Reform want to cut PIP

1000 replies

Daygloboo · 16/08/2026 09:15

Reform want to cut benefits for disabled people. They want businesses to pay more towards sickness etc. I find it repulsive that they want to do this. When will people understand that they are a bunch of self interested sharks who want to make a stack of dosh for themselves while in govt and that they font give a damn about anyone in need. Why cant the most vulnerable ppl who vote for them see thus. It's astonishing. It's ac joke. I eish ppl who get what Reform.iscreally about and how it manipulates would make sn extra effort to tslk to.ppl who dont seem to get it.

Reform will need to cut benefits massively. How else are they going to force people to do the jobs that we currently expect immigrants to do?

But pip is an in-work benefit. I know quite a few people who get it - they are blind or completely deaf - and they all have full-time jobs.

They need to start employing more fraud investigators on surveillance. Weed out all the ones who come out on crutches, get jnto their taxpayer funded motor, park up in the next town and go and do park run

"If they would rather die... they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."

It does seem ironic given the profile of reform voters. Not sure it’s the answer but I agree PIP has issues. I’ve always found it odd the monetary award has no connection to the actual extra costs you might incur or the cost implications of your particular needs. Hence it becomes part of a family’s general income. But then I acknowledge that it would be administratively impractical to have more different rates/require more details of how it’s spent.

The family’s general income may well be a direct cost of disability. When my DC were younger I was severely limited in the work I could do due directly to the impact of disabilities. Between hospital appointments, meetings with school, kids needing to come out of school at odd times, severe restrictions on appropriate after school care I couldn’t work anywhere near full time. My salary was much reduced - believe me DLA didn’t touch the sides.

Can you describe what most disabled means?

Also Reform want introduce an direct insurance based health care to replace the NHS.

What are your thoughts on the £5 million donation to Farage?

NHS also requires a review. We can no longer be sentimental or nostalgic about it. Having over the last few years been in the unfortunate position of seeing it close up on the back of health issues with family and friends, it’s totally apparent that it’s no longer fit for purpose. It really is in a dire situation. We may have to consider at least partly privatising the NHS. When people start to expect the norm to be 8 hours waiting in A&E, having to wait in a telephone queue of 40 just to get a GP appointment, waiting months and years to get an operation, and facing 3 year waiting lists to get an appointment with a NHS dentist, then we have to start throwing sentiment out the window.

I fucking hate the benefit bashing.
I have an autistic son who chews and rips through bedding and clothes. He smears. He can’t do any personal hygiene. He attacks me, hurts himself. He attends Sen school and can seem fine all day and walk through the door and scream at me whilst pulling my hair and trying to bite me because someone may have triggered him earlier that day.
He would rather starve than not eat his safe food. Sometimes it’s a branded cereal or particular chicken nugget. The iPad regulates him, but can be smashed into pieces despite the fancy case the blink of an eye.
He absconds. He is a danger to the public due to his violence or his inability to acknowledge safety so he could cause an accident. He will headbutt the pavement if overwhelmed. I have to do more washing because of his incontinence than any mum I know. I have to buy bedding and towels (all bedding is vinted bundles because he shreds it) constantly. He has autism, adhd and learning disabilities.
Over the last few years people I was friends with seem jealous almost because he gets DLA (580 a month) and I get Carers Allowance (87 per week) I haven’t slept for years despite him having melatonin.
I had to leave a job I loved because I was constantly having to collect him from school. I love my son and he makes me immeasurably happy, but I’d rather give you my 87 quid and his 580 a month and have a NT version of the same child and return to working. My job was NMW so nothing massively different money wise for me with my wages compared to my UC if I’m honest but I miss feeling like I had use to society. I cared for the elderly and was really good at it. I used to have people to talk to, colleagues, my lovely residents and their families. Now it’s reading Mumsnet hearing about how my son and I are a burden on society.
I used to care for a wonderful group of elder adults who had autism (before it was diagnosed, back then it was just learning disabilities and then their diagnosis such as Down’s syndrome etc) and people would do lovely things, if we were out in the local pub for a meal, often a nice customer would send over soft drinks for the support staff or before leaving pay off puddings for the people we supported. Now I get told from other SEN mums that their kids are being called arseholes because their sunflower lanyards are on display.

I hate the world I brought my child into. People are jealous of him over less than 1k a month and had he been born without disability, we’d be better off anyway.

@charliehungerford fuck me, your bar for a "nice life" is pretty low if you think a drug and alcohol addicted stroke victim who is dependent on state benefits is living the high life.

Of course! I forgot that part.

