Feels a bit weird this time of year

End of August, start of September makes me feel a certain way, anyone else feel weird this time of year?
I love Autumn, but all the build up, brightness and fun at the start of summer has gone.
It feels a bit melancholy and quieter.

No but I do feel that way when spring comes

dietcokeandapizzaplease16 · 23/08/2026 01:11

Yes I agree with the melancholy feeling.

summer has always been my favourite season….but just lately I’ve now decided my favourite is actually spring - because in spring you are looking forward to summer.

For the same reason, my favourite day of the week is now Friday, not Saturday.

PP said ther least favourite is Jan-March. Yes, they are miserable months, BUT by March, spring is just around the corner. Whereas in September it’s a looong time till next spring/summer.

I think it’s something to do with getting older, and time passing too quickly.

It’s the depression that sets in knowing the shops will be soon be full of Xmas crap in September.

This!! 100%. Crap being the operative word.

Maybe I’m an optimist but I like this time. There is still warmth. I’m sitting here feeling warmth and looking at the sea. Love spring and summer. To me

September is lovely.
October and November are proper autumn very enjoyable leaves coffee Halloween etc.
December is Christmas magic and seeing family and friends
January is fresh new start feeling
Admit Feb - April even my optimism fails me!

intsjl26 · 23/08/2026 09:20

I do know what you mean, there’s a vibe, the sun is getting lower, nights drawing in is more noticeable, a cloudy day at the end of the month some how feels different to the start. There’s an element of summer coming to an end, even though I love autumn/Christmas it does feel a bit heavy, time is passing on kind of feeling.

September always feels like a new start to me like a mini January in the year, so it’s a similar feeling for me where it is a mixed feeling of excitement for what’s to come but sadness at more time having past.

OriginalSkang · 23/08/2026 09:22

I feel like this normally, but the recent weather has got rid of that entirely. I was happy to be able to have a hot shower today

MrsMouse03 · 23/08/2026 09:26

I always say August is one of my least favourite months as just feels sad somehow. I lost my lovely mum in July so really feeling it this year .

I love the change in seasons and the new scenery it brings, I think I'd find it difficult to live somewhere that doesn't have traditional seasons.

I really don't like January and February though, spring is my favourite season so I'm always ready to leave winter behind.

FedUpCelery · 23/08/2026 10:18

It's a funny old time because we are meant to be winding down but everything is starting back up - uni, college etc bringing with it lots of unknowns and changes.

There's also lots I still want to fit in - a last music festival and a few more day trips, while dealing with less settled weather, nights drawing in quickly and so many changes to prepare for.
It doesn't feel gradual it feels like a cliff edge

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 23/08/2026 10:25

I've got double melancholy because my middle DD (who came over for a few weeks for her sister's wedding) has just flown back. She brought over her baby son, so I've had a couple of weeks of cuddling and fussing my grandson and he's now gone back to the other side of the world with her. And the wedding, which was ages in the anticipation is now over too.

So everything is feeling really flat and it doesn't help that autumn seems to have suddenly come crashing in after a beautiful summer. I don't hate autumn but I prefer the long warm days of summer and the short nights and it takes a bit of time to get used to dark evenings and the general feeling of things being over.

Good job I really look forward to Christmas!

YANBU. I completely agree, I feel exactly the same. It feels in limbo between the Summer holidays ending and back to school not quite starting yet. It feels odd!

Silverbirchleaf · Yesterday 17:58

I’m washing my shorts and wondering whether that’s it for this year, and that makes me sad. I’ve liked that we’ve had day after day of hot sunny weather, although I admit that the extreme heat was a bit much. I don’t mind Autumn as such, except that’s it’s the prelude to winter. To be honest, what I fear most is snow and icy conditions making it treacherous to go out.

I tend to feel the passing of time this time of year, much more than say, Christmas, or New Year. Suddenly my children seem a little taller, older, wiser, as they approach the next school year. Feeling it more this year as my youngest is off to secondary and my eldest is off to college. Where do the years go hey? 😢. It all coincides with the change of the weather, you can sense it.

What does this mean? Why?

The summer was so hot and dry that farmers were able to finish harvest much much earlier than normal

Vodkamartini3olives · Yesterday 18:39

I love this time of year it's full of so much promise. The kids start a new academic year, sometimes at a new school or college. We debrief the summer for our business and think what new things we will add for next summer season. I'm looking forward to all the lovely Autumn events to come and the start of ski / snow season. The tourist are starting to think out and a sense of calm is setting in.

tanktopper · Yesterday 18:45

I feel this. I think years of being a kid and the school summer hols ending and the thought of going back to school created this feeling from a young age. It's like Sunday afternoon feeling but worse.

Nationaltrusty · Yesterday 18:59

I love September and October, they've always been my favourite months. That feeling in the air when you go out in the morning and things just 'feel autumnal'. I love the feeling of getting back to into a routine and the light and colours are beautiful, with the temperatures being much more conducive to getting out and doing stuff.

I do like spring and summer, particularly the gardening elements. However I don't like August. I know that lots of us have experienced - too - high temperatures this month, but in general August tends to be rainier and duller. When I was working nothing significant was planned due to so many people taking holidays and everything got going again in September. Now that I'm retired, I've realised I need to rethink what I do in August. It's all very well taking my holidays outside of school holidays, but that leaves a long month where nothing much happens. Lots of interest groups take a break, no decent films released, very little decent theatre and it has all felt a bit flat. It's a 'meh' month for me so roll on September.

“season of mists and mellow fruitfulness….”

IwanttoWFH · Yesterday 19:15

My favourite season is spring. Everything feels full of hope and the weather gets better.
I’m not a massive fun of summer. I always look forward to autumn, being able to wear a jumper and sleep under the duvet again. This horrendous summer has made me look forward to autumn even more.
I’m not a fan of Christmas, either. Just spring and autumn appeals to me!
