AIBU to use my tumble dryer for all washing now?

I bought a new tumble dryer on Sat after using a really rubbish one for a few years. It didn't work well and I ended up with laundry on clothes horses all over my flat. Even with a decent dehumidifier running 24/7 it led to mould in some places.

Finally decided I'd had enough when it took 7+ days to get a pillow dry and ordered a condenser tumble dryer. It's amazing and gets stuff dry in no time at all. My laundry also doesn't smell faintly musty any more.

I can technically hang washing out but the washing line is by the bins and there's rats in the courtyard too.

Aibu to ditch the clothes horses and just use my tumble dryer exclusively? It'll be about three loads a week including bedding.

I use mine all the time when I can’t use the washing line because the weather isn’t nice. I wouldn’t ever use a clothes horse in the house because it’d take ages to dry.

I use mine for everything except woollen sweaters and a few particularly precious items. Even use it for bras (though I don’t have underwire ones), just pop those in washing bags for the washing machine and dryer. You will get people saying that you can’t use them because they wreck the clothes, but a good modern one really won’t, unless it is something like pure wool. They come out much nicer and softer (have you done your towels yet?) than the stiff boards that come off drying racks.

You will also get people who think it is somehow immoral to use a nice convenient effective dryer instead of draping clothes messily all over you house, filing it with humidity and getting crispy but still damp clothes, but that’s like people used to be sanctimonious about not using dishwashers or - if you go back a long way - vacuum cleaners. Sure we could all use a bit less electricity if we did all housework by hand, but you need a balance in life. And if you are having to run a dehumidifier 24/7, when drying on racks, I doubt using the dryer for two hours uses any more energy.

I love my tumble dryer but only in the winter. I always use the line in the summer or an Airer outside.

Not everything can go in tumble dryer…

Unfortunately the only line I have access to is right next to the bins which I find utterly gross!

I only have cotton clothes/bedding. No wool or anything particularly fancy.

If it doesn’t go in the tumble dryer, it’s not welcome in my home!

I have a heat pump dryer which is a bit gentler and I put everything in it. Costs peanuts to run too.

Use the dryer!

I have very little room to dry clothes so yes I use it for most laundry.

I used mine in the winter and rainy days. I can't stand clothes horses full of clothes and don't think they dry very well. If it's sunny or windy then I put them out on the line as nothing beats that. But my tumble dryer gets used for towels and everything else if I can't get it outside.

If the alternative is using a dehumidifier constantly then not unreasonable and may not use much more energy anyway.

I use my tumble when i want and love it like you im in a flat, we do have lines outside that i used in the heatwave but im now back to the tumble.
I like to wash dry pack away all done.

Ridiculous suggestion! I am sure you will get loads of support on here though. In real life, the majority of people hang their washing on the line! I know, radical right!

Absolutely go for it. The time I save on drapping clothes on an airing contraption is so worth it. I also have severe allergies to pollen and few members of my family too so even if the weather is nice, I can’t afford to contaminate the clean clothes by hanging them out as it is very triggering for the allergies.

Most people might… but not everyone can!

My garden is surrounded by very tall trees and everything would be covered in bird poo… not a chance I’m using a washing line!

How much does it cost? They used to be pretty expensive on electric. And watch out for fluff and potential fire risk, otherwise go for it.

I would use my tumble dryer but it's rubbish - everything comes out damp and has to go round again to get properly dry. I hate it in winter when I can't hang things out and have to contend with the uselessness of the dryer or find room to put up my heated airer. The last dryer I had was crap too and kept breaking down - what brand is yours? I've been reluctant to get another as I assumed they were all a bit pointless but it would change my life if that's not the case.

I use my tumble dryer for everything that can go in it and a clothes horse for the things that can't. Our garden is crap for trying to dry anything on the washing line, it's a very sheltered south facing garden and even on hot days the washing is still damp by the end of the day and usually covered in insects/fallen leaves and tree detritus.

I use my tumble drier for towels only. It seems to shrink everything else - I just feel like it ruins clothes. Anyway, dh loves hanging out washing. Incomprehensible to me but it keeps him very happy. I think it's just so the neighbours see him doing it.

How do you all keep it from shrinking your cotton clothes? It shrinks all mine.

I used to use mine for absolutely everything but now fish out more delicate items to save them from shrinking or bobbling. Still 90% goes in the drier.

I am the only one of my group of friends who doesn't stress over laundry and only recently realised that they don't have or use driers so need good planning and good weather. I can get 6 loads done in a day easily so I never really worry about it.

Obviously it is not helping the environment, but you make choices.

I take out tops and purposefully buy trousers longer than needed, they don't shrink after first wash.

I think I need to buy a size larger in teeshirts. They always shrink and cling.
