AIBU to think the PM is ignoring the asylum issue?

I’m firmly working class, and I don’t believe that what we need is to spread the asylum seekers around more. The reason I’m annoyed is not because I don’t want them housed by the middle class, but because I think it’s completely ignoring the problem. I think we need secure detention centres whilst the country either approves the application or sends them off home. These will be safe, food provided, clothes, play areas for the children. The accommodation will have the basics like temporary housing does but they can’t leave until application approved or sent home. But they can’t leave and roam UK unless their application is accepted. Anyone who is violent etc and makes it not safe will automatically be sent home.
I liked this prime minister as I thought he had both feet on the ground, but it seems not….!
If he admits it’s not fair only working class has to deal with it, then surely, he admits it’s a problem and he’s not actually addressing it?

YANBU = PM ignoring actual issue
YABU = Issue is that only working class have to deal with them

Upthread there were comments about Detention Camps. Was the idea that they should be segregated by sex. Men in one and women and children in another.
They would be fed and kept warm and dry and safe.

Boat numbers were down because the boat and engine supply were temporarily disrupted. They have now established new supply chains with huge boats and the rest of the year will be interesting to watch. I've also read that numbers arriving in private planes, small private boats, and hidden in freight by traffickers are believed to be rising but are hugely difficult to track if they don't claim asylum.

This is huge business run by organised crime gangs, they aren't just going to stop until we dissuade their customer base from paying for their services.

There are far more illegal immigrants in the country than are counted. Large numbers which we don't officially seem to count go missing before or during the asylum process. Spain recently issued an amnesty to the half a million they thought they had in the country. They closed the scheme when 1,174,978 applications had been received. (And the storming of Ceuta is the result of that amnesty, too).

By definition we do not know how many illegal entrants we have but the migration observatory suggests the figure is somewhere between 450k to 800k. Plans for ID cards (now abandoned) would have made the UK much less attractive as a place to work illegally. We should also consider a third party processing site. Being based in Albania whilst your claim is determined will also act as a deterrent if this can be agreed. I would also like to see us doing more to stop migrants at sea. It is possible to use barriers to stop boats entering a given zone (British waters). We could then have a French vessel on stand by to take everyone back to France.

I don’t think more ID does much, it limits those who are legitimate and you’d still get black market work. Germany has ID and still a large undocumented migration issue.

The answer is border control. The rest of your post might do that.

AgnesX · 16/08/2026 10:40

Voters don't want them in hotels, council accommodation, private accommodation, old army camps, removal centres already exist. Where do you expect these detention centres to go?

BermudaRhombus · 16/08/2026 10:40

EasternStandard · 16/08/2026 10:29

A major problem is you and others can’t know who is a risk. Men aren’t vetted in any real way, how could you check with say the Taliban that someone has committed a crime?

Whilst the system might bring in legitimate people it cannot stop murderous or dangerous people, hence Rhiannon Whyte, the Belfast event, events in Germany and elsewhere too.

Yes and we need to find solutions to those sorts of problems. But increasingly I see comments, both here and elsewhere, inferring that every single person is a murderer and/or rapist. Men are constantly referred to as “fighting age” which is a bizarre description, except when you step back and think about why certain politicians are using that language. We are reaching the point where people are absolutely terrified and suddenly they’re willing to contemplate sinking boats and other crazy things that they would never normally support.

AndImVictoriaMalcolm · 16/08/2026 10:46

I voted YABU because it’s too early imo to write off Burnham, especially as this isn’t the only crisis we are facing. Climate change is going to make this issue worse and this summer has really highlighted that.

Detention centres. Used by many nations to detain and hold illegal migrants

Restore say they have found evidence that this is going to continue until 2039. They have evidence of procurement contracts for housing, transport, resources for the migrants etc. We're not going to have a country left. The UK is over.

JenRummy · 16/08/2026 10:51

LuckyHazelFox · 16/08/2026 09:17

Well I'm going to just say it. Whichever PM finds a way to subvert human rights/asylum obligations, is the one who will be a national hero. Regardless of what the lefties say, it's a pressing issue that's becoming more perilous to our own citizens. I'm no longer interested in sugar coating it.

People advocate for the removal of other people’s human rights not their own.

I don’t think there is a solution to that issue unless we opt out of allowing anyone who arrives processing. It could be as Australia have done so still within the convention.

But there’s no way to check records of a male in war torn Sudan, or from the Taliban.

So we need to decide if we want a system inherent with risks or not. I don’t think the system is good enough to keep going with horrendous outcomes such as Rhiannon Whyte or Belfast so I’d stop it.

Aus still takes 20k or so on humanitarian visas, but they really are vetted first, I’d do that.

Wingingit73 · 16/08/2026 10:53

The thing is the country has other issues.

If you’re talking about people claiming asylum in the UK, then that will obviously never end. 60% of claimants don’t arrive by small boat. We will always need an asylum system to process applications and it will always need to be resourced. But if Rupert Lowe has found some particular evidence of something then he should present it.

Didn’t Labour pledge to ‘smash the gangs’?

Quite right when protecting my human rights is part of the country I was born in. A right to walk safely without being harassed by men of whose country i choose not to visit. Danger is being brought to us - without consent.

What state will the UK be in if this continues? How many are we expected to take? 50 million? 150 million? 250 million? The infrastructure isn't supporting the people who are here now. Where's the money coming from?

No, as women, we are meant to feel guilty; It's just another way of suppressing our worth. We are used to not looking at external sources to keep us safe.

Process and just deny?

Yes, but most asylum applicants have nothing to do with gangs. The gangs are applicable to the boats situation and sometimes to other irregular routes such as lorries, private boats etc.

ComeAndGetBiriyani · 16/08/2026 11:11

Yes sure, but even that requires a well resourced asylum process. It is also true that long term arrangements are often substantially discounted versus short term arrangements. The government has to plan long term. Has Restore revealed the actual terms of what they allege has been agreed? What are the early termination terms etc? It’s really not as simplistic as is being suggested.

I guess because "white man bad too" we should just have to accept swarms of men from countries where women are next to nothing

I’ve already commented on the potentially catastrophic economic consequences of operation Fortress. If you think it’s bad now, wait until we’re in a conflict with our largest trading market. Farage is talking about putting tariffs on the EU. It’s absolutely batshit!

Which applicants do you mean?

Cleo65 · 16/08/2026 11:20

He could stop the boat illegals if he wanted to. He/government past & present don't want to - the bigger question is why don't they want to?

BermudaRhombus · 16/08/2026 11:21

EasternStandard · 16/08/2026 11:20

Which applicants do you mean?

Over a third of all asylum seekers initially travel to the UK legally using work, study, visitor, or other temporary visas, and later apply for asylum.
