Feels a bit weird this time of year

End of August, start of September makes me feel a certain way, anyone else feel weird this time of year?
I love Autumn, but all the build up, brightness and fun at the start of summer has gone.
It feels a bit melancholy and quieter.

I always feel really weird at this time of year, like a previous poster put it really does feel like a month of Sunday evenings. I actually like the cooler weather but I still seem to get that back to school anxious feeling despite being in my thirties!

I am another one that loves autumn and can't wait for the hot, sticky, insect filled summer to end.

September always feels like my 'new year' in terms of a fresh start. If I am ever motivated to start something like a new project, it's September, I love it.

Problem is, the sticky, insect filled Summer is replaced by the giant-spiders-spinning-their-webs-on-my-windows-September and then taking residence!

I am the opposite, I feel like I am coming to life again after feeling stifled by summer. I am autumn/winter lover, I like the long nights, the clothes, the food, the smell of the air, the sense of new beginnings right now with the upcoming start of the academic year, I even don't mind the rain! The only good thing I miss about summers is not being able to dry washing outside :)

Are you me?!

I can't help but think about Princess Diana at this time of year as these were her last couple of weeks on earth. I know, weird eh!

EmeraldRoulette · 22/08/2026 21:00

I usually feel a bit strange at this time of year

But not this time! Summer has been absolutely dreadful in my part of the world and I normally love it. It's been too hot to get anything done, day trips, etc

The last few days have been so nice, actual proper summer days of about 20 to 22°. And fresh air. So I'm hoping to use this next month or so as actual summer. We've got one 27 ° day next week. But apart from that, the forecast is basically this.

it's lack of sunshine that does my head in winter rather than early dark. Anyway, the summer has been so drastic it's changed something for me.

stressedkitten · 22/08/2026 21:38

I know what you mean. I'm a teacher so it back to work but I kind of look forward to the routine again and all the events leading up to Christmas - it's a busy but exciting time! I'm also due a baby in December so looking forward to not being pregnant anymore! I had my last baby in summer, so it might be nice to have a baby when the world seems to hibernate and slow down a bit anyway!
But yes, it does feel like it's all coming to a close but it won't be long until we're here again.

CoffeeandCakeBreak · 22/08/2026 21:55

It's a strange transition, that carries a sense of grief and loss with it I think.

I don't experience low mood or SAD, but I do feel sadness that the travel season is coming to an end. I absolutely love the sunshine and warm weather, and travel a lot. I always have a trip in September, and usually feel as though I depart in summer and return in Autumn. This trip usually helps with the transition in seasons, and I feel I can accept the end of summer with this one last trip for the year.

I am currently away now, but it sort of feels like this already. It doesn't feel like bad summer weather, which does often happen, it feels like autumn has come early. It been pleasant enough today, but really chilly. I hope we have an Indian summer. It doesn't need to be super hot, but I really want summer to last until returning from my September trip.

EmeraldRoulette · 22/08/2026 21:58

I normally start to feel quite sad around late September - I think it says something about what summer is like in the Southeast because I don’t understand all these posts talking about autumn. It doesn’t feel like autumn at all here. And it’s only the 22nd of August I’m slightly puzzled that people are talking about it but it will be to do with your local weather.

toastycold · 22/08/2026 22:04

I always feel weird and a bit low the last two weeks of August. My mood lifts once September is here.

Sherararara · 22/08/2026 22:06

It’s the depression that sets in knowing the shops will be soon be full of Xmas crap in September.

Pearandavocado · 22/08/2026 22:07

I hate it. I never get enough of a Summer or a Summer at all tbh. So I don't feel ready for Autumn. I feel really sad every year, kids have left school now but still feel the same. I do love Autumn but just not yet, probably not until October. I just want to go away and enjoy the summer

Yes that's weird. It was nearly 30 years ago and you think about her every August?

middleagedandinarage · 22/08/2026 22:09

Yep, we're scotland so kids have just gone back to school. Weather's been a bit cold and damp but not enough to have that coay autumn feeling. Just feeling a little meh

Gealach · 22/08/2026 22:11

There is this financial woe, where summer was great but expensive and back to school is expensive and Christmas seems too close because it’s also very expensive!

But otherwise I love autumn. The last of August feels like we are just in a waiting room though for “back to school”

Have you visited Althorp? It’s open from Diana’s birthday to the day she died every year. Well worth a visit.

piscofrisco · 22/08/2026 22:34

August has always felt like one long Sunday night to me. Everything is past its best, everyone is fed up and skint as the summer holidays end, the weather is rarely as good as you would like it to be, it just sucks .A dog of a month.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 22/08/2026 22:34

I hate it - I love summer and am moving to maximise hot weather and minimise/ eliminate damp grey cold northern hemisphere winters. Autumn can be nice though.

JuliettaCaeser · 22/08/2026 22:37

Taylor Swift’s August also captures this feeling

Qualitypinnacle · 22/08/2026 22:38

I agree Pearandavocado, if there was no sign of Christmas until at least November I wouldn't start feeling down at this time of year

piscofrisco · 22/08/2026 22:39

newnewnamename · 22/08/2026 16:47

Try being a farmer who usually harvests between now and the end of September but actually finished 2 weeks ago - that is really messing with my head!

Yes to this. I work on a farm and everything is weird this year. It’s discombobulating.

Qualitypinnacle · 22/08/2026 22:39

Sorry, I meant Shrararara!

USaYwHatNow · 22/08/2026 23:09

I normally love autumn but this year I'm not looking forward to it and I'm not sure why.

Palomiino · 22/08/2026 23:11

I feel the same!
