AIBU to think I may have been forgotten / misjudged a friendship when it took one of my (supposed) closest friends over a week to let me know she was ok and baby had arrived safely?

Trying to keep this brief. Will probably fail, sorry. Scene-setting... Old school friend, close but not in each other's pockets (neither of us are really like that), live a long way from each other, very busy lives with family / social lives / work (both in very full-on jobs), meet up a couple of times a year, go through phases with messaging - can be a couple of months between then have a spell of conversation in which we catch up on life then things go quiet again, mainly we talk about the very important and private stuff that we've both acknowledged we wouldn't really discuss with other people. We've both spoken about how things work, in that regard, and said it suits us - the gaps are not a reflection of the other being unimportant, neither of us are needy and we both just understand each other's lives.

Fast forward... Friend went through IVF, bless her, and her DH works away, all over the world (she does, too). Some appointments she went to by herself and I was the person she called while she was waiting to be seen at those appointments. Pregnancy was relatively ok for her. Second child. She had a CS with first, wanted VBAC with second. We had conversations about it ahead of the birth - both on the same page with wanting a VBAC second time around, both also very pragmatic people (I had an emergency CS with my first but had wanted a water birth - have been advised against VBAC in future). She went overdue but was almost certainly going into hospital for an induction and if baby not been born naturally by X date then it was going to be a CS - some concerns started to crop up about her health and baby's health around her due date.

We messaged on or the day before she was likely going in (because I'd got in touch to find out how an appointment a few days earlier went) but I didn't know if / when she'd actually gone into hospital. I didn't then hear anything at all. Childbirth is a busy time! A week passed (and we were a good few days beyond the final date baby could have been born) so I dropped her a message just to see how she was getting on. No response. A few days later (yesterday) dropped her another message just to say I was thinking of her. Got an immediate response to say that she'd been home a few days, had a busy week, baby girl was born a week earlier, and she was doing ok after a bit of a rough ride.

I totally get that having a baby is utterly crazy and the early days are like being in the trenches. I've been there - very rough surgery, very unsettled baby, having absolutely zero clue how to navigate the new order. I also tried to strike a balance between being there / supportive / interested / consistent but not oppressive or demanding (that's obviously subjective but I think, based on our relationship, I gauged it right). I was concerned about my friend because of the things that started to indicate there may be a problem prior to the birth.

I just have this feeling that I was forgotten in the list of people to inform about her being safe and baby girl being born. Whilst she tells me what an important friend I am, I struggle to get past "actions speak louder than words".

I'm genuinely not an overbearing person. It's something I check with people because I hate others who are overbearing! I am the person who can always be relied on though (by friends or even acquaintances, it transpires) - I think it's the consistency 🤷🏼‍♀️ On the one hand, I am worried that I've expected too much of my friend. On the other hand, I am concerned I have misjudged the friendship and I'm perhaps not as important to her as I had thought.

She has just had a baby !!!!
It's not about YOU.

This, I went into labour at work at 35 weeks, remember stress calling parents to ask if they’d pick up oldest from school as dh and I hurtled off to maternity, making sure everyone was updated was something wanted to do, but when newborn was needing extra care, am sure missed some people on the info list, wasn’t malicious or meant to be hurtful, but me and dh were absolute bags of mess and nerves

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 21/08/2026 20:37

I’m going against the grain here and actually i don’t know why she didn’t message saying all ok. Baby here. That’s all that was needed. Understand why you’d be worried.

NancyThompson · 21/08/2026 20:43

OP I actually think you sound like a lovely friend. You're sanity-checking here, not giving your friend a hard time.

ScartlettSole · 21/08/2026 22:22

My youngest was born quite poorly, other than immediately family I told no one because we genuinely didn't know if they would be OK. I had her already past my due date and I felt bloody horrible at ignoring well meaning messages from friends. To be honest even my mum, who was also worried but also did my brain in as only me and Dad allowed at first. Please don't think it as being unimportant, she's just realising how bloody important baby is. You are clearly a good friend. Enjoy being an honoury aunt!

Bunny65 · 21/08/2026 22:54

If you message a group you know the word will get around - as it did to you - and maybe that's all she could manage at the time - or maybe she meant to message more people individually and then never had the chance. I'm sure she's been overwhelmed and only has so much headspace. I wouldn't take it personally. She must be exhausted.

Laura95167 · 21/08/2026 22:59

Wow that escalated quickly until it was all about you 🤣

OP youre a little over bearing, and likely werent your friends priority last week. Stop overthinking

Jokes aside reread your OP, you mention her wanting a VBAC and detour your story to your own experience of wanting a water birth. You pat yourself on the back "pragmatic people" "reliable" think you always get the balance right.

Its all about your good qualities and perfect approach and just all about you. This wasnt, for a few days you may have been forgotten. But it isnt terrible and doesnt mean she doesn't love you

Blades2 · 22/08/2026 01:41

You don’t have children do you op.
My sister let those who were not immediate family know, while I recovered and went into life with a tiny human to try and navigate.

Kokonimater · 22/08/2026 02:13

Try to just let it go.
stop overthinking it.
it doesn’t really matter.

Filoparcels017 · 22/08/2026 02:23

Yes it is an inappropriate time to question your friendship.

