a swear so that's alright then.

Minors that are swearing at teachers in classrooms, grow up to be adults swearing in public.

They may not get the police at their door while they are still at school but will get the police at their door as adults and they have continued with the same filthy vile behaviour.

They probably just thought you'd parked terribly/abandoned your car. They weren't to know the back story??

Someone had parked terribly at a local beauty spot and I have to admit I did park deliberately so close they wouldn't be able to get in their car.

Nothing will come of it OP.
The police have far bigger crimes to deal with! Forget about it and move on.

Edited

Out of curiosity why would you put your car at risk of damage in order to make a point?

rumplestiltskin88 · Yesterday 07:01

That is scary and threatening behaviour and unacceptable. The boy did the right thing telling the police . Furthermore they may have not seen the blue badge and thought you parked terribly for no reason.

Obviously it's happening but it doesn't make it ok though.
If adults are doing it so that is why their children are learning from them.

KiwiFall · Yesterday 07:02

Simply you shouldn’t have sworn at and used aggressive language to the teen (who hadn’t done anything wrong). You say he was left to take the wrath but you don’t know why the teen wasn’t in the supermarket with his dad.

If you were that mad you should have waited for dad to get back to the car and spoken to him and not said anything to the teen.

I’m fully with you here OP, Did the police say there would be any consequences for not apologising?

AnneElliott · Yesterday 07:02

I don’t think you should apologise. I’d be minded to say that I would do so to the teen after his dad has apologised to you for making the life of a wheelchair user a lot harder.

The teen has definitely heard worse from his own peer group!

This,

Why not park properly if there was a space each side?
I had a child with its leg in plaster. A woman parked next to the passenger side even though there were lots of spaces elsewhere. She immediately apologised when she realised. I smiled and said it was fine which made her apologise more. No stress or drama and she might think twice next time.

CaptBirdsEar · Yesterday 07:04

You were wrong to use that language in front of a minor. Dad may have parked Sri fly but two wrongs don’t make a right. Apologise, be the adult.

MandemChickenShop · Yesterday 07:04

compounding small mistakes and bad decisions can result is serious consequences.

parking across 2 bays leads to getting blocked in leads to swearing at a child leads to police visit leads to not apologising because of the principle leads to.....?

Vicky Price springs to mind

The point you are missing is you were aggressive and rude. The teenager wasn't driving. I can see why you were frustrated but if someone was like that to my teenage sons, I'd have phoned the police too.

Dollymylove · Yesterday 07:05

FirstOfTheGang · Yesterday 00:11

Do you make a habit of swearing at teenagers who haven’t done anything wrong?

This bloke clearly did this on purpose. OP told the teenage son his dad was a cunt. That is completely true. Have the police got nothing better to do with their time? You know, like burglary, assault, rape, murder?

MargaretMeldrew · Yesterday 07:09

I think your behaviour towards the teenager was absolutely disgraceful. I completely understand your frustration and I probably would have muttered a few choice words to myself, but you directly addressed a teenager who was, effectively, an innocent bystander. My youngest is quite an anxious boy and would have felt very threatened by your behaviour. My eldest, the big softy, probably would have apologised even though it wasn’t his fault. Maybe that would have calmed you down. A grown adult. In saying all that, I can’t believe the police wasted their time on this.

Tollington · Yesterday 07:09

You parked like an idiot and are playing the victim after another driver parked in the bay correctly

MrsVBS · Yesterday 07:09

If you’d spoken to my son like that you would be making a formal apology too.
