Husband won't drive

Tdp123 · 23/08/2026 13:18

My husband has a driving license but decided about 15 years ago that he doesn't like driving, so he hasn't been behind the wheel since.

We are currently on holiday in a remote part of the UK—a destination that he chose and booked. We both enjoy having a drink with dinner.

Tonight is our last night, and he is currently throwing a massive strop. He even called me a "cunt" because I am refusing to drive 30 minutes each way to go out for dinner, which would mean he gets to drink while I have to stay sober to drive us back.

I have cooked, served, and washed up every single evening on this holiday. I am happy to do the same tonight, especially since we have plenty of nice food and drink right here in our beautiful accommodation that will otherwise go to waste.

Am I being unreasonable here?

If my husband called me a cunt and was such a selfish pig, I would pack my bags, get in the car and drive home. I would be getting started on the divorce arrangements while he was making his useless, abusive way home.

Would it not be easier to get a taxi tonight? I think your husband was unreasonable to have called you names, but I think you’re being unreasonable not wanting to go out on the last night of your holiday. It wouldn’t seem like a holiday at all to me if I ate in my accommodation every night.

I think the point is it hasn't been much of a holiday for the OP anyway .. she's done all the cooking, serving and cleaning while they've been away from their house ... imagine it's the same at home for her. I don't blame her frankly at this point and she should be questioning if she wants to spend the rest of her life like this. She is NOT being unreasonable. At all.

Teado · 23/08/2026 14:38

He doesn’t like or respect you very much. Whether you stay with him is up to you.

MimiGC · 23/08/2026 14:38

I agree with the others- drive home without him and when he asks why, tell him it’s because he called you a C and sat on his arse all holiday, letting you do all the cooking and cleaning. Time to wake up and smell the coffee, OP.

viques · 23/08/2026 14:39

I think I would wait until the car is all packed up for the journey home then ask him to nip out and double check that you had turned the cooker off/ locked the back door/ picked up his toothbrush from the bathroom.

Then I would drive off with the radio playing Donna Summer all the way.

An alternative would be, drive to the nice restaurant tonight as planned. Knock back a couple of large g and t as soon as you arrive. Smile sweetly and hand over the car keys “ Oops, forgot I was supposed to be driving dear. Shall I order you an orange juice?”

Gengha · 23/08/2026 14:40

Drive yourself home and start plans for divorce. Never drive him anywhere again as long as you live. Calling you a cunt is completely disgusting

blackcatlove · 23/08/2026 14:41

Why are you treating him like a small child and cooking and clearing up all the time? No wonder he disrespects you.

Bizkibee · 23/08/2026 14:42

Well he doesn't know what side his bread is buttered, does he?

BitOutOfPractice · 23/08/2026 14:44

Being called a cunt would end it for me.

He sounds like an arsehole op.

Anyone not driving is reasonable. Given how many people there are unfit to hold a licence but still allowed to drive.

However, use of the C word, or choosing holidays with no walking or public transport option, that is 100% unreasonable.

Anyone not driving is reasonable.

Not when you expect someone else to do it for you and thus enjoy all the benefits, even though you are actually able to do it yourself..

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 23/08/2026 14:45

Tdp123 · 23/08/2026 13:42

Could do, but it would be at least 50 quid each way which would put me off.

Your husband is not bothered about booking something so far away as he has his own taxi driver.
Are you going to cook him a dinner after he called you a cunt?

BunnyLake · 23/08/2026 14:51

Tdp123 · 23/08/2026 13:22

Well, you doubt yourself sometimes when the other person is so sure. Just wanted to garner other opinions.

He called you a cunt.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 23/08/2026 14:52

Take absolutely everything else out of it, he'd be an ex for me the first time he called me a cunt (or any other name in anger quite frankly).

I don't do relationships with people who set out to intentionally hurt me. Why are you willing to put up with it @Tdp123

Hanksness · 23/08/2026 14:54

Have you had children with this scumbag?
If not, what are you doing in a clearly verbally abusive relationship?

manysausages · 23/08/2026 14:54

What’s the difference between him not wanting to drive tonight and you not wanting to drive tonight? Why is it alright for him but you’re a cunt?

wizzler · 23/08/2026 14:55

Why is it ok for him not to drive for 15 years but you can’t have a night off ? He sounds a real prince.

Softcream · 23/08/2026 13:25

He is being massively unreasonable.

Also, if my DH ever calls me a cunt I will divorce him.

mine whilst going back out to work after being sexually inappropriate
and me rebuffing him, called me a prickteaser - I was so shocked I
couldn’t speak - it wasn’t just the words, but the twisted look on his face
whilst he spat out his venom
divorce didn’t happen immediately but it was a watershed moment
he phoned later to apologise but the harm was done - the mask had
not so much dropped as been snatched off

I was waiting for my flight call when a middle aged well dressed attractive
couple, wife clutching toddler, dad trailing couple of kids came rushing past
us all down an escalator, they were late, he was screaming!
you cunt, I’ll get you for this, cunt, on and on, going on holiday together,
to have a lovely time, relax, be together, children crying, wife appeared immune
Ive never forgotten this, vitriol, unpleasant for everyone, his contempt

Dr Greer famously wrote that women have no idea how much men hate us

latetothefisting · 23/08/2026 14:17

unreasonable to still be with someone who calls you a cunt, yes.

perhaps this happens regularly as a matter of course and not just a one off
as we are assuming

Bringflowersofthefairest · 23/08/2026 15:11

I wouldn’t be ferrying him around ever again after that.
Tell him if he wants a personal chauffeur he can pay for one the nasty piece of work!

Bogliasco · 23/08/2026 15:13

It's been convenient for him to have you drive him round for 15 years and today you've decided that's enough. I quite agree. He wants to travel to somewhere without the hassle of driving for 30 minutes and having to stay sober to drive home. Of course he wants to go. Very understandable. It's an easy option for him.

What is unforgivable is calling you the C word. Completely unacceptable for a husband and one who's benefited from his wife as a free taxi for 15 years. Instead of being grateful he calls you the C word. I'd stop the taxiing today and refuse to do anything other than drive him home until he's driven you enough times to make up for the last 15 years. What a shit. That's what he really thinks of you, your time, your efforts and your preference to have a drink with dinner.

JohnofWessex · 23/08/2026 15:13

How does it all work at home?

Do you live in London where there is a lot of public transport?

ElsiePiddockSkipsinherSleep · 23/08/2026 15:14

More fool you, OP. The opting out of driving is pathetic enough. The calling you a cunt is something you should see as the death knell. Why on earth would you question if this is ok?

Metromayhem · 23/08/2026 15:15

Growlybear83 · 23/08/2026 13:39

Simple then- husband can drive! Selfish prick.

Silverbirchleaf · 23/08/2026 15:26

I’m not a keen driver so dh does most of the driving. However, I woukdn’t get cross if he didn’t want to drive, and there’s other options to eat. W’d either get a taxi or eat more locally.

Wickedwhiskers · 23/08/2026 15:28

I have a non driving husband too. If he'd called me a cunt he wouldn be finding himself being divorced!