She told you that she had had a tough time. Isn’t that explanation enough?

Friendship = giving someone the benefit of the doubt and trusting that their intentions towards you are good and that they are doing the best they can.

Maybe you are one of the few people she doesn’t have to worry about offending not being on it with rather than being overlooked

IamnotSethRogan · 22/08/2026 05:58

I have a best friend I've known since I was about 6. We're very much in constant communication pretty much most days and talk about everything.

She didn't really communicate with me for a good few days after her baby was born.

Different people process things differently.

I never understand this idea that we should be overly sympathetic or overly joyful because someone went through IVF.

Ahh, how lovely for you that you’ve never needed to go through it.

And I’m sad for you that you’ve never felt the joy of having a baby after years of struggles. it’s quite something else.

Aim4Lesscortisol · 22/08/2026 06:13

What is her partner like ? Sometimes partners react weirdly after a baby arrives and that might be something she hasnt got the mental strength to tell you but is a lot to handle

I'm not looking for offence - that's not how my mind works! One of my closest relatives who work with people with additional needs thinks I'm autistic. No idea whether or not they're right. I'm just pragmatic and literal so me trying to figure this out isn't me being needy.

This is you being needy.

Lillers · 22/08/2026 06:58

One of my best friends was in hospital for complications when her baby was due. I got a message saying that things had taken a turn and she was being taken for an EMCS, and then I heard nothing - radio silence - for over a week. I was really worried, but also didn’t want to hassle her and didn’t want to make her feel like she needed to respond if something had gone badly wrong. I was also expecting my first baby at the time and was really worried - I sent one short “checking in” message but didn’t go beyond that.

Anyway long story short, she was fine, baby was fine, she was just completely overwhelmed by everything and hadn’t got round to individual messages yet. I completely understood - it was never a reflection on our friendship, but only on her state of mind at the time.

We’re still as close now and our little ones still play together - although when I had mine I made sure I messaged people a bit more promptly so they wouldn’t worry about me the way I’d worried about her!

Missey85 · 22/08/2026 07:26

It's only been a week I doubt she's called anyone since baby came I imagine she's a little busy atm 😂 so sorry your feelings are hurt it's not about you she's having family time ❤️

The last baby my friend had she didn't call anybody we found out from her husband 😊 he'd announced her name on Facebook 😂 imagine the time it would take her friend to call everyone individually

It sounds like OP thinks she's the centre of everyone s Universe 😂 after giving birth phoning people would be the last thing on my mind ❤️

I think the group of school friends got "the message" after a day or two
You don’t know that she messaged them, you only think she did. You’re overthinking based on a guess.
Her other friends might have messaged her husband/mum/sibling if they didn’t want to bother her. One of them living locally to her could have bumped into a family member and found out that way, then updated the others. Maybe they just didn’t wait an entire week to send a “thinking of you” message, caught her at a good moment, and got an update in response.

Instead of trying to work out where you stand in some imagined friendship hierarchy, congratulating yourself on being pragmatic and striking the right balance, suggesting you’re better than her other friends (because you’d have driven six hours in the middle of the night and “know none of her other friends would have done that”)…try looking at it from your friend’s point of view.
She’d told you there were some concerns about her and baby, she’d told you when she’d be induced if she hadn’t already gone into labour by then…and you didn’t even send a quick message to see if she was okay for an ENTIRE WEEK after that date. I know you’re choosing to see this as not being overbearing, but from her perspective it could look like you simply didn’t care.

winnieanddaisy · 22/08/2026 09:17

I think I know how you feel. My best friend since before we started school was 7 months pregnant when I went to live abroad with my army husband. We were both 19. This was the early 70s and phone calls were not possible as neither of us had access to a phone. I wrote to her instead but she didn’t write back.
This didn’t upset me as I I wasn’t working so had plenty of time but my friend obviously had things going on . After her due date I asked if everything had gone well and if she and baby were ok , but when she didn’t reply back I started to worry. I didn’t carry on writing because I didn’t want to upset her if she had lost the baby or something .
I came home from abroad when her baby would be four months old and I was 7 months pregnant, and the first thing I did was to get my brother to drive me to her flat. I hadn’t even seen my parents who were both at work!
She and the baby were absolutely fine. I was just relieved that they were.
All I’m trying to say is that having babies is stressful and give her some slack as I’m sure she didn’t mean to ignore you , she just had other things going on .

I think your feelings are understandable but hang in there, be there for your friend. She may have been through a really rough time, is struggling and things may get harder for her and she may find it hard to say/admit. Going from 1 to 2 is a lot also. If you find she's moving away and on with life over the coming year then that's a different situation and you may want to step back, but give her grace at this time and the coming months.

I don't think YABU, you mentioned something like you seem to be the one that makes all of the effort. I'd step back a bit. I no longer contact people if they do not make the effort with me. I think some of the comments on here are a bit aggressive towards you. Your friend could have sent you a quick text to inform you baby had arrived. I would focus on making new friendships. Stay friends with your friend if that's what you want but I wouldn't be so readily available for her x x

I am sure that she didn’t neglect your being told on purpose. I am sure that she was just recovering from the birth and trying to cope with a new baby . The last thing on her mind was to inform everyone.i would not take it to heart . She can definitely be excused in this situation.
