Stopping the boats is easy...

All we have to do is abandon the ECHR, the Refugee Convention, the UN, the G7, NATO and the WTO. Then we can break maritime law and start sinking the boats. Obviously we'd have to proscribe the RNLI and change the job description of the coast guard to encourage people who want to sink boats to sign up. The fishermen will be fine.
Once we start with this deterrent we can start kicking out other undesirables. I'd start with the students. Coming over here using our universities as a gateway to benefits street. So we ban them, no more student visas. We might see a few universities close but no great loss, you learn more in the school of life.
After that take away access to ALL benefits for anyone not born here. Don't care if you've always worked and paid your taxes you're not ENGERLISH so less Dr Khalid more Dr Callum.
Obviously once we start making Britain Great again there may be a couple of teensy issues. Food might cost a lot more because the lefty EU might not want to trade with a nation that wants to isolate itself and kill innocent people. It'll be fine because there will be 100% employment because instead of benefits you'll have to do your 60 hours on the food farm to earn your pound credits.
Family will be legally obliged to look after any living relative as there won't be anyone left to do it because we deported them all. And obviously the NHS was full of loony lefties who went round caring for people instead of focusing on what really mattered, which is profit.
They're just a couple of the benefits of stopping the boats, because who cares about the bigger picture or unintended consequences eh?
Giving up our place on the world stage is a small price to pay for stopping a handful of people coming from countries we benefited from or bombed isn't it?

I dont think turning back at sea is easy as its turning them back to France who presumably will say non and thiers no international water between us.

We arent blessed with small Pacific islands to put detention centres on.

I dont really know what the other measures involve.

We do have some uninhabited islands.

We can draft our own laws aligning with our own values.

Yes I remember my history - that's what happened in Germany . . .

Probably because she is a Christian on top and vocal about it. And the idea is to completely erase this from this once great country

Who is proposing erasing Christianity and how?

No, the UK isn't going to go Nazi by drafting its own human rights law. That's an absolutely wild take.

Then why are they traveling to the UK? I refer to my previous answer...belief they will get Benefits/housing etc.

Unemployment benefit - for a single person per week

France £127.60
UK £95.55

Please keep up. The UK drafted it's own Human Rights Act in 1998. It was ratified in 2000 and has been enshrined in UK law ever since. Next . . .

Long answer short. Yes. Many of them are carrying mobile phones, tablets and laptops and guess what....they are connected to the internet. And guess what they're googling!

So the " they is just poor dumb natives coming here to be educated by the mother country" is not only completely and utterly wrong it's also actually demeaning to the people coming.

People don't travel half way round the world to go on benefits in the UK. Jesus wept.

enpeatea · 22/08/2026 23:00

I hate this attitude. My father was a refugee after ww2. Apparently according to some I should be sent (back?) to his country of birth even though I am now 74 Though maybe not as I am white and not Muslim. (But actually do not have any religion)
re the current fuss about the Home Office booklet; during the war Polish officers had to be instructed in how to treat people here with respect. Nothing new then.

But France doesn't give people that unless they have actually worked in France in the previous year. They don't give benefits to asylum seekers and only approx 33% get asylum

Yes they do. Or at least come here to be housed, fed, and get free treatment on the NHS. Then there's free education. Free meals for kids. Do please wake up.

Yes they want to work. But we have 2 million people unemployed already so where are all the jobs for these immigrants.

They need a home...it's a stated policy to build 1.5 million new homes...where?

The NHS is creaking as is education...where's the money going to come from.

If we take small boats alone year to date approx 15,000 have arrived. So if no one else arrives and that's the average number and it's maintained for 10 years that's basically the population of Oxford arriving.

No he was a refugee. These are economic migrants. That's the difference. I expect he arrived with next to nothing.

These are able to pay thousands to leave a safe country to travel to another safe country.

BrillantBriony · 22/08/2026 23:18

You can’t keep leaving supranational political and economic organisations every time a problem you thought Brexit would solve remains unsolved. If you think about it critically, the logical conclusion should be that repeatedly separating ourselves from these organisations isn’t working. I genuinely can’t fathom how you could conclude that repeating Brexit over and over again is somehow the definition of sanity.

The country needs a revolution. No leaders, politicians, or men in grey suits seem to have any interest in anything other than lining their own pockets. Change will come only when people unite, stop clocking in to work, and take to the streets—day after day, night after night. The problem is that people are very, very passive, and don’t want to miss the telly.

Plus a rather fragile economy would collapse which is a bit baby and bathwater.

I think the next election and how successful reform will be, even if they don't win a huge number of seats due to the very likely tactical voting, will scare politicians of the two big parties to actually accept that there is an issue and just because Islington isn't effected and isn't lovely to get the volvo valeted so cheaply, they will do something

Why are you so sure about that? 72% of Somalians in the UK get social housing for instance, with a lot of that being in London. Quite an incentive.

Actually, single asylum seekers in France receive €6.90 per day.

Why not head for a safe Muslim country? Surely they need doctors and engineers too!

Not true. Intelligent people now read global news. From what you are saying I assume you are not foreign because what is it you are doing on a global English speaking website?

I’m not English - this site isn’t limited to English nationals. Most people focus on news relating to their own country, news that impacts them. (BTW - I am intelligent!)

They often borrow the money from the gang master, and then have to work to pay it back.

Thank you I regularly get those mixed up. You are correct, I think in West Country you see and your lucky that most things don't start with yer, that I leave out all the to's, and innits and that every word that ends in a vowel don't have an L added.

Mind you, your user name sounds lush in my accent. My cat is reel

Actually if they were picked up at Dover, driven straight to a detention centre for permanent holding until deportation, no phones given, no day trips out, no tvs or PlayStations provided, basic meals and board, no access to legal aid, no dumping in HMOs, hotels or others, no being allowed to roam free and all applications rejected I reckon most would not come ….

It’s not required, Australia hasn’t done all this but not even those on the left want to go back to deaths at sea.

EasternStandard · 23/08/2026 15:40

Owninterpreter · 22/08/2026 20:49

They were hypothetical reasons someone might have for believing political parties are chosing not to solve the problem.

Noone has answered why, other than its not actually that easy, noone has done it when its clearly a vote winner, even with fairly liberal people who prefer safer firms if asylum seeking.

I was genuinely trying to find out why people think this and the previous government's dont do this very easy thing at the risk of losing power over not doing it.

My personal opion was because its not actually easy.

Mandate would be needed first via votes, and as seen on here not everyone agrees.

The parties on the left won’t run on leaving the ECHR for example.
