Overhead neighbours talking about me?

I have always got on with my neighbour who lives a few a doors down.

I have babysat one of her kids and also looked after her cat when she goes on holiday.

She does have a mean girl vibe about her though and she does have a habit of talking about others.

I asked her to do look after my cats and do my bins whilst I was away with DC and she happily agreed.

Whilst I was loading the car I overheard and another neighbour complaining about me calling on my cats every night.

Convo was like

Neighbour 1 "Did you hear her yelling for her cats again?"

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "I heard it but went back to bed".

Neigbour 2 "I can't believe how her neighbours haven't said anything, it's every effing night, literally by their next door neighbours windows every night, literally, I am absolutely sick of it, wakes me up every effing night".

Neighbour who is looking after my cats "Yeah I know as it's as the back it is really loud."

I popped my head up from the passenger seat and they stopped talking.

For reference Neigbour 2 would regularly
play her music at for hours on end so it was ironic hearing her complain about me. I also helped her with her gardening.

I feel this is very 2 faced and want to step back and wondering why they didn't approach me directly instead of talking about me.?

AIBU to not talk to them when I get back of holiday?

I do suffer from anxiety so not sure if I am over reacting here.

I think I'd be popping round with some flowers and saying you overheard them (which they already know if they saw you) and that you're sorry you've been disturbing them.

Have you never had a quiet moan about a neighbour/friend/colleague, OP? Your helpful neighbour sounds as though she was just being polite in her responses to the neighbour who initiated the conversation.

But you have now learned that your shouting for the cats is irritating, so you need to stop. Maybe install a cat flap so that the cats can come on when they're ready.

@crazykatzz listening to someone call their cats in can be infuriating. Don’t they just use the cat flap and come in whenever they feel like it?

I suppose they want you to stop but don’t want to be the one to ask so they gossip hoping one will get annoyed enough to go speak to you.

Just stop. Accept you’ve been annoying and carry on speaking to them.

that would annoy me I have to be honest.

I have many cats and have it sorted so that soon as I shake there treats at night they all come fleeing in together because there ready and hungry for supper..I would be annoyed if I heard countless calls daily tbh

Why? Are you really unaware that it’s antisocial and need people to tell you?
The reason people don’t approach people is because they think “this person can’t be so unaware as to not realise, and therefore they’ve already decided they don’t give a shit”.

You’re calling your cats “late evening and multiple times”. Of course it’s annoying!!!!

It's absolutely normal to moan about anti social behaviour. I like our neighbours but their barking dog annoys me and I moan to another neighbour about it.

Stop shouting your cats late at night! Just keep them in or leave them out.

I didn't realise calling cats in is so annoying. 😆 I don't have a cat flap because I have nowhere to put one and one of my cats is too thick to use one. They go out separately and I sometimes call one of them in in the evening if they're still out. I'm not bellowing but just calling their name and doing a little whistle. 🤣 Not late late though and not every evening. I like mine in by 7-8pm ish.

Shouting names repeatedly will be annoying for your neighbours, find another way.

Seems like a reasonable thing to have a moan about. Stop squawking loudly for your cats every night especially if others are likely in bed.

I have a neighbour who does this for his cats. Drives me insane.
I have cats and not once in 15 years have i called them in. The back doors open all evening . If they are not in by the time I go to bed then they stay out all night. Super simple. And given that cats are quite smart they are in and fast asleep pretty much every day before I shut the door.

Stop the outside shouting then!

Haha I only say the name once and if they're not back I'll leave it. No I don't have a door. 🤣 Well yes I do but it doesn't work with cat flaps, and the cats only go out through the conservatory at the back and I can't put a flap there.

I have a neighbour who takes his dog out and then shouts for it, dog barking, around 11.30pm, it's very irritating, especially as he could supervise the dog!

One call around 8pm is very different than repeatedly shouting for your cats late at night. I'm not sure how much shouting you are doing.

I sometimes shout for mine in the day if I need them in for some reason, but the cat food box rattle usually does the trick.

Bring them in at tea time and shut the door no need for late night yelling?

I used to let my cats out for a wee around 6am and they would come back for breakfast shut them in while the school run went on (we lived by several schools) and let them out after they would then come in for late lunch be shut in for school pick up then out till tea time/supper time in summer (they were dark cats so I kept them in at night) very easy to train took a few weeks their recall was better than my moms "trained" dog

Get the cats in earlier, so nobody is asleep when you do it. You shouldn't be shouting outside late at night.

Kudos for having a cat that responds though. Mine knows its name (ears twitch), but completely ignores me, unless her name is accompanied by the rustle of a chicken wrapper.

It does seem odd that what you took from this was 'my neighbours are rude for talking about me' and not 'my neighbours both think I'm a pain in the arse - maybe they're right?'. You still haven't said how late this shouting happens but if it's waking people up I'm guessing it's pretty late. Either get a cat flap or don't let them out in the first place.

Oh I've just remembered our old neighbours used to shout for their cats every fucking night at 11pm. So annoying. One of the cats clearly hated them because it would take ten minutes of rattling the cat food packet and shouting it's name. Between that and the cats shitting in my garden it was a relief when they moved.

Do cats actually come when you call them? I have three cats who make it clear they are doing whatever the hell they like, but we live in the middle of nowhere so they are not in much danger. They have a stable on the yard with dried food in bowls topped up through the day, beds and toys, and a cat flap so they were the only animals that can access it, and then they sashay down to the house for wet food, cuddles and a snooze on the sofa. But they pretty much have their own routine.
