Threw water at my DP, was I justified

I feel bad for doing this, it’s really out of character for me but I did it instinctively and out of shock. I was stood up pouring some water from the sink on my lunch break, DP backed up against me so his bum was touching mine and he broke wind. I turned around and swilled him with water. I know it was wrong but the disrespect and shock made me angry in that moment.

He is now saying I was out of order and isn’t accepting my apology.

The shock of a fart made you instinctively throw water at him?

Ridiculous! 😂

I’d have punched him, not ridiculous in the SLIGHTEST. Dirty pig

Interesting

people can throw water at a partner who does something they don’t like and that’s fine…

This is crazy.

Interesting

Your focus is on the reaction to the bad act and not the bad act itself….

ReadingSoManyThreads · 24/08/2026 21:21

He's revolting. And now he's acting the victim after doing that to you? Fuck me, he's repulsive.

You did NOTHING wrong. You reacted instinctively - you threw water, not an object that would cause any harm. He's overreacting, playing the victim and turning his disgusting actions around to make you be the one at fault. I'd take a good long hard think on whether this is the man you want to spend your life with.

Beestings1 · 24/08/2026 21:24

ClassyLass · 24/08/2026 20:37

It was a reaction. It was dramatic (but understandable) and now he's being a baby. Why don't you get a takeaway and cuddle after laughing about how silly you both are and how short life is to be hung up on this kind of thing.

I have tried my best to reason, but reading these replies has given me a reality check.

He sounds like an immature manchild!

Thepossibility · 24/08/2026 21:33

What he did was worse. He was being disrespectful, you reacted in the moment. It's not like you ran to the sink to drench him, he backed his dirty arse into you while you were already standing there.

Dogshitter · 24/08/2026 21:34

If my OH did that I’d have probably laughed…but we’re a pair of very childish idiots. I’d definitely have dealt him an equally rotten revenge at some point!

I wouldn't waste your energy reasoning with him, honestly - he's repugnant.

Just get on with your evening and your day tomorrow and don't give him a second thought. Don't go pandering to him, that's what he wants, he enjoys being the victim - don't give him that power.

ExtraOnions · 24/08/2026 21:34

He farted on you ? That’s disgusting and disrespectful - way more disrespectful than throwing water on him.

My husband wouid never do that, and if he did the verbal volley he would get would be far worse than a splash of water

This man does not respect you.

I know!
And he who farted is offended by a bit of water throwing! Not punches or kicks. Water!
It's like an episode of EastEnders.

Nofeckingway · 24/08/2026 21:40

Where the fuck do these men come from ? Raised by wolves 😄

Copperoliverbear · 24/08/2026 21:42

Revolting 🤢

Anyahyacinth · 24/08/2026 21:48

He tried to be demeaning and it didn’t go his way and now HE is sulking?

Bizarre…is he someone who is never corrected OP? Insecure about his status? His reaction isn't healthy at ALL

This ^
The farting was disgusting, disrespectful and childish.
The refusal to engage now is childish.
Let the child sulk.

believerr · 24/08/2026 21:53

YANBU. His behaviour was revolting. Who the hell does that to their partner?! So rude and unfunny.

cariadlet · 24/08/2026 22:00

He deliberately chose to do something disgusting. He didn't just break wind in the same room as you; he chose to go right up against you, when you were in a position where you were blocked in, and then farted on you. That's gross.

You didn't make a deliberate choice. You acted by instinct and did something which didn't hurt him (and which he thoroughly deserved).

I haven't voted because the criteria weren't clarified.
YNBU for throwing water on him.
YBU for apologising.

He's the one who should have apologised to you for being such a pig.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 24/08/2026 22:04

No-one on mumsnet farts OP so you'll get lots of support 😂

Sereine · 24/08/2026 22:08

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 24/08/2026 20:33

It's far worse to back your arse against someone and deliberately fart than to chuck water as a retaliation.
I think you need to evaluate your life choices though.

How do you know it was deliberate?

onetrickrockingpony · 24/08/2026 22:09

He's disgusting. No one should have to live with someone deliberately farting on them and thinking it's funny. I'd have thrown the water on him, and shoved him away, and refuse to speak with him until he's apologised. So disgusting.

onetrickrockingpony · 24/08/2026 22:10

Sereine · 24/08/2026 22:08

The fact that he "backed up and then broke wind" speaks to a deliberate action. Do you often walk backwards into someone until you're touching them with your rear end?

EppingIsFun · 24/08/2026 22:12

Were you planning to ever have sex with him again? What he did would give me the Ick.

buttercup786 · 24/08/2026 22:26

What he did was way worse. I would be absolutely furious if my husband did that, you are justified in throwing the water x

Pippa12 · 24/08/2026 22:27

He has no respect for you behaving like this. I’d be long gone! Revolting behaviour.
