Feels a bit weird this time of year

End of August, start of September makes me feel a certain way, anyone else feel weird this time of year?
I love Autumn, but all the build up, brightness and fun at the start of summer has gone.
It feels a bit melancholy and quieter.

I quite enjoy this time of year. It's been an amazing summer but I'm always ready for it to end. Autumn is a busy time for us as there's seasonal events, our DD's birthday, DH's birthday, pretty much half of my DD's class's birthday parties are in November it seems. By the time Christmas is over and done with half of winter is gone.
It's January to March I don't particularly like. Thankfully this time round we're in Disney in February so something to look forward to.

I normally feel it at the start of September, that back to school feeling when the mornings are slightly colder and the nights have really drawn in during August.

I especially felt it when I was a professional gardener and I was no longer being asked to plant bedding plants but was starting to make plans to get gardens winter ready and when I was going to prune apple and pear trees.

Thecatspantaloons · 22/08/2026 16:29

I agree 💯. I feel in limbo, but also like we could have one more hot spell before it's gone until next year.
I started looking at a new winter coat whilst also looking at sandals.

I love the autumn and I really don’t like the hot weather at all
I’ve got autumn decorations and things ready to go and enjoy the back to school time.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 22/08/2026 16:45

Always feels bittersweet this time of year

Loulou4022 · 22/08/2026 16:47

I always feel like it’s just me because I know I’m back to work at the beginning of September. But the light is definitely changing, it’s cooler somehow, darker nights and mornings.

newnewnamename · 22/08/2026 16:47

Try being a farmer who usually harvests between now and the end of September but actually finished 2 weeks ago - that is really messing with my head!

StormySam · 22/08/2026 16:48

Youngest starts secondary school in Sep so I am feeling really weird atm. No more autumn walks on the school run watching the seasons change.

Monty36 · 22/08/2026 16:51

It is because nature is going to bed so to speak. It is natural I think to feel as if you should hibernate. I don’t mean you personally….
I love autumn for the colour and the food. I also love spring. I even like rain which I know is unusual.
Least favourite is Winter which I dislike. Apart from Christmas.
Summer can be nice it depends just how furious the heat is. I haven’t enjoyed it this year. Too much misery, fires, loss and angry heat.
Yes, it feels a funny time of year. A change of season.

FeliciaFancybottom · 22/08/2026 16:54

I can feel my mood dropping in anticipation of the dark nights and crappy weather, I hate Autumn and Winter.

Lilmisspeacekeeper · 22/08/2026 16:57

I always feel quite sad at this time of the year too. Thought it was only me!

The swifts have gone home.
The mornings and nights are slowly getting darker.
There's a chill in the air as the earth tilts away from the sun.
The leaves on the trees are going brown and falling.
Flowers are dying and withering.

So yes I feel a little melancholic at this time of the year.

What does this mean? Why?

Pulp sum this feeling up well in David's Last Summer (1994): "The whole sound of Summer packing its bags and preparing to leave town."

FFSItsTooHot · 22/08/2026 17:05

I love autumn,it's my favourite time of year, and I really couldn't cope with the continual hit weather,it was making me feel ill.

PinkWaffleMaker · 22/08/2026 17:06

I'm ready for September to hurry up and start and for routine to come back!

aliasfrog · 22/08/2026 17:31

It's the rhythm of the seasons. We are winding down for winter when we spend more time resting. There's beauty in every time of the year, it's just different.

shellyleppard · 22/08/2026 17:35

I'm actually looking forward to September. Eldest one starts his apprenticeship. Youngest starts a new course at college. So will have the house to myself again

Morethanalover · 22/08/2026 17:41

I think August is my least favourite month.
There's a melancholy and feeling of panic attached to it.
It's like a month of Sunday evenings.

I'm planning on getting under a threadbare blanket and getting into an awkward position with a bad book and a pint of gin.

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 22/08/2026 17:52

I am another one that loves autumn and can't wait for the hot, sticky, insect filled summer to end.

September always feels like my 'new year' in terms of a fresh start. If I am ever motivated to start something like a new project, it's September, I love it.

MightyGoldBear · 22/08/2026 17:55

This time of year has a Sunday evening feel to it knowing your back at work/school Monday. A end of the party vibe. Anticipation of something new/new beginnings.
Although I am very happy to not be melting anymore.

SquadGoals75 · 22/08/2026 18:00

I feel so weird. I love summer, even the heat waves. Can’t stand winter, dark mornings, dark evenings, freezing weather, rain, Halloween and Christmas.

Overspent over summer (although I had a blast) so can’t even spend any money to cheer myself up.

Sorry for the moan. No advice but you’re not alone.

Dilemma999 · 22/08/2026 18:00

I love this time of year. The frenetic start to summer has slowed, the kids go back and there’s a lovely, mellow light. The trees are starting to turn colourful. It’s beautiful but the light is going quickly now at night which makes me feel a bit sad.

Epoisses · 22/08/2026 18:04

I love September! To me is the beginning of a new year. We have 4 trips booked to look forward to that month.

RemindMeIn15Minutes · 22/08/2026 18:12

Yes, I’m feeling it too, this week. It feels like summer suddenly ended when it went cold, grey and rainy. Not helped by stress and feeling unwell too.

MeinKraft · 22/08/2026 18:20

Autumn is a really atmosphere time of year and the change of season from summer - winter is probably the most dramatic whereas most seasonal changes are just a slow creep. Every year it’s shocking how quickly it changes from ice creams, paddling pools and flip flops to dark at 7.30pm and making stews and hot chocolates.
