I should've coughed up for a Mumsnet subscription ages ago

Having suffered the umpteenth browser memory failure of the day and reached meltdown point with pages jumping all over the place due to my ad blocker - I've subscribed 🥳 Thirty quid a year for a seamless Mumsnet experience.

I've only been a subscriber for 20 minutes or so, and my stress level has already halved! It's cheaper than Netflix, and I spend more time on here tbh.

Just to defend @GarlicAnything who seems to be getting a bashing, I pay for my emails as hotmail / outlook was all over the place. I have to go through my new email provider for a code to be able to get into hotmail, for Heaven's sake. So I can easily understand her logic. A few pence is amazing value when it stops you wanting to throw tech out of the nearest window..

I didn't even know it was a thing. I use chrome and have never had a problem with ads getting in the way of anything, why is it so different? (Genuine question, I don't understand!)

No, nor me. The ads are quite small and in the middle of the page, they don't bother me. I definitely wouldn't pay to go ad free..

It's unique in terms of forefronting women's voices

It’s unique in allowing shitty people to rip women to pieces when they’re feeling vulnerable and to refuse to take some of these posts down, while happily deleting an entire thread about bald men because ‘it’s not in the spirit’.

So, unique, yes. It is that.

If this is your overall impression of MN, what do you come for? Is being bullied your secret vice, or are you into bullying women?

Coughed up? What a thoroughly disgusting expression.
As for MN, I use the app and it’s seamless! No ads except a banner for MN voices and zero pop ups! You can still edit, watch threads, bookmark posts and thank posts. Zero cost! No ad blocker needed

There’s a load of other forum that presumably that poster frequents

Why don't you use it for everything?

Because I don't like it's search engine and it brings up American results for everything.

I've got the free account and don't have any problems regardless of what browser I use.

DuckDuckGo browser - no ads on mumsnet.

Gonna have a look at Brave for YouTube now, as I've just started paying for no ads, as they were driving me insane.

Are the people using ad blockers visiting on their phones? I used to use Adblock when I accessed Mumsnet via a laptop but didn’t know it was possible on a phone? I use chrome on an iPhone.

Go into your phone connection settings, change your DNS to

DNS.adguard.com

No more adverts on any site you access via browser on your phone

'coughed up' is a thoroughly disgusting expression?

Are you visiting us from a Victorian finishing school?

Adblock stopped working for me with Mumsnet months ago, it did work for ages after they said it wouldn't so I would expect it to stop working at some point. Premium is definitely worth it for me, £3 or so per month is worth the amount I used it

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 22/08/2026 15:13

You don't need to pay - just download AdBlock.

Sorry I’m not au fait enough with it. Do I do that through the App Store or on MN?

Have you never heard that expression before? It means paying money for something and has been a normal expression for a long time. I’ve never heard of anyone thinking it was disgusting. Do you live abroad, it’s normal in the UK.

I agree with you, OP - I subscribed a few years ago out of solidarity for FWR and I've kept it up.
I think for a few quid a month it's worth it.

LorenzoCalzone · 22/08/2026 17:27

I think its fair enough for sites and channels to offer an ad free expereince for a price.

It does amaze me that people bother subscribing though.

I don't think it can be a big part or mumsnets business plan, doubt they'd outsell the adverts and sponsored posts.

For as long as Alzheimer’s exists… I will be donating to that charity what I can spare.

Not to… Mumsnet

You don't have to donate. Just put up with the adverts.

I thought the site blocked adblockers. If you try to use anything it just puts the cookie wall up again. And when you don't. It's really irritating. The ads aren't even targeted so why are they bothering being annoying for the sake of it.

Actually, it's turned into an ad for Adblocker! I'll ask them to match my £0 fee from Mumsnet.

No I bloody don’t live abroad! Born & raised in the UK for 42 years and have never heard it before.
