Overhead neighbours talking about me?

I have always got on with my neighbour who lives a few a doors down.

I have babysat one of her kids and also looked after her cat when she goes on holiday.

She does have a mean girl vibe about her though and she does have a habit of talking about others.

I asked her to do look after my cats and do my bins whilst I was away with DC and she happily agreed.

Whilst I was loading the car I overheard and another neighbour complaining about me calling on my cats every night.

Convo was like

Neighbour 1 "Did you hear her yelling for her cats again?"

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "I heard it but went back to bed".

Neigbour 2 "I can't believe how her neighbours haven't said anything, it's every effing night, literally by their next door neighbours windows every night, literally, I am absolutely sick of it, wakes me up every effing night".

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "Yeah I know as it's as the back it is really loud."

I popped my head up from the passenger seat and they stopped talking.

For reference Neigbour 2 would regularly
play her music at for hours on end so it was ironic hearing her complain about me. I also helped her with her gardening.

I feel this is very 2 faced and want to step back and wondering why they didn't approach me directly instead of talking about me.?

AIBU to not talk to them when I get back of holiday?

I do suffer from anxiety so not sure if I am over reacting here.

Yeah the daily frequent shouting would be annoying to me, you could have just owned it and said to them like a pp says, sorry is that me, didn’t realise i was so loud, then find an alternative
sounds like the neighbour looking after your cats was mainly agreeing and not bitching tbh

So, how frequently, at what time, how loudly, and for how long do you do your evening outside yelling?

Probably annoying right now with windows open, won’t be so bad when it gets colder. It isn’t the worst thing they could be whinging about! I’d shake the food carton a bit or something.

That would be embarrassing to overhear, but it's understandable that one or both of them might be annoyed by the noise yet feel that it's not worth the awkwardness of raising it with you, especially as many people don't care if they disturb their neighbours.

I'd try to be a bit quieter if I could and pretend it never happened.

I’m sorry to be blunt Op but this. You already have several cats in what sounds like a densely populated place. I have a nightmare neighbour who screams her kids all day and on top of it now minds multiple dogs. I’m very very over it but I can’t say anything because it’s too awkward and I’m too nice to shop her to the council about the dogs. But I was considering talking to other neighbours about it as I’m at my wits end.

If it’s every night (rather than just an occasional missing cat emergency), multiple times, after about 7pm then YABVU. Children often go to bed around 7pm ish, and I’d be bloody pissed off if you ended up waking them up by calling your cats in every evening.

They weren’t exactly saying anything rude about you. You should have just said “oh sorry, I’ll try to keep it down”.

Personally Id let the cat or cats roam at night. Mine stays in during the day and goes out, at will, at night. Less cars. Therefore you wont need to call your cats in at night!

Calling cats in is surely normal! I call mine! However, I don't shout loud as they are never far away and it's always before 10pm because that's when they have their supper and then they are locked indoors for the night.

The neighbours weren't really saying anything bad about you, just commenting on your behaviour which is a bit annoying.

Is it? Used to have a cat and never called for it. It was the other way around- he came and told me when he wanted to be let in.

How late are you calling your cats?

I would not worry ive heard some, not all, of my neighbours talking about me but i really dont care. I will still do whst i like in my own home, dont take it personally its only talk

Owned cats for over 20 years and never called them. Come in when they want via a cat flap... Not sure they know their names. Can't imagine why you would do this.

You sound like an irresponsible cat owner frankly. Cat proof your garden, your cats should not be wandering everywhere. Use a proper registered trained cat sitter or cattery when you are on holiday. Stop relying on neighbours to do the work of professionals - looking after your pets. And don’t let your cats wander!

Now you know you're doing something that's annoying others. It may not be the nicest way to find out but at least you can stop shouting in the late evening when people are trying to go to bed and children are sleeping.

Your cats will come home when they want - they are cats ffs!!
Your neighbours are obviously sick to death of you being so selfish.

My neighbour who doesn't work and blasts techno music all day long also does this. She screams at her dog when she won't come in at 1am (yep) after her final back garden wee of the day. Wakes us up every night. Her daughter also gets home at 1am and has the car music absolutely pounding. They are SO noisy. We're actually now going to sell, thanks to them.

Oh, but God forbid we have the car radio on at a reasonable volume when coming home (and yes it is reasonable). She's straight out telling us "jokingly" to keep it down. As my partner says, she just enjoys the interaction and attention, so we've decided not to talk to her anymore.

Do you shout at the cat? I only talk in whispers to my dogs when they go out in the garden for wee after 9pm. I detest the thought of waking anyone. You have no idea how this sort of noise escalates and aggravates when it's day after day.

Why would someone decide not to talk to neighbours after hearing this rather than feel bad she's been waking them up so frequently? Have we turned into a nation of narcissists?

I didn't know cats knew their names. Tbh if they came when called why don't people just call them in early like at 6pm instead of disturbing people late at night.

Go on your holiday, let her look after the cats. Then get a cat flap get the cats used to it.
Then next time u see the 2 neighbours, doesn't matter if theyre not together, do it separately. Say ' just to let you know karen,ive had a cat flap fitted so I won't be disturbing u shouting the cats' walk off and just gray rock her from then on

Very unreasonable, you ought to have more consideration for your neighbours. Imagine getting your baby off to sleep and then suddenly someone outside screaming for MOG MiLO GINGER.... and the rest, mind you not just once in a blue moon but every night. The total disregard for others and lack of self awareness is astounding

I'd be more embarrassed about my antisocial behaviour which disturbs people if I were you and pack it in.
