Reform want to cut PIP

1000 replies

Daygloboo · 16/08/2026 09:15

Reform want to cut benefits for disabled people. They want businesses to pay more towards sickness etc. I find it repulsive that they want to do this. When will people understand that they are a bunch of self interested sharks who want to make a stack of dosh for themselves while in govt and that they font give a damn about anyone in need. Why cant the most vulnerable ppl who vote for them see thus. It's astonishing. It's ac joke. I eish ppl who get what Reform.iscreally about and how it manipulates would make sn extra effort to tslk to.ppl who dont seem to get it.

The trouble is, if the government don’t deal with illegal immigration properly then people will vote reform regardless. That’s such a strong topic at the moment that it seems to trump most other issues.
It amuses me that the only reason Andy Burnham is now PM is because Reform took so many local councils. The only reason this happened is because people were sending a message to the government about the illegal immigration thing. Yet, he still isn’t addressing it. So yes, I believe people will vote Reform, and everything that goes with it, purely because Reform say they’ll stop the boats. If you have a government that aren’t listening to its people, then radical groups come to power. It’s always been the same throughout history

Burnham hasn't been PM for a month yet, give him a chance!

LoremIpsumCici · 16/08/2026 11:48

@Ted27
Me too. Been on PIP since 2016 for numerous chronic physical conditions that are only going to get worse. I just got back from my holiday. Paid for from my wages. Although, I guess one could try and say that PIP paid the extra bag fee of £70 on Ryanair so I could take my medical supplies.

Let's face it, no matter who the Prime Minister is, (or what he/she is doing,) some people just love to whinge.

It’s not “extra income”, my earning capacity was reduced by two thirds as a result of caring for my disabled kids. I calculate I lost well over £100k during the time my capacity for work was reduced. What you’re proposing would mean that I continue to work full time and have the state provide the care needed, because without DLA I couldn’t have covered the costs of my DCs disabilities. The cost of state provided care would be significantly higher than the DLA awarded.

That’s life though. Thats just what happens. Why should the government compensate you for unfortunate things that happen in your life?

moto748e · 16/08/2026 11:50

I think most political parties would like to cut PIP if they thought they could, it's massive expense, and there are way too many people not in work.

Obviously they won’t stop the boats either because they have no real plan to stop them. But I agree with the rest

There are over twice as many people looking for jobs than there are vacancies.

Have you any proposals into getting them back to work?

Because if it didn't, it could/would end up having to pay a lot more to provide the care needed while one or both parents are at work...

These threads make me so angry. I am a single adopter of two children, both of whom have complex disabilities, all related to their in utero exposure to drugs and alcohol. As a former professional, I can no longer work because my days are filled with battling for non-existent children’s services. My elder daughter gets maximum PIP as she is blind due to her optic nerves being irreversibly damaged by drugs and alcohol when she was in the womb. My younger daughter would qualify for DLA, if I could ever summon up the resilience and energy to fill in the War & Peace-style form. Which I can’t as I am practically broken as a human being. I may not currently be a net contributor but I can reassure everyone that I am probably saving the state at least £700K a year in children’s care home fees. This is really how much they cost as the sector has been infiltrated by mainly Dubai and offshore-based private investment funds. They set their astronomical fees and local authorities have no choice but to pay. Also, my blind/PIP teen has applied for dozens of seasonal/cafe/shop jobs but her main disability is apparently too much for employers to consider. If things continue as people here would seem to want them to, I imagine that she’ll end up in a workhouse after I’m gone.

DiscoRice · 16/08/2026 11:38

They are different benefits, with different criteria.

I know that but if a person claims PIP for a disability they are already receiving help for disability so shouldn't get health element of UC for the same disability.

Howlerhog · 16/08/2026 11:49

Because that is how the system works in this country. There are plenty of other countries you could live in if you'd prefer to see the poor and vulnerable begging in the gutter.

Jellycatspyjamas · 16/08/2026 11:53

The government doesn’t need to compensate me, nor did it even come close to filling that gap. The government does need to ensure families caring for disabled children can do so, and if that means DLA contributes to the household pot then so be it. Absolutely no point in me paying for educational support for my DC if I then can’t heat the house or pay the mortgage.

caringcarer · 16/08/2026 11:53

DiscoRice · 16/08/2026 11:42

The government were (and still are) proposing that only people on PIP could get the health element of UC.
Which is the total opposite of what you are suggesting.

I know that but thought we were discussing Reform plans for PIP and UC not this Labour government.

I know..So what happens when they cut benefits and there are no jobs ...oh.i know...people starve or freeze. Oh well, that's all right then..

The majority of Labour seats at risk from Reform have the highest rates of people living on disability benefits.

www.politicshome.com/news/article/labour-reform-battleground-seats-higher-rates-people-relying-disability-benefits

this is possibly because they work hard and qualify for their benefits and get angry when they perceive others jumping on the bandwagon because it's an easy way to qualify for a lifetime of ease paid for by others.

Your attitude is the problem. Lots of people started perceiving benefits as a mechanism to level the field. Someone who can’t earn should enjoy the same lifestyle (including holidays) as the one who earns. That would be nice, but Thats actually Soviet Union dream and it’s completely unaffordable. Benefits are a safety net, not a levelling mechanism. All other pipe dreams will lead to country becoming bankrupt and no benefits for anyone at all (like it happened in Soviet Union)

I am now in Poland. The unemployed people here clean up the streets every morning. If they don't do it, they lose their status, the benefit and the insurance (free healthcare access). They have their equivalent of PIP but it's never awarded over the phone. You've got to go through some kind of face-to-face commission interview, it's quite scary, I guess. I don't think it's possible here to get anything on anxiety/mental health, people here laugh out loud and point to their heads when I mentioned this.

Mental health conditions range from very mild anxiety which affects most people to severe and eduring mental illness such as schizophrenia
Shizo affective disorer
Bipolar mood sisorder
All of which csn be very disabling

Again, the benefits are not the same.
UC is to cover everyday living costs. PIP is to cover the extras costs of being disabled.
What you are proposing would mean someone on £30pw PIP only get the basic £400pm to live on.
Could you live on that?

You dont need to visit a third world country to know what one is.....

Third world countries (not even “third world” really) don’t have half of the social welfare support in the UK has. There’s no gravy train to climb on.

Difference being pension is paid to those entitled to it. They cant lie about their age. And how else do you expect an 80 year to earn money when theyre too old and incapable? Old age affects us all and renders all of us incapable of physical or mental work at some point. And im not going to provide figures to you of who claims PIP if on a high income. Some will claim. Some wont. The fact is that its availabe to all regardless of income or savings.

I'm not saying they should. It's the logic of your argument not mine.

I'd be amazed if any high earners claim PIP. Why would they bother?

You know that it's around 1.4% of PIP claims are fraudulent? And the majority of those are where claimants didn't report improvement in their condition which was partially error rather than intent. It's gone up from 0.4% last year.

Why PIP is being singled out I just don't know.

Why don't we look at the billions fraudulently claimed on contracts awarded to dodgy millionaires during the pandemic. £10.9 billion.

Look over here at these poor people....don't look over there at our dodgy mates...say the right wing. FFS.

That should be tackled through disability payments, not PIP

Anxiety and ADHD should not have PIP

Sirry. But you're talking bollocka. Most ppl on PIP have hard lives. I suggest you do some extensive hands on research before you start making false assertions. I have extensive ecperience in this firld and I absolutely know what I'm talking sbout.
