AIBU to refuse apologising after being blocked in at Tesco?

So, yesterday I go to Tesco with DH. DH is a wheelchair user and has a Blue Badge.

There were no disabled bays or parent and child bays so I went to a far corner of the car park where there were two empty rows of normal bays and parked between 2 bays so had room for DH to get in and out.

Lo and behold we came back to a car parked so close to my driver's side that I couldn't get between the cars - less than 10 inches in between. The car had parked over into the bay I had half parked in.

We were obviously WTF. The other bays around us were still empty.

Coming round to the front of the cars, we saw there was a young lad no more that 15-17 sitting in the passenger seat of the other car. He obviously couldn't get out of his door either because it was up against mine! I said 'what kind of idiot would park like this' or some such. He said 'my dad'. Then asked him why he'd blocked him in.as well. He didn't answer and just kept his head down. I will admit I did swear a bit saying for fucks sake, this is fucking disgusting. Then said 'tell your Dad he's a complete cunt'. At no point did I make threats to the lad or swear at him. I knew he didn't park the car.

Anyway I then climbed in through the passenger side, moved the car into the row in front, got DH in and we left.

The Dad had not come back. I'm kicking myself because I didn't take a picture of the way he'd parked.

Anyway, tonight at around 8pm there's a knock at the door and two policemen are there. My heart dropped because I thought it was about one of the DC (both were out with friends), but they said they'd had a complaint about me causing 'fear and alarm' to a minor!

Turns out the Dad must have already had my reg number and told the police what I'd said. No mention of how he'd blocked me deliberately and left his son trapped in the car!

He must have known whoever came back to the car would be angry!

Anyway police said I could make a formal apology to the boy and the matter would not be taken further - this was because I admitted swearing.

I said No I will not as I had figured out by then that the Dad had done this all deliberately. No clue who he is.

AIBU to think he must be an absolute psycho?

Especially to leave his son trapped in the car!

Do you make a habit of swearing at teenagers who haven’t done anything wrong?

Spiffingdarling88 · Yesterday 00:12

You were unreasonable.

JustGiveMeReason · Yesterday 00:12

YABU

Clearly annoying, but your behaviour was really poor.

You had no reason to have a go at a person who was clearly not the driver, and you made it a LOT worse by using such appalling language.

lunar1 · Yesterday 00:14

I think being threatening towards a child, as you were is appalling behaviour irrespective of everything else.

I completely understand your frustrations, my first husband was a wheelchair user, but there is no excuse for the way you spoke to that teenager.

FirstOfTheGang · Yesterday 00:14

or, rather more likely than your pre-planned set up theory, the young lad noted your number because you swore at him.

Ansells · Yesterday 00:14

You swore at a teenager and presumably raised your voice too. It’s not his fault his dad is shit at parking.

And you’re assuming it’s some vendetta from the dad - it’s very likely the boy took a photo of your registration himself. Him keeping his head down doesn’t meant he’s not smart.

I wasn't swearing at him. I was just swearing!

Who would deliberately trap their kid in a car to deliberately block a stranger's door and not expect that the stranger might be annoyed about it?

OP posts:
stealthninjamum · Yesterday 00:15

I’m sorry op but as I’d say to my kids two wrongs don’t make a right. You shouldn’t have sworn at a teen who’d done nothing wrong.

ToKittyornottoKitty · Yesterday 00:15

His son wasn’t trapped in the car, he could have gotten out of a different door.

Yes you were being unreasonable to the teen, obviously! Say sorry for being horrible to a strangers kid and move on with your life

MyArtfulGreySloth · Yesterday 00:15

Jesus Christ, don’t they have anything better to do?

Really? You agree this this was all pre planned?

It’s not occurred to you that the boy took the registration himself after he dealt with OP’s wrath?

Nope.

The parking was absolutely deliberate to make a point about me taking up 2 bays.

Kid wasn’t trapped, and yes you did swear at him, you told him to tell his dad he was a cunt, which is vile to say to anyone, nethermind a kid

DallazMajor · Yesterday 00:16

I can understand why you were pissed off but telling a child to tell his parent he’s a cunt wasn’t fair. Just apologise and leave it at that. It’s not worth the hassle.

GinWizard · Yesterday 00:16

YABU. Understand the frustration of not being able to find a parking space but the dad likely didn't clock your blue badge and thought you'd parked like a dick, so responded by also parking like a dick to make a point. Very petty but swearing at his innocent teenage son was completely out of line, you knew he hadn't done it but probably made him feel quite scared.

Raindropskeepfallingon · Yesterday 00:17

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

You used appalling language in front of a minor who was trapped in a car - despite knowing he didn’t park it and it wasn’t his fault. Poor kid was probably intimidated by the irate person swearing repeatedly. Leaving aside the awful parking I’d probably have called police if you’d acted like that to my kid.

Yes I do. People love to teach others A Lesson. The car park was half empty so yes, it was deliberate. What a waste of police time

What point did he need to make?

There were at least 20 empty parking spaces all along the rows in were in!

Perhaps he was never going to get out of the car in the first place… and therefore we was never trapped!

There are many drivers who do that weird thing of parking right next to another car when there are rows of empty spaces, but it really doesn’t mean it was some pre planned act to catch you out. If you never swore and had a go at the boy, it wouldn’t have escalated so the driver would have to know you pretty well to know that’s how you react to difficult situations in order to catch you out.

What lesson would OP need to be taught for parking in an empty row of cars?! Truly extraordinary!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · Yesterday 00:20

Refuse to apologise and don’t accept a caution. The likelihood of this being persued through the courts is zero.

The guy left his kid there to take the wrath of whoever he blocked in.

He knew they would be angry. I was pretty tame IMO.

As i say, he must be an absolute psycho!

She took up 2 spaces so DH could get out. Papa thought he would show her didn't he?
It's my opinion. You do you

Don’t you think the boy deserves an apology?
