My step daughter lied about having cancer

mydaughterisademon · Today 15:49

And I really don’t understand why, she’s 20! She kept this lie up for 6 months, but only to one side of the family.

I was suspicious when I first heard about it as she had always been a liar, such as accusing people of seriously assaulting her, or the neighbour being a pervert.

None of the details she said added up, we gave her a lot of money as she was ‘too sick to work’.

The odd thing is, her mother is exactly the same, and made up having a child! Used to make up lies about my husband and have him arrested.

Initially my husband’s family didn’t believe me and were quite nasty to me. Until my husband went to his families house and called her grandmother, who she lives with and she advised she’s never had cancer.

She also claimed miscarriage and sepsis last month, on top of the the cancer.

what the hell is wrong with her? Me and my husband can’t get our head around it.

Obtaining money by deception and claiming to have cancer so people back off from holding you accountable. Rings a bell- oh yes, the builder who defrauded my mum and left a trail of devastation behind. He ended up in prison years down the line, after scamming his elderly neighbour out of his life savings. It’s a very bad start and shows a potentially psychopathic personality. Tread very carefully with her. If it were me, trust would be gone forever.

It’s not fraud though ? He willingly paid it. She lied but not fraud as in a scammer.

Sorry but how else would you define "fraud" other than lying to get something? It is the definition of fraud!

There was a big story in the papers round here not long ago of a school teacher lying about having cancer, and accepting donations from people. She went to prison. It is fraud. It is illegal.

Obtaining money by deception is a crime under the Fraud Act 2006. So yes she can be prosecuted by the police

Edited

You’re right. Apologies.

TheGander · Today 16:42

It’s always cancer isn’t it?

I disagree its fraud the reason he paid was because she deliberately lied about having cancer and used it to get money, its fraud.

Munchausens. I was in a group chat with someone who faked being in a coma from COVID. She was caught out when she started posting as "her husband" with the same grammar mistakes and someone reversed google-image searched the photo of her hotel room.

Being 20 would not mean she couldn't have cancer (sadly, it's more common than you think, and more and more younger people are being diagnosed).

Is there any possibility it was a maybe, and miscommunicated? As in I had gynae issues and was told it could be X, and they'd be testing the tissue for cancer-could this have been the case? Though with the rest of what she's said, I guess that is unlikely, and agree with others to keep your distance from her.

Don't tie yourself in knot's. Some people are just evil and no excuse washes any of their nastiness away.

I doubt the police will action this, it will be a criminal case.

I can’t get my head round you reporting her to the police if you going to tell her family, why didn’t your husband. You clearly hate her and that’s fine. But it’s for her father to deal with

I'm assuming that OP and her husband are a team and have taken these steps together.

HollyhocksandPeons · Today 16:47

What is wrong with her? Her father abandoned her to live with her liar mother and shacked up with you. That is what is wrong with her. Your 'husband' is wrong with her. You know that before he was your husband, he was her father?

mydaughterisademon · Today 16:47

Firstly, I didn’t hate her. Her father earns nowhere near as much as me, so essentially it was my money she’s had, which if she had cancer, a miscarriage and sepsis, I would have happily given her. As we did.

I believe this is fraud by misrepresention. But I’ve tonight issued a civil claim against her too.

I of course know children and young adults get cancer, hence why we handed over the money. We wanted to support anyway we could. But without a doubt, confirmed, she was lying

Her upbringing wasn’t great, but neither was mine. I wouldn’t dream of doing this! I’m too honest!

I don’t think this would meet the threshold for munchausen’s. She would have needed to fake symptoms, convince health care professionals, go down the treatment route etc for it to be that. Just saying it isn’t enough.

Sartre · Today 16:48

A girl DH went to school with did this. She was sad her boyfriend had broken up with her so decided to tell everyone she had cancer. She went as far as creating an NHS appointment letter which is how they caught her out in the end, someone said the paper was too nice to be NHS! They’d set up a fundraiser for her and all sorts. I have absolutely no idea what sort of mental illness would cause this but it’s clearly quite serious.

What the hell! Who said he abandoned her! Why is that assumed!

Anendlessseriesofunfortunateevents · Today 16:50

If she can lie about this, what else will she lie about? If I was her dad I'd be quite scared to find out she can take lies to this level. Claiming to have cancer and extorting thousands from someone who loves her. It's quite scary!

ShutupLwren · Today 16:51

I have known liars like this who are adults. Absolute fantasists and they really destroy the lives of those around them. I’d be very wary of anything she says.

Is it not the same motivation though?

Do you think she'd be willing to have therapy?

Of course it’s the man’s fault…the man haters on here are getting worse

That’s the difference between fraud and theft. He was defrauded because she lied.

I’m not paying a penny more for her! As I said, it’ll will be me the bill lands with. I’m furious

Is it not the same motivation though?

Not quite. In Munchausens the motivation is getting medical attention, sometimes for years on end. In the SDs case ( and in many scammers’ cases like my mums builder above) the motivation is getting away with a different act of deception ( fraud/ poor workmanship etc) by disarming people by making them believe that they are ill.

BillieWiper · Today 16:58

Even though you thought she was lying you gave her lots of money? What high salaried job did she have at 20 that sacked her off when she said she had cancer?

She must be a fantasist and it's some kind of personality disorder or something isn't it?

She'll never be believed again so she best hope nothing bad really happens!

deadbobaplace · Today 17:00

There is really no point trying to diagnose this girl over the internet, or blame DH for being young and stupid enough to conceive a child with a crazy person. She's just another scammer. Podcasts are full of them.

Good luck trying to get the money back as she will have already spent it and will be looking for her next mark.

cavalier · Today 17:05

Not normal behaviour this lady needs some sort of therapy surely ?

This ^

If he authorised the payments his card company won't treat it as "fraud".
