AIBU to think the PM is ignoring the asylum issue?

I’m firmly working class, and I don’t believe that what we need is to spread the asylum seekers around more. The reason I’m annoyed is not because I don’t want them housed by the middle class, but because I think it’s completely ignoring the problem. I think we need secure detention centres whilst the country either approves the application or sends them off home. These will be safe, food provided, clothes, play areas for the children. The accommodation will have the basics like temporary housing does but they can’t leave until application approved or sent home. But they can’t leave and roam UK unless their application is accepted. Anyone who is violent etc and makes it not safe will automatically be sent home.
I liked this prime minister as I thought he had both feet on the ground, but it seems not….!
If he admits it’s not fair only working class has to deal with it, then surely, he admits it’s a problem and he’s not actually addressing it?

YANBU = PM ignoring actual issue
YABU = Issue is that only working class have to deal with them

Boat numbers were down because the boat and engine supply were temporarily disrupted. They have now established new supply chains with huge boats and the rest of the year will be interesting to watch. I've also read that numbers arriving in private planes, small private boats, and hidden in freight by traffickers are believed to be rising but are hugely difficult to track if they don't claim asylum.

This is huge business run by organised crime gangs, they aren't just going to stop until we dissuade their customer base from paying for their services.

There are far more illegal immigrants in the country than are counted. Large numbers which we don't officially seem to count go missing before or during the asylum process. Spain recently issued an amnesty to the half a million they thought they had in the country. They closed the scheme when 1,174,978 applications had been received. (And the storming of Ceuta is the result of that amnesty, too).

Yes, if people can enter by any means under international law they will.

Burnham may have felt things had worked and he was fine but new supply chains will be found.

To put it bluntly, we need to start puncturing some inflatables.

You're saying drown them.

At least the mask is off.

Disgusting.

But those areas may not have suitable places for asylum seekers to be accommodated. It makes far more sense to accommodate them in former military bases than in hotels, the costs must be much less.

What would make a difference would be to speed up the asylum decision and appeals process. I believe it takes around 6 months for the initial decision, and at least the same again to get an appeal decision.

Fair point, and many appeals go on for years. A more speedy process would be beneficial all round.

Most regular people are worrying about, particularly when you live in an area that has been flooded by foreign men who stand around in big groups, showing absolute disrespect and being intimidating towards women and school girls. Wakey wakey. Just because you haven’t been affected by it doesn’t mean that others haven’t.

💯

I’m waiting for his mentioning of the Palestinian genocide…he seems to want to sort out fly tipping first.

Yes I hope he focuses on issues that affect the UK first and foremost.

We have crumbling schools, crumbling public services, crumbling roads (half of them are also shut and they're still crumbling when they reopen), crumbling social care, litter everywhere, poor resource provision for new housing areas, barely any fucntional and affordable public services, no new reservoirs built

The list is endless

Palestine has no place to be discussed by the UK government. The only thing that needs discussion around that is that Jewish people in the UK need protection from people who feel justified to attack them for something that is happening in another country.

Gingernaut · 16/08/2026 09:38

The country is in drought, crops are failing and the place is burning down

There are slightly more pressing concerns than something which can wait until Parliament returns after the summer recess

Labour have asked the French to puncture boats, they have done, not with people in them though.

How do I think national security is affected by the arrival of thousands of unvetted young men?

Are you seriously asking that?

As for the rest, the numbers in are overwhelming, drop or not, and with net contributors leaving the funding is getting more and more difficult.

I think the threat profile is much wider than that, and I am much more concerned about the threats from other countries.

He might have skipped his holiday in that case.

Leave the ECHR (possible), leave and the refugee convention. And yes if they scrap and destroy their passports keep them in immigration detention. The USA and India also have large scale immigration detention centres. In India destructive of your passport is a criminal offense.

They don't allow them into the community

Yes make no documents a criminal offence, we know they destroy them

Yes, I agree. The rise in antisemitism of late is shocking and our Jewish friends and neighbours don't feel safe.

The Indian government consistently enforces a strict "detect, detain, and deport" policy for undocumented non-citizens, directly defying international human rights appeals.

What do you think Andy can do by spending any time himself on any of those?

TheSmallAssassin · 16/08/2026 09:41

AndyKitten · 16/08/2026 09:28

But let me turn your question back at you.

If immigration is so good for the country then why are we in the state we’re in?

Surely we must be drowning in milk and honey by now?

But I haven't made that claim, just that immigration isn't the main driver behind the issues that most concern me. There's no need to keep engaging if you can't back up your claims that it is.

Monty36 · 16/08/2026 09:42

He cannot not talk about it for much longer that is for sure.
One hope is that he seems to pick up and understand what bothers people. He can read the room. Or seems to be able to. Something Starmer lacked.
Mahmood also can I think.
The other thing I like about him so far is that he seems to have the approach of ‘where there is a Will there is a way’. Something I wholeheartedly agree with.
You do have to have a team of people around you that grasp the issues, recognise a problem and are intent on resolving it. He will be bored of being told what cannot be done.
Asylum should be very low for this country.
Legal immigration is largely driven by universities and employers. Both need to look to hire fewer overseas than in the past.
So we wait to see before we judge.
What I also like about him is that he is prepared to push back. If his Civil servants give him answers which are not okay he tells them to go back and try harder. Eg. The early release scheme.

TeaAndALittlePeace · 16/08/2026 09:42

I’m surprised there aren’t any left wing political parties that have a really tough stance on migration. I think they would be really popular. I’ve always voted Tory and not Labour, mainly because I always know that left wing parties are softer on immigration ( not that the Tories did much about it either).

But deep down I think I am quite left wing liberal politically.

A lot of people are concerned about Reform gaining ground and possibly winning the next election. And now, Burnham saying he’s going to distribute migrants to more middle class towns ‘to make it fair’, I bet there will be loads of middle class Labour voters, who will be secretly voting for Reform at the next election.

I find the lack of action from both the Cons and Labour over this issue really alarming. They had a Cobra meeting about the drought last week. Why isn’t this issue being treated with urgency?

What could be worse? We've got women and girls increasingly at risk in our own country. That's aside from the broader issue of mass infiltration and a threat to our national security.

A trade war with Europe which is the most likely outcome as retaliation for operation Fortress. Associated market uncertainty. Rocketing costs of servicing our national debt. The outcome could be very, very bleak. Think Liz Truss on steroids.

Other countries are a threat, absolutely.

Putin is increasingly desperate and that’s a bad thing.

You cannot discount the threat from sleeper cells entering illegally because of that though.

How does only talking about that resolve it faster? Not sure why he can deal with various things including write articles on Arday but not mention what is impacting people now, eg Piddington.
