I should've coughed up for a Mumsnet subscription ages ago

Having suffered the umpteenth browser memory failure of the day and reached meltdown point with pages jumping all over the place due to my ad blocker - I've subscribed 🥳 Thirty quid a year for a seamless Mumsnet experience.

I've only been a subscriber for 20 minutes or so, and my stress level has already halved! It's cheaper than Netflix, and I spend more time on here tbh.

Via the App Store or just search it in your browser.

That's weird, it's not unusual nor regional as far as I've noticed. I've lived in several area and heard it in all of them.

"Make sure John's coughed up before you book it - he's got long pockets and short arms!"

If it is, it's massively backfired! Just free-user after free-user saying it works perfectly well without paying! I can't think of a single reason to pay for a subscription.

Has Mumsnet ever released stats on how many have signed up?

Aristos have definitely said “cough up, old chap”.
I just saw a snippet on YouTube this morning of Hugh Laurie playing Dr House and he said cough up, but not in a medical context, in a money one.

How dare you call the late Queen classless.

Then google and widen your experience. It’s an idiomatic expression that’s widely used.

It’s been in circulation as an idiom since the 1870s according to Google.

I subscribe because I value MN.

But I managed to subscribe with the wrong email address (I have a "grown up" address for things like payments and a different one for fun and social media stuff, and I forgot my MN account was already on the fun one) so I get none of the benefit and all of the ads 😂

I subscribed because my phone kept getting hot with all the ads and pages reloading. I was charging my phone constantly. It’s much happier now! I don’t even notice the fee going out.

You can do that without a subscription - at least with the OP’s posts on a thread.

With Premium you can do it without all posters on a thread - it’s actually very useful sometimes!

Can I ask if you pay £2.99 a month like I do, or £2.50 a month like the OP says they do?

I use Opera solely for Mumsnet. It's sandboxed so it's nasty little trackers can't follow me anywhere. I also have a good adblocker running. The site is unusable without.

I help create content. As far as I'm concerned that is my payment to them.

Because instead of bending to the demands of activists, bullies and institutionally captured advertisers, Mumsnet provided a platform for feminists to discuss women's rights, exchange ideas and data, and to organise. It can't have been easy, but it was absolutely vital for women's rights.

Without Mumsnet there's no For Women Scotland. No Supreme Court ruling. Countless local campaigns and networks found each other here. Sarah Petersen's excellent book charts the rise of grass routes feminism via Mumsnet.

For that reason alone they are worth my couple of quid a month.