Don’t forget his free PIP car which is a BMW. Even though you can’t get BMWs on motability! 😂

happybug1234 · 16/08/2026 10:32

This is exactly the thing I want to hear from a mainstream government. Cutting benefits is a key issue for me. I am sick of working my ass off for not much return. Meanwhile people claim tax free PIP are swanning around with a better lifestyle than us.

we went on holiday abroad recently and met a family with 3 kids, we got talking to them, they were in low wage occupations so wondered how they could afford the holiday, they then told us that all 3 kids had autism, so the PIP was paying for it no doubt.

Yes, people always share their financial details with random fellow holiday makers who ask. That is just one of the holes in this tale.

probablyamunreasonable · 16/08/2026 10:46

ThePieceHall · 16/08/2026 10:39

Kids don’t get PIP. Also, my teenager is blind and has a rare autoimmune disease that requires weekly chemotherapy. She would like a job, like her peers, but which cafe would hire a blind waitress or which shop a cashier who can’t see the banknotes or the contactless device?

Children get Disability Living Allowance which is the children’s version of PIP (I think it used to be called DLA for adults too, but it was replaced by PIP).

Sometimes people get DLA as a child but can’t get PIP as an adult for the same condition. A family member of mine received DLA as a child for Type 1 diabetes but doesn’t get PIP as an adult, for example.

Happyjoe · 16/08/2026 10:46

They've hinted at cutting benefits before. There's lots of unpleasant policies for people who are poorly, low income, different nationalities and women.

People simply don't care. It's all about the boats innit!

borborygmus1 · 16/08/2026 10:47

I've just cut my hours as I was paying the equivalent of 66% tax for the money earned in the child benefit payment range when pension/NI/child benefit loss and tax are factored in

Literally no point me earning what I am capable of earning when 2/3rds of it just disappears.

I don't begrudge paying benefits for people who are incapable of work through disability or serious ill health. Benefits payments should be to support people with genuine need, not anxious people/people with low level disability who lose all incentive to improve their situation /find work when they are subsidised by the state. Also we should be reducing benefits payments for parents. If you can't afford to feed/clothe your child through work, don't have them. Don't assume someone else will want to spend 45 years of their life working while receiving 29 years worth of pay from that work all to fund you existing.

The number of claimants has shot up hugely. It is unaffordable and the criteria for claiming needs to be massively revised with a huge loss in eligibility.

People who earn well are fed up of being treated as cash cows. There's no way in hell I would continue working for 2/3rds of my money to be taken away and spent on someone else's family. Just not worth it any more. I will return to full time work when the tax system makes sense.

If we stopped funding all the scroungers that are coming over the Channel we might have some spare cash to spend on our own people.

The Channel Crossing Crisis has placed an enormous burden on the asylum system. In May 2025, the National Audit Office produced a report suggesting that the asylum system is likely to cost over £15bn over ten years.

Edited

Better to stop funding grifters like Farage,Tice, and Jenrick, I'm sure they've got some more billionaire mates who can spare a few million.

That is entirely your base assumption that PIP was paying for the holiday. If these 'kids' were under 16, then it would not have been PIP anyway, as they would be too young to claim it. But don't let that stop you from spreading tattle, which you have no real knowledge of.

Loads are just having their awards automatically extended currently.

The truth of this is that some reviews, at DWP discretion have been pushed back to 4 years. It's an administration/staffing problem caused by cost cutting - something Reform are promising more of.

DWP didn't consider my brother's case one needing their discretion. We're going through the appeal process now.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 16/08/2026 10:49

This links EXACTLY to working class / underclass Americans who voted for Trump. He's cut the benefits many, many of them rely on.

3 x DLA probably is the equivalent of a good full time wage.

Rowgtfc72 · 16/08/2026 10:50

I have two friends who claim Pip, neither have worked a day in their lives, have openly said they dont intend to ever work and go about their everyday lives, gym, holidays, meals out etc.
I also work with people whose illnesses are not severe enough to claim Pip, but their illnesses impact greatly their everyday lives, they come to work in pain and leave in pain.

There has to be some sort of reform - I'm not looking at you Mr Farage - but what we have now is unfair and unsustainable.

But that's not what PIP is supposed to be for.

It's supposed to be for additional costs directly resulting from a disability. Not an income top up.

That's why it isn't means tested.

No it does not. The family that you supposedly met on holiday, did not tell you how they afforded it. You have jumped to the conclusion that PIP paid for it, when you don't know anything about that, or DLA, from the sound of things. Why have you assumed that?

No one is targeting or bashing those genuinely in need. Wouldn’t you rather see those milking the system weeded out so that genuine claimants like yourself can get more help? Or don’t you really care that there are people abusing the system? There aren’t enough Fraud investigators looking into this abuse. Not to sound boring and predictable, but my mother has a next door neighbour, nice guy, and who gets PIP for a back condition, and who helped another neighbour carry in a washing machine last week. Madness…..
