Overhead neighbours talking about me?

crazykatzz · Yesterday 17:10

I have always got on with my neighbour who lives a few a doors down.

I have babysat one of her kids and also looked after her cat when she goes on holiday.

She does have a mean girl vibe about her though and she does have a habit of talking about others.

I asked her to do look after my cats and do my bins whilst I was away with DC and she happily agreed.

Whilst I was loading the car I overheard and another neighbour complaining about me calling on my cats every night.

Convo was like

Neighbour 1 "Did you hear her yelling for her cats again?"

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "I heard it but went back to bed".

Neigbour 2 "I can't believe how her neighbours haven't said anything, it's every effing night, literally by their next door neighbours windows every night, literally, I am absolutely sick of it, wakes me up every effing night".

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "Yeah I know as it's as the back it is really loud."

I popped my head up from the passenger seat and they stopped talking.

For reference Neigbour 2 would regularly
play her music at for hours on end so it was ironic hearing her complain about me. I also helped her with her gardening.

I feel this is very 2 faced and want to step back and wondering why they didn't approach me directly instead of talking about me.?

AIBU to not talk to them when I get back of holiday?

I do suffer from anxiety so not sure if I am over reacting here.

I text the neighbour looking after my cats to ensure all was well with the cats and the house.

I apologised for the noise and that I wasn't aware it was annoying people as nobody had mentioned anything?

We are both members of our neighbourhood What's App and Facebook groups and nothing has ever been mentioned.

If I had know I would of stopped as I like to get on with people and I am so embarrassed.

You say multiple times and 'late evening'.
If you're waking people up, that's not evening. That's night. And anti social.
I have a neighbour who lets their dog into the front garden at about midnight. All the bloody thing does is bark, and then they spend 10 minutes trying to coax it back in the house. It is infuriating.
And don't forget sound travels much further at night without all the background noise of the daytime.
I've owned cats for 26 years and the only time I've called any of them in is when one of the little buggers has disappeared when they're due at the vet.

Look. You're clearly a good person.
You've found out something's a problem. You'll be doing your best to be considerate going forward and you have directly responded to your neighbour, who probably feels ashamed of how things played out.

Make the change and move on from it as best you can. Terrible neighbours are the ones who get criticised and don't change.

Oh, and the reason the neighbours haven't said anything to you in the past is because they value you as a neighbour, and don't want to upset you/rock the boat.

I have an elderly neighbour who listens to radio 2 in his garage most days and hums along thinking he can't be heard but the walls are thin and we can hear every goddamn note. But... we really like our neighbours and frankly, we'd miss the terrible music and humming if they weren't around any more, so we've learned to be only 3/100 irritated by it, rather than the 70/100 bothered we'd be if they were horrible people. Neighbours can get away with a lot more if people like and respect them.

LadyChilli · Yesterday 21:18

You've done the right thing to address it and apologise. No need to stress, now that you know it is a problem you will stop.

This ^
You've apologised and you care that you've upset them. Make the changes when you get back. It'll be fine.
Enjoy your holiday!

Used to have a neighbour that did that when I lived in a flat and she was downstairs, she would walk all around the outside of the entire block calling and whistling this horrendous high pitch whistle for an easy 20-30 minutes every fucking evening. Never at the same time, just whenever she was ready to go to bed I guess. Could be 8pm could be midnight.

I felt rage just reading your post as it sent me right back. I was younger then and too shy to say anything but I got so frustrated some nights I would literally cry as she'd wake my son up alot doing it.

Sometimes late evening and multiple times as I have several cats.

I think it was mentioned as I was in between calling the cats in and loading the car.

Well, yes, this is annoying and I'm not surprised your neighbours are moaning about you! Surely you must realise that shouting multiple times late at night is going to annoy your neighbours?

BruFord · Yesterday 21:45

You've apologized and will change your behavior going forward, that's all you need to do.

Having a minor moan about a neighbor doesn't mean that they don't like you @crazykatzz, they just find this particular behavior irritating. One of my immediate neighbors is rather nosey and anything you mention to him will be repeated to others - I've moaned about him gossiping a couple of times, but I do like him!

Copperoliverbear · Yesterday 21:46

You should have said sorry didn’t realise I was so loud, while we are on the subject of loud, if you keep your music down I will keep my voice down.

I can see why that would be infuriating for the neighbours, to be honest. I don't understand why it never crossed your mind that it might be annoying? You need to sort out alternatives before they report you formally

Pistachiocake · Yesterday 22:19

If she's happy to use you for babysitting, she shouldn't be badmouthing behind your back. Fine if she'd said I appreciate your help, but do you mind being quieter around the cats.

OnTheBoardwalk · Yesterday 22:24

We all moan about neighbours I do

have you said what time you call them in at?

I get my sisters in at 7 in summer with a shake of some dreamies and a quick shout. One is usually in the garden the other one usually sleeping somewhere cool.

JapanesePotWeed · Yesterday 22:29

Whenever I hear new pet names being called over and over again at the neighbours, I write them down (I've had Win, Spicy, Fudge) and then report to the police.
Crack heads looking for their dealer sound virtually indistinguishable from cat heads looking for their Winny and Patch.

Thats fantastic OP.
You no longer need to be embarrassed.
We all make mistakes and recognising them and saying sorry and not blaming others is a very mature thing to do.
Stop worrying about it now and put it out of your mind.
It takes guts to say a sincere sorry … and it can be hard work to get along with people in your neighbourhood so you should be pleased with yourself.

crazykatzz · Yesterday 22:43

@LAMPS1 Aww thank you so much, your reply has made me feel a lot better.

I never meant any malice or harm by calling the cats, it's just that I worry about them being out all night.
They are my furbabies.

The other neighbour dosent really like me despite me saying hello, trying to talk to her etc, taking in her parcels and helping her with her gardening.

It began way before I got the cats so hearing them talk just made me feel I was being ganged up on.

Well it is annoying for your neighbours. You’d be a bit pathetic to ignore them, especially the one looking after your cats.

mumsntt · Yesterday 23:08

youre the problem

ThatWaryOchreJoker · Today 00:17

They're not furbabies. They're animals. Animals that can be out at night, doing their own thing, coming in through a catflap when it suits them. They don't need you to call. You need to work on your need to call!
But anyway, you've realised, and that's good.
