AIBU to think the PM is ignoring the asylum issue?

I’m firmly working class, and I don’t believe that what we need is to spread the asylum seekers around more. The reason I’m annoyed is not because I don’t want them housed by the middle class, but because I think it’s completely ignoring the problem. I think we need secure detention centres whilst the country either approves the application or sends them off home. These will be safe, food provided, clothes, play areas for the children. The accommodation will have the basics like temporary housing does but they can’t leave until application approved or sent home. But they can’t leave and roam UK unless their application is accepted. Anyone who is violent etc and makes it not safe will automatically be sent home.
I liked this prime minister as I thought he had both feet on the ground, but it seems not….!
If he admits it’s not fair only working class has to deal with it, then surely, he admits it’s a problem and he’s not actually addressing it?

YANBU = PM ignoring actual issue
YABU = Issue is that only working class have to deal with them

Agreed, and I havent waded through the rest of the thread yet but Im amazed at the 'get outs' that he seems to have been given here whereas people were all over Starmer within weeks of him becoming PM (voted in I might add) and declaring him a failure already because he hadnt sorted out the whole country already.

Starmer was not “voted in”. We do not have a presidential system. He was the leader of the party that gained most MPs so became PM.

Yellowshirt · 16/08/2026 10:02

Nigel Farage will be the next PM because he is promoting strict borders.
Nothing can be fixed in this country until asylum seekers are sent home. Every issue from government debt, houses and NHS waiting lists can't be fixed until we have a smaller population and less pressure on services.
We need a workers strike so this government stops wasting our taxes or calls a general election.

He’s been prime minister for 3 weeks. Daft.

He’s spoken about other things a fair bit, why not this?

Any solution to the asylum issue is going to be very, very expensive.

Not half as expensive as the current modus operandi of saying “if you can reach British soil we’ll take care of you from that point on”

Yes, some posters don't seem to understand the system.

Australia manages this situation very well but when it’s suggested to do the same here it’s “against human rights!”

What do you think would be the effect of Reform’s Operation Fortress on government debt, houses and NHS waiting lists? We are especially vulnerable on debt because we have so much of it and because of the terms on which we’ve borrowed. We absolutely cannot, under any circumstances, be kicking off trade wars.

Booboobagins · 16/08/2026 10:08

Have no doubt he is looking into it. Give him time to get to tell us what his plans are to deal with this thorny issue once he has properly reviewed the options. He is measured so will not want to go at this half cocked.

Their system works, our stumbling block for the same is the ECHR which they don’t have to contend with. The court system is enclosed and only for them.

They still top human rights tables though, it can be done.

Interesting though to see people extolling the virtues of the immigration policies of certain EU member states. I’m sure someone said we could only get control of our borders if we left the EU. Perhaps I misheard.

The hilarity of a Reform supporter calling Any Burnham 'unelected' 🤣🤣🤣

Of Reform's eight MPs, FIVE were actually elected for the Tories and then defected to Reform!

The difference is the MPs who moved from Conservative to Labour are not running the country and when there is another General Election the voters will decide if they still want them as their MP. Andy Burnham instigated a coup against Starmer what a bigot he is and his fellow Labour back stabbing MPs what a lovely bunch they are (not) he was only an MP for 2 minutes then was crowned by his cronies who had been plotting for years to get him there.

Yes so voted in, people wanted him as PM because he was the leader of the party they voted for. Dont be disingenuous.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 16/08/2026 10:13

It’ll help relieve the problem, long term. No one cares when working class areas are overrun. They care when it impacts the professionals who have new neighbours, until then nothing will change.

It’s either a brilliant idea to force a public reaction or he is genuinely trying to spread out the masses.
Either way it has opened up a lot of eyes to the problem.

A link to the Reform UK party policies isn’t explaining MissJoGrant’s question.

I really hope you posting that link was sarcasm.

She can read can't she. If not she can look at the Reform Party videos on Youtube 🙂

I can’t see Labour emulating Poland anytime soon and they have tried to sell in Denmark as a way to go, we’ll see if Mahmood’s policies match theirs

Good, fly tipping is a huge problem and impacts the environment and people's lives. No-one wants to live near such a tip. That should be a priority, rather than the conflict you refer to.

I prefer the term genocide to conflict

I agree with a lot of policies from Restore but only The Reform Party and Nigel Farage as leader has any hope of winning a General Election in my opinion.

Just read what Hungary do. Match them back to the border and just leave them there.

Mahmoud will be constrained by the backbenchers, regardless of how genuine her intentions. That’s the biggest problem with Labour.

You talk about the political class being brainwashed and yet refer to asylum seekers as a “sea of rapists and murderers”. The facts and the statistics simply do not support that kind of description. Unlike many people I’ve actually met and spent time with people who arrived by irregular means and were subsequently granted asylum. One of them was a talented teacher at my school. A few others I met more recently. They were kind, generous and very hardworking. I was actually shocked because I’d expected something very different. There is an agenda to whip up fear and fury about immigration and it is clearly working. People are being terrified and radicalised. Yes, we have a problem and need solutions. But it’s actually dangerous and counterproductive to whip up the public in this way.

A major problem is you and others can’t know who is a risk. Men aren’t vetted in any real way, how could you check with say the Taliban that someone has committed a crime?

Whilst the system might bring in legitimate people it cannot stop murderous or dangerous people, hence Rhiannon Whyte, the Belfast event, events in Germany and elsewhere too.

The numbers are too high for any real vetting checks to be done. I’d bet my house that among some of the new arrivals, will be members of extremist terrorist cells.

The Governments failure to take action on this issue is putting all of us at risk.

I really don't care about your word preferences.
I'm expressing my opinion about the environmental problem of fly tipping.
