To think my friend is trying to make me feel bad?

I have a friend who I’ve been friends with for close to 20 years. The last several years were very hard for me. She knows this. Well, the last year things have been looking up for me, not perfect, and I don’t say, “Oh my life is so great now,” but I’ve noticed she tends to bring up the past like very painful topics for me and not offer any support or kindness.

Like she brings up my painful family estrangement every few weeks unprompted and asks the same questions (they haven’t contacted you, how terrible!) knowing I’ve moved, changed my phone number, etc.

She knows the answers, it’s like she’s trying to provoke a reaction. I feel so terrible after talking to her. I’ve told her before I wanted to move on from this. She will also make random jabs about embarrassing moments from my past consistently out of the blue.

Shes going through a hard time now since she’s in her 50s with a young child and she’s never really worked. I stay positive and offer to help her find a job.

Her ex husband can’t hold a job and she was fully reliant on her mom’s income. Her mother passed away earlier this year, and my friend has always had extreme spending issues. I sent her some money for her mom’s funeral. She also stays up all night and will maybe get 3-4 hours of sleep.

I have to say she didn’t use to treat me like this before she was in such a vulnerable position, and I was doing horribly but it’s like since she’s stressed she lashes out at me. Life before she might say something randomly hurtful but now she really digs in salting my wounds. She had a history of being verbally abusive with her exes and her mom.

She also forgot my birthday this year which is no big deal but our birthdays are less than two weeks apart, and a text would’ve been nice considering she always remembers her other childhood friends birthdays.

Maybe she wants you to feel as bad as her?

If someone makes you feed sad after being in their company then they aren't a good friend. Friends enhance your life not make you miserable.

Error404FucksNotFound · 24/08/2026 14:54

Not at all unreasonable.

You should ask her why she does it. Lay it out. Give her a chance to stop. If she won't, maybe you need to pull back a bit.

ByLoftyUmberOtter · 24/08/2026 14:56

That’s what I’m wondering myself, I try to be as neutral as possible by not telling her much about positive things going on in my life because I don’t want to make her feel bad

This. I frankly tell her I’ve moved on from X. I’m in a much better place now and I don’t wish to discuss it so please don’t bring it up again.

And if she doesn’t comply take a step back

The birthday thing seems petty though, I’d let that go.

AgentPidge · 24/08/2026 14:59

Wow. I think this "friendship" has run its course. You divulged very personal things to her because you trusted her. She now seems to be enjoying taunting you. I would - and have - say you aren't going to see her any more, and wish her well. Friends shouldn't make us feel like that.

ByLoftyUmberOtter · 24/08/2026 14:59

I told her a long time ago I wanted to leave it in the past and she will continue bringing it up. She also will call me sensitive for saying anything about it.
I quit talking to her for several months and she reached out to me.

She will dig in saying “mothers love is unconditional” knowing my family situation was terrible growing up

Mind you she will get offended over the smallest perceived slights like someone asking if she’s okay.

I think so too. Like the other day she brought up my family situation then started talking about my cancer scare jokingly asking if I was ready to pass away because I haven’t been to the doctor yet.

She jealous. You have overcome your problems. She has basically self created issues and doesn't like it you are doing well. She probably felt superior in that she was close to her family and didn't have to work...you ruined that by giving her money!!!

Walk away from her, she will only drag you down

So progress to “I have previously told you I do not wish to discuss this. I’m left wondering why you can’t respect my boundaries and what your intentions are?”

The last time she brought it up I was just stunned and basically speechless it literally felt like I’d been punched in the stomach. It hurt terribly

step back from the friendship and end it by fazing her out. She isn’t your friend. She is a taker and she presses on your pain buttons to make herself feel better. That’s nasty and not friendship.

PlumColouredBedding · 24/08/2026 15:14

So call on her BS. Don’t let her away with it.

If she starts going on about a mother’s love literally say “What are your intentions in saying that to me. I’m sorry that you aren’t in a good place but lashing out at me isn’t acceptable.” Make it about her don’t let her turn it around on you.

She’s in a competition with you that she thinks she’s losing.

Why do you continue to hang out with her? She is mean and seeing her makes you feel bad. This isn’t a friendship

OriginalSkang · 24/08/2026 15:18

What do you say now when she brings is it up?

I would stare for a few seconds and then ask "Why are you bringing that up?" And watch her face until she answers

ByLoftyUmberOtter · 24/08/2026 15:20

When she brings it up (our friendship is phone based we live a few hours drive apart) I just say “we know nothing has changed” and try to give grey rock answers basically
She brings it up every few weeks consistently

The woman’s life is a shit show. She has a young child in her 50s (not for the weak!), neither parent works, her source of income has passed away. And she sounds like she has never learnt to manage her emotions.

Id take a massive step back and just be busy.

Loulou4022 · 24/08/2026 15:22

She doesn’t sound like a very nice friend!

ByLoftyUmberOtter · 24/08/2026 15:23

Our friendship is now just on phone calls and text. I feel sorry for her because she doesn’t have much of a support system now but she’s making me feel so terrible I don’t want to talk to her anymore.

She can be pleasant and funny to talk to but she does throw in the random jab about silly things I did when I was much younger or she will dig in on my family trauma

It is definitely a shit show. She’s never been independent as an adult let alone raising a child alone. I offered to help her with her resume and getting a job trying to be encouraging. She’s always had massive spending issues now shes hoping to marry out of her financial mess.

So friggin hang up!!

Say “Im questioning why you keep bringing this up, I’ve asked you previously not to, I’m going to go now as I feel it’s not healthy in a friendship when boundaries are not respected.”

OnlyUsername · 24/08/2026 15:25

You have to tell her to cut it out, and mean it. Not that I would be bothering. You have to walk on eggshells and she's a total bitch to you!

Also - ask her why she is bringing it up. Not in a way where she says "Aw you're so sensitive," but in a way you can firmly say no, I'm not just telling you to shut up, I want to know WHY.

ByLoftyUmberOtter · 24/08/2026 15:27

After the fact I wonder why didn’t hang up but in the moment it’s like I’m stunned and frozen and all of these painful emotions well up

Marry? In her 50s with no job and a child?! That’s the solution? Could she not just get a job and stop pissing away money?!

If she tries to weasel out of it I’d keep going and say I’d think it’s because you don’t like to see me not struggling.
