AIBU to think the PM is ignoring the asylum issue?

I’m firmly working class, and I don’t believe that what we need is to spread the asylum seekers around more. The reason I’m annoyed is not because I don’t want them housed by the middle class, but because I think it’s completely ignoring the problem. I think we need secure detention centres whilst the country either approves the application or sends them off home. These will be safe, food provided, clothes, play areas for the children. The accommodation will have the basics like temporary housing does but they can’t leave until application approved or sent home. But they can’t leave and roam UK unless their application is accepted. Anyone who is violent etc and makes it not safe will automatically be sent home.
I liked this prime minister as I thought he had both feet on the ground, but it seems not….!
If he admits it’s not fair only working class has to deal with it, then surely, he admits it’s a problem and he’s not actually addressing it?

YANBU = PM ignoring actual issue
YABU = Issue is that only working class have to deal with them

I've just read about a pensioner, an elderly man, raped outside a church in Harrow by an Eritrean.

What?!!! 😭

“Could be safer” doesn’t really cut it though, does it? Women in this country shouldn’t be put at ANY greater risk, no matter how small.

Omg I agree!!
I was saying let's have women and children first !

Or course he is ignoring it the same way I’m ignoring cleaning the oven.

It’s a hassle and messy and hard to do so I keep putting it off.

🤣🤣🤣

Why “what”? This happens incredibly frequently. It’s not more newsworthy because it’s a man surely.

i’m actually surprised that that guy has been in court already. I remember when it happened.

There will come a day, and maybe it's here already, where voting will be futile since those in power refuse to improve the lot of the citizens for reasons that just cannot be fathomed. And there's nothing we can do about it is there?

Changing the deck chairs on the Titanic won't change things either. Whoever is in power will do the same eventually, maybe with different PR strategies and messages, but the end result will be the same. Follow the money and mess with the citizens' heads at the same time.

We in Scotland are there already. Political Groundhog Day. The SNP keep getting voted in on approx 30% of the vote because a minority of Scot’s for whatever reason (mainly xenophobia) want Indy. The rest of Scot’s vote for unionist parties but the vote is split out between the other parties. The SNP promises Indy, their voters vote for that but the SNP cannot produce Indy because only a minority of Scot’s want it.

The SNP are terrible at day to day governing. Their spending is out of control, they keep expanding the public sector and giving unaffordable public sector pay rises, handing out endless benefits because it makes them feel like the good guys, leaving no money for improving the lives of the majority of Scottish citizens. Services are dire - education and health are markedly worse than the English equivalents - and yet come election the needle returns to the start of the song.

Im so sick of it!

  • I don't know much about Sweden on this issue but it does seem like they have taken steps to assess this issue !

It’s Denmark that has really hammered down on immigration.

It is quite shocking although there’ll be tumbleweed about this too. No one should mind really or mention it.

If OAPs getting dragged behind churches and raped by asylum seekers happens “incredibly frequently” then that is all the more reason for stricter immigration controls!

Interestingly, it seems that Denmark secured an opt-out on EU asylum policy after the Danish people voted "no" in a referendum on the Maastricht Treaty in 1992;

Denmark negotiated an opt-out on EU asylum policy back in 1992, which means it does not have to adhere to the rules set out in the Common European Asylum System. This gives Denmark room to be slightly stricter...

To ensure that countries do not erode their asylum rights so as to be less attractive as a destination country for asylum seekers, all Member States agreed to apply the same rules. Those rules are set out in the Common European Asylum System, and Denmark is the only Member State that is not a party to that system.

Perhaps the government should do an emergency alert to warn people to avoid going out into their communities. The bloody fkrs.

It wasn’t really started but the threat of it was communicated and people did voluntarily flow to ROI via NI.

Exactly, it stood a chance of working, we’d made the effort and paid the upfront costs, so Labour dumped it immediately.

Where should we build these detention centres ?
Would detention "camps “ be a better word to describe these ?
If they have a play area for kids, should we include a school as well? Should the fence be electrified as well?
How long is it going to take? First we identify the location. Then we fight whoever lives there who doesn’t want a camp. Then we have to assign a budget, go through voting, building, transporting….

There is no easy solution.

But soldiers live in army camps. It’s okay for them is it? They aren’t locked in but they can’t come and go as they please. I know by the way as DH was a soldier for 20 years.

In Iraq the British soldiers had no food. DH came back skin and bone. Family had to send food packages out once the fighting had stopped.

Families and women and children are housed by the way not kept with single men. In York there are a few accommodations with families in as you see them coming and going all the time. They are safe as they are genuine families. There aren’t many women and children that come over.

That’s going to be an issue for them. It could be what costs them the next GE.

Well if the result of Brexit referendum didn’t get the message across what will??

YoniWheretheSunDontShine · 17/08/2026 13:52

@Clavinova that's v interesting re Denmark thank you

My next door but one neighbour started out feeding a couple of pigeons. Next thing there's a big group, next a massive flock sitting on our roofs waiting for grub time, crapping everywhere and frightening off the little birds. Her suicidal empathy for these pigeons cost her a lot of money and she peed off the neighbours. She had to remove the incentives. The food was taken away. Problem solved within one month.

Andy, please remove the incentives. They must not be allowed to stay in the UK. They must not be allowed British citizenship. They must not be allowed to bring family over. No more freebies.

Place these lads in floating accommodation out at sea with no access to the UK or a third country. If they are not happy, they can go back to France.

Time to be tough.

What’s really interesting about Denmark is that the anti immigration push is coming from the left wing socialists rather than the right wing racists. The socialists decided that the best way to protect the welfare state and other public services funded by Danish citizens, was to restrict it as much as possible to Danish citizens only. The policies come from a refusal to spend money on non-citizens.

Ablondiebutagoody · 17/08/2026 15:22

Of course. Like Keir Starmer, he will avoid all the big issues like immigration, defence budget, welfare reform etc.

Instead, he will attempt to look like he's doing something and "helping" by twatting about with bus fares, a tenner off leccy bills etc. etc.

No, that place is reserved for the much maligned white working class.

Ah but my great nieces and nephews in Scotland can go to university free of charge, whilst my grandchildren have to pay around £9k a year tuition costs! All for a little bit more on your income tax bill.

I’m Scottish, moved to Northern England long ago, and recognise the xenophobic attitudes of some SNP voters. If it’s got Scottish, Scotland, or Scots in the name they’ll vote for it. The policies aren’t important. A.B.E.!
