Anyone else sad summer is drawing to a close?

I’ve had a great summer - loads of memories with our daughter (3), playing in the garden daily and trips in the sun.

I already feel sad it’s coming to a close - I like the Christmas build up in December but apart from that I really struggle with the grey days and know I’ll be reminiscing loads for summer 😥

Yes I’m with you OP, am a total summer girl! I am probably less gloomy this year than I usually am when when there hasn’t been a good summer, but still can feel my mood dipping already. Hate the cold, hate the dark, hate plans being ruined by wind/rain (having to check forecasts constantly and carry spare layers and waterproofs for everyone 😐) Compared to the carefree summer days of drink and suncream and away we go. Don’t mind latter half of spring as it means summer is imminent but Sept - Feb can get in the bin as far as I’m concerned!

purpleme12 · 21/08/2026 23:17

I refuse to even think about it

mondaytosunday · 21/08/2026 23:18

No Autumn is my favourite time of year! Am sad that in a month my DD will be returning to uni and I’ll also be getting an operation (at least I hope so, not that I want an op but I need it). And also yes time is passing. But summer was just too hot and loved that I needed to sleep under my (only tog 4) duvet last night.

StrangerTwings · 21/08/2026 23:21

Yes! I'm usually an Autumn person, it was my favourite time of year, but this year I have loved the summer and hot weather. Its cool and dull here this week and I miss the heat! Not looking forward to Autumn/Winter this year..

EmeraldDreams73 · 21/08/2026 23:24

Yes! It's been right on the edge of what I could cope with and I'm well aware of all the fires and wildlife problems. But I'm very much solar powered and absolutely loathe the dark and rainy months on end. I've been part time through the holidays too which is SO brilliant, going back to full time in a couple of weeks once I've got dd2 off to uni and I'm so depressed at the thought of the grind and just the lack of light. And having to put my fit flops away again and wear socks.

havanesehope · 21/08/2026 23:30

This is the first time in my life I have looked forward to Autumn, I just couldn’t cope with the heat at all. I’m glad to be out and about again. Don’t like darker nights though.

TheBirdintheCave · 21/08/2026 23:31

whatisforteamum · 21/08/2026 21:38

Yes it was a brilliant summer even though I was at work alot. The morning is dark at 5 again so it's harder to get up.
I get SAD so apart from some new autumn clothes I do wish we had more summer left.
Maybe a month more in summer dresses.

We do! Summer isn’t over until Sept 21st or thereabouts :)

StylesSluttyShorts · 21/08/2026 23:33

I detest autumn and winter, and suffer horribly from SAD.
I'm dreading it.

Pedant61 · 21/08/2026 23:36

I don't like it either. It's the lack of light I dislike most, but I've loved having a proper summer this year.

Pelotonia · 21/08/2026 23:38

Totally agree, we’ve all had a fab time.

DrFaustina · 21/08/2026 23:50

Yes. In spite of teaching in mad temperatures and watching my plants die a slow, thirsty death, I've loved it. Breakfast in the garden most mornings. Evenings in the garden. Warmth. No joint pain. No coat.

I hate the dark. I hate the cold. The older I get, the more I loathe winter. Cosy- layers of clothes. No.
Dark- driving against blurry cat lights and high beam. No.
Cold= pain. No.
Dark = nothing to see. Boring. No.

HoldMyWine · 21/08/2026 23:57

Me. I love summer and this has been a fantastic one. I hate the winter months.

MaidOfSteel · 22/08/2026 00:03

We’ve had two hot, sunny days all summer in my bit of Scotland. And by hot I mean about 25C. We’ve had relentless cloud cover. And it has rained. A lot. We’ve even had our central heating on, in July & August.

I’m still desperately hoping summer will start.

Drivingmissrangey · 22/08/2026 00:10

I have a pretty amazing collection of boots and coats so looking forward to getting those out.

I like a pie and a proper roast dinner.

I like red wine on a cold evening.

I love running on a cold morning.

I love the heat of summer, but always feel there’s plenty to look forward to as the season change approaches.

sunshine47 · 22/08/2026 00:11

BitOutOfPractice · 21/08/2026 22:47

Hmm fuck “fostering an all weather attitude”. I will mourn the end of the summer. The dark. That’s what I hate. The dark.

I feel exactly the same as you. Im going to make the most of every single last second of the sunshine 🌞

Citygirlrurallife · 22/08/2026 00:14

DallasMajor · 21/08/2026 21:29

Yes, really sorry that the nights are drawing in and it's getting cold.

Not a trendy thing to say on MN, and it doesn't mean I think the droughts and the fires are worth it, or that I don't feel for everyone affected.

But I love the hot summers, the long evenings, and I struggle with winter.

This 100%

Gengha · 22/08/2026 00:17

I’m already sad the nights are getting darker earlier. I’m not bothered about sunshine and heat but I love daylight

tobee · 22/08/2026 00:23

I’ve been telling myself that I won’t mind autumn so much because we’ve had a proper summer, unlike those years when autumn begins and you think “hang on! I’m still waiting for summer to start” because it’s just been rainy and chilly all the time.

But it’s not working. Put my jeans on for the first time in ages and my bare feet are cold.

Jumpingthruhoops · 22/08/2026 00:32

Nope, not remotely. Bring on Autumn 🍂

redfairy · 22/08/2026 00:57

I love our changing seasons but I hate the gloom of Winter. I don't find Autumn quite so bad as it's fun with Halloween and the build up to Christmas. But Jan - March, oh my days - it's interminable and so grim.

Monty36 · 22/08/2026 03:08

I haven’t felt it was a normal summer so not really.
The summer was humid, very hot and intense. Almost angry .
It wasn’t pleasant, warm, sunny and breezy.

ChristmasCwtch · 22/08/2026 03:21

I love autumn and winter. I really enjoy being snuggly and love wearing jumpers.

Blankets, candles, log fires and then fairy lights for Christmas 🤩

My garden looks like frazzled straw, so I’ll be glad to see it under a layer of leaves or frost.

ThankYouNigel · 22/08/2026 03:27

YANBU- Summer has been incredible! Ours are 5 and 7, we love the break from the school run and demands to adopt more flexible timings with everything and being outdoors so much. We love day trips to National Trust properties, the beach, theme parks, etc. We love having our children home for an extended period of time, and only wish it was longer like other European countries.

Moaning5 · 21/08/2026 22:28

I am the biggest fan of summer - but autumn is beautiful ! The crisp air, the sparkling sunshine, the clear blue sky, the trees are another level of gorgeousness.

Dont forget about lovely autumn !

Agree but Autumn is so short usually! Winter is about 5 months long!

moonraker0 · 22/08/2026 05:03

Absolutely hate autumn and winter. Everything is dark, depressing, wet and cold. I miss seeing people out and about, everyone is more sociable in the summer and it feels like hibernation time when it ends. I have two holidays booked over winter to get some sun but I’ll be looking forward to the clocks changing in March and that feeling of summer being on the way.
