AIBU to think the PM is ignoring the asylum issue?

BusyDog · 16/08/2026 06:33

I’m firmly working class, and I don’t believe that what we need is to spread the asylum seekers around more. The reason I’m annoyed is not because I don’t want them housed by the middle class, but because I think it’s completely ignoring the problem. I think we need secure detention centres whilst the country either approves the application or sends them off home. These will be safe, food provided, clothes, play areas for the children. The accommodation will have the basics like temporary housing does but they can’t leave until application approved or sent home. But they can’t leave and roam UK unless their application is accepted. Anyone who is violent etc and makes it not safe will automatically be sent home.
I liked this prime minister as I thought he had both feet on the ground, but it seems not….!
If he admits it’s not fair only working class has to deal with it, then surely, he admits it’s a problem and he’s not actually addressing it?

YANBU = PM ignoring actual issue
YABU = Issue is that only working class have to deal with them

Yes, I'm sure that's what bogstandardname meant when they said "putting it bluntly". 🙄

Who knows but people are dying now in the crossings. It’s just glossed over. Or rather women and girls are more likely to die for some reason.

Surely you’re not serious? What on earth has Palestine got to do with the UK? What on earth can the UK do about Palestine, even if it did prioritise Palestine?

Honestly, I’m so sick of all of the people in the UK trotting out banal, virtue signalling gibberish because someone told than it’s the thing to do, without thinking through whether what they are saying holds water intellectually. See also people that state ‘JK Rowling is transphobic’ without being able to name one transphobic thing she’s said or done.

@Howlerhog The Palestine and Israel conflict is absolutely the UK's concern, since we helped create these issues we have a duty to help resolve them. Here is a brief summary of the ways in which we've fucked up:

  • British Mandate (1920-1948) controlled Palestine without clear self-determination.
  • Balfour Declaration (1917) supported a Jewish homeland, angering Arab populations.
  • Increased Jewish immigration under British rule, heightening tensions.
  • Poor mediation between Arabs and Jews, leading to violence.
  • 1939 White Paper restricted Jewish immigration, causing backlash.
  • Supported UN Partition Plan (1947), dividing Palestine into Jewish and Arab states.
  • 1948 withdrawal left a power vacuum, sparking the Arab-Israeli War

The 'tougher measure' of murder?

Oh dear. Hyperbole and emotional guilt don't work anymore. They certainly didn't prevent the death of Rhiannon Whyte.

I have.

You haven’t.

Not in reply to me you haven't. But that's ok.

Rights to freedom from persecution (ie asylum) should stay.

Small boaters aren’t persecuted. They’re illegal immigrants with no claim for refugee status.

But until the asylum application has been determined, it's not possible to say if there has been persecution and therefore entitled to refugee status.

Google tells me that the success rate for asylum applications is 42% (unfortunately it doesn't break down the figures by means of arrival). That's a lot of people that would be returned to countries where they would be at risk.

MaturingCheeseball · 16/08/2026 09:47

Apparently men are arriving all the time - not in small boats but “rescued” by the Royal Navy and RNLI. Two vessels arrived yesterday full of men. It’s basically launch from France or Belgium, put out an SOS and get ferried to Britain.

Something has to be done or we will be done for - economically, culturally and in terms of crime and security.

I dread the Govt coming up with a Spanish-style amnesty to clear the huge backlog. There is no earthly justification for accepting vast numbers of undocumented, unskilled men into this country and imposing them on its citizens.

Yes make no documents a criminal offence, we know they destroy them

Exactly. It's already a criminal offense in India

Why do you want dangerous illegal migrants in this country?

That is a textbook Straw Man fallacy.

I never said I want dangerous criminals in the country. Pointing out that murdering people at sea is immoral (and illegal!) is not the same as wanting open borders.

You are creating a false choice. It is entirely possible to support strong, lawful border security without advocating for the mass murder of human beings. Instead of twisting my words, can you actually defend the suggestion that the government should sink boats and kill people?

