AIBU to think tatty lampost flags are imposing on communities?

To think.that people continuing to put up tatty flags on lamposts are imposing on communities?
There are people putting them up again near roads. They hang by a thread eventually causing a clear hazard. It looks disrespectful and costs money to make safe. And the intention looks less and less like they give a fig for anyone especially in diverse places.
Everywhere has a civic hub where flags are flown properly at the proper time.

It's probably that prevalent that you just don't see them any more.

I do feel sorry for people who don't go in for this sort of thing but who have to live amongst the types who do. It does just look shit and signifies that the area has more than its fair share of knuckle-dragging morons. Where I live is by no means well-to-do but for some reason it seems to have avoided this nonsense for which I am very grateful.

Where did I say I worship the flags! Lol! They make a dull roundabout look pretty thats it! Same as I enjoy looking at those wool creations people are making to decorate post boxes.

No, not your point. Your posts are quite balanced. @Velumental personally attacked me and called me a racist simply for saying the flags looked good and were well maintained in my town. Their post was subsequently removed.

There seems to be a number of posters trying to put a cross the point of view that people only object to England flags. I would suggest these people own their perspective assertively instead of implying it at people. Perhaps post something like ' I think the objections to flags and other stuff only applys to England flags and that makes people anti patriotic' '
... And of course the answer would be - most probably if it were just the occasional one stuck on a lamp post, as with some advertising or various slogans- no one would be bothered and graffiti would still be handled as graffiti.
Thousands of flags have been systematically ( and illegally) hung from lamp posts and they degrade over time and there's no plan for that. That's the issue. . A side issue is the motivations of those doing it and financing it.

Roundabouts are supposed to be dull. Plant some British wildflowers if you find it too boring. Imposing your “patriotism” on others is hardly comparable to someone putting a whimsical post box topper on to celebrate Easter. At least the crocheters remove their creations before they look tatty.

The abuse and vitriol directed at people putting flags up makes me want to put some up now.
Its a reaction to being gaslit and branded racist/xenophobic by the government and media because people have reservations and serious concerns about the rate and type of immigration and the negative effect its had.
No one wanted or voted for this, quite the opposite in fact.

The abuse (physical and verbal) has been directed at those attempting to remove flags illegally hung on lamp posts and telegraph poles.

The group behind the flagging mess are involved in fraud, assault and other criminality.

If people wanted to fly an England or UK flag, why did they wait to do so until encouraged by a group of rascist criminals? Surely they could have put a wee flagpole up in their garden and proudly raised a flag on high days and holidays?

I disagree that roundabouts are supposed to look dull! I love looking at ones with lovely flowers etc! I think there should be more features on roundabouts, like roundabout zoo from league of gentleman 😂

Can you give examples of abuse and vitriol? Bearing in mind they are breaking the law? People have been criticised and intimidated for taking them down it's true.

You're right. The tatty flags should be replaced with newer ones.

I thought that the flags had nothing to do with immigration and were simply about patriotic people expressing their love of England? At least that’s what we kept being told (quite aggressively) when we queried why people were doing it.

They wouldn’t want a roundabout zoo because a lot of the animals would be “foreign”.

We had a rabbit roundabout where I used to live. A family of wild rabbits had made their home there and kept breeding. It was delightful if a bit distracting. They disappeared eventually, I hope they were OK.

There are some roundabouts that have sculptures on them - it makes sense that the sculpture reflects the local area (and not foreign animals!) @BermudaRhombus . This one looks amazing

Yes. I would never move somewhere with flag-festooned lamp posts and painted roundabouts, however lovingly maintained. I am grateful to live in a bit of London where no flags or graffiti of any political persuasion are on display.

Our roundabouts used to have a statue of Our Lady on them. To keep motorists safe.☺️
