AIBU to use my tumble dryer for all washing now?

I bought a new tumble dryer on Sat after using a really rubbish one for a few years. It didn't work well and I ended up with laundry on clothes horses all over my flat. Even with a decent dehumidifier running 24/7 it led to mould in some places.

Finally decided I'd had enough when it took 7+ days to get a pillow dry and ordered a condenser tumble dryer. It's amazing and gets stuff dry in no time at all. My laundry also doesn't smell faintly musty any more.

I can technically hang washing out but the washing line is by the bins and there's rats in the courtyard too.

Aibu to ditch the clothes horses and just use my tumble dryer exclusively? It'll be about three loads a week including bedding.

I always use a dryer for ten minutes, then transfer clothes to the line after a quick shake. I put the clothes on hangers and use pegs to keep the hangers spaced out on the line. Very few clothes have any visible wrinkles at all. The clothes very rarely blow off and I know the ones that do and peg them up.

The British collective psychology about tumble driers is bizarre for a nation where damp and rain is such a problem. Everyone seems terrified that they cost huge amounts and eat clothing. I have not found this to be the case at all with my heat pump dryer, and anyway it is much easier to replace ruined clothing than parts of your house or other belongings which get ruined by damp and mould caused by indoor drying.

We’re the same. Ended up buying a tumble dryer of our own when the launderette we were taking towels/bedding etc. to in the winter months, to get them dried, suddenly closed for about 2 weeks unexpectedly… with our bedding/towels waiting to be collected . Buying a tumble dryer was one of the best investments we made. Even my mother has one now. I can remember so many autumn/winter/even spring days having to run outside and bring the washing in because it had started pissing down. I’d say 7 times out of 10 (at least) you’re better off tumble drying between October-March.

I hate to see clothes all over the house/flat and me personally would use drier. Done & dusted one day. Where as dp put them on radiators , hangs on hangers on doors and outs in washing line. I hate it there all so hard when dried

I understand if you can’t afford it though and this is the only alternative

I never use the hottest setting and don't have that issue.

Please tell us which TD you bought- I hate dryers which take 10 hours to give you a sad damp load of washing when you’ve been looking forward to warm soft dry things!

I use mine for anything that will go in it. (Some dressier clothes and some exercise clothes say line dry only, but that's not so bad as it's only a handful of things.)

Oh, and my husband's bath towel. He's weird and prefers it crunchy from the line rather than soft from the dryer. I don't get it.

That because heat pump uses very little energy. Like 60% less than condensing. Considering half of mn does twohundred washes a day that's easily about tenner on just drying a week?

Why would you be unreasonable for using an appliance for what it's designed for? I love mine and use it all the time when I can't peg the washing out!

We use our tumble dryer all year round. It’s do convenient, we’re too lazy to peg out washing and I don’t want to sit in my garden looking at laundry.

However, our newish, vented dryer is crap. The 20 year old one it replaced was much better. What model is yours, OP?

Do what you want but personally I don’t want a big electricity bill, I put mine on the line as much as possible and have just discovered the benefits of a dehumidifier in the winter, it’s amazing! Doesn’t shrink all our clothes either.

Unfortunately, I have a smart meter and can see exactly how much each cycle costs so no way I'd be using it in summer. I'd probably put close horse in the garden (if there is one). But if you are not bothered about the cost, have at it.

Yes! You can’t beat a fresh, clean, crispy towel, straight off the washing line!

I use mine exclusively for everything. Even in this warm summer everything goes in! Lush!!

It's this one. It's been brilliant so far, drys really quickly. Not too worried about the electricity costs; it'll only be on for a couple of hours a week.

The only outside space I have access to is this which has the bins and there's been rats spotted too. Not really somewhere I want to hang my laundry unfortunately.

Do you hang yours next to bins and rats? Op doesn't live with a white picket fence...imagine that.

Buy a new one!!! Don't go another winter trying to dry clothes, life is too short.

What type of condenser op? Our condenser never did the job, have had it five years and it’s hit and miss whether anything gets dry, and things certainly never get fully dry!!!

I’ve never fully tumble dried things like towels, I just put them in for twenty minutes after being in the clothes horse, line or radiator but you use yours three times a week- I have two washes a day! Enjoy the dryer!!

I use a tumbledryer for everything that will go in it. I dry t shirts on a cool setting and they don't seem to shrink and my jeans definitely don't. My current one is a condenser and when it finally dies, I will look at a heat pump one. I don't know what it costs to run but my electricity bill is reasonable so I don't worry about it. For those who like to nag about carbon footprint, I never fly, don't take holidays or drive much.

I still use the dryer for towels in the summer. I don't like using fabric conditioner. OH doesn't mind crispy towels so still hangs his outside