ScarlettOYara · 16/08/2026 09:49

TeaAndALittlePeace · 16/08/2026 09:42

I’m surprised there aren’t any left wing political parties that have a really tough stance on migration. I think they would be really popular. I’ve always voted Tory and not Labour, mainly because I always know that left wing parties are softer on immigration ( not that the Tories did much about it either).

But deep down I think I am quite left wing liberal politically.

A lot of people are concerned about Reform gaining ground and possibly winning the next election. And now, Burnham saying he’s going to distribute migrants to more middle class towns ‘to make it fair’, I bet there will be loads of middle class Labour voters, who will be secretly voting for Reform at the next election.

I find the lack of action from both the Cons and Labour over this issue really alarming. They had a Cobra meeting about the drought last week. Why isn’t this issue being treated with urgency?

Edited

I think you make a good point, and I am mindful of policies in Denmark which are robust, but not driven by the right wing parties. I do fear that this issue will be a gift to the extremists and it's really got to be dealt with. However, it's going to be a challenge, to put it mildly

Explain how it's not murder if you deliberately sink a boat and the occupants drown.

Bogstandardname · 16/08/2026 09:51

MissJoGrant · 16/08/2026 09:36

You're saying drown them.

At least the mask is off.

Disgusting.

Massive deterrent. That is how strongly people feel about illegal immigrants that yes they would consider this. How the hell are we going to stop this if all other efforts fail so miserably. Yes, it is disgusting but that is how high feeling is about this issue and yes even "naice" people I have spoken to feel the same. We have to stop being a nation of pearl clutchers and toughen up. We are too soft as a nation and taken advantage of. We are too compliant and don't want to rock the boat, no pun intended.

EasternStandard · 16/08/2026 09:52

LakieLady · 16/08/2026 09:34

But those areas may not have suitable places for asylum seekers to be accommodated. It makes far more sense to accommodate them in former military bases than in hotels, the costs must be much less.

What would make a difference would be to speed up the asylum decision and appeals process. I believe it takes around 6 months for the initial decision, and at least the same again to get an appeal decision.

It doesn’t actually cost much less at all, it costs more. So you might be in luck if you’d like to share the burden but don’t have the space for barracks.

Former Military Barracks & Large Sites: £135 to £160 per night. Despite political efforts to phase out hotels in favour of ex-military bases (such as RAF Wethersfield and Crowborough Training Camp), the National Audit Office (NAO) confirmed these sites collectively cost more than hotels. This is due to massive initial refurbishment bills and steep setup costs

Dangerous people are coming in via the boats. I don't want them here. I want them peacefully returned to their country of origin

It's not going to happen. We are dealing with reality.

I’m unconvinced he considered anything properly and certainly not in detail. He comes across as someone who has wanted this role all of his life and yet is completely unprepared when he actually gets it.

Agreed, and I havent waded through the rest of the thread yet but Im amazed at the 'get outs' that he seems to have been given here whereas people were all over Starmer within weeks of him becoming PM (voted in I might add) and declaring him a failure already because he hadnt sorted out the whole country already.

inamarina · 16/08/2026 09:53

LuckyHazelFox · 16/08/2026 07:40

This is the mentality:

I don't care that men want to dress up as women, so long as they stay out of women's spaces = you're transphobic.

I know that there are good Muslims but I worry about extremists = you're Islamophobic.

I believe in equality but I don't believe in the failed DEI initiatives. = you're racist.

Now you tell me where the nuance and critical thinking is because these are the people telling us they possess it by bucket load.

Well put.

Admitting that a policy is disgusting but advocating for it anyway isn't being 'tough', it is a total collapse of logic.

Sinking boats isn't a logistical solution; it is a crime against humanity that would destroy us on the world stage.

It's easy to be tough behind a keyboard.

Think what you're actually saying. Close your eyes and picture it.

Wtf.

Israel and Arab states have fucked up since then, so thats on them

Hamas attacked Israel, Israel are now at war with the 'leaders' of Gaza.

Thats on them both. And in a foreign land.

Home issues are what our government need to focus on.

It’s amazing that people have been radicalised to this extent. First you scare people and then they’ll vote for anyone who promises to protect them. It really is the oldest trick in the book and it’s playing out right in front of us.
