To expect everyone at my wedding to stick to the colour scheme?

Autumnalbride · 15/08/2026 21:39

I'm having an autumn themed wedding. I've asked everyone, all the wedding party, family and all the guests to wear autumn colours - brown, orange, yellow, red etc.
Some of the men want to wear grey suits but I am upset by this because I don't see grey as an autumn colour. They say they will wear autumn coloured ties and accessories but I said I want the suits to be in Autumn colours
Is this unreasonable?

You don't know the half of it.

We went to a national trust place and she had a tantrum at the gate because the lady couldn't look up her membership fast enough (which turned out to be because the wrong address was on there) said right in front of the lady that it was just a shitty country house anyway so she didn't think it was worth all this hassle, then when the kids couldn't put on the paper hats in their activity packs fast enough she grabbed my daughter's and jammed it on her head, then when we got in she started slagging off the flowers (no joke), saying the way the fruit trees were in lines was stupid and that she could have designed all the gardens better, then when I called her out for being such a misery, she went and sat on a bench on her own and sulked.
Then I heard that she thinks I should have been grateful for her driving us out there and having a nice day.
And that's typical behaviour for her.

Honestly, I think you've made the right decision not to go - you and your family are well out of it.

Your sister sounds really horrible - she slagged off your wedding in a Reddit post!!

I think her photos are going to look awful - burgundy suits!!!

I would use the £300 hen do money to pay for a lovely meal out for your family on her wedding day, and celebrate the fact that you're not there.

I think the poster used DS to mean your Dear Sister, not your Dear Son.

Of course a 13 Yr old doesn't want to be a ring bearer! Especially if he has to wear an orange suit ...

Yeah and half the stuff she said in the post on reddit was made up. It was bizarre and really hurtful.

She said stuff about my relationship that wasn't true too.

And I'd literally just put her up in my house while she found somewhere to live after moving here.

Yes, it's unreasonable to expect all guests to wear a specific colour scheme. Especially as it's one which men in particular don't use routinely, so they may have to spend a lot of money on clothes that they'll only wear once.

I think that autumn-coloured accessories are a perfectly valid compromise. And you certainly shouldn't be getting 'upset' with your guests. You're inviting them to celebrate your marriage, not to provide colour-themed photos.

Nat6999 · 16/08/2026 00:22

You sound like the woman on Tiktok who is making the most ridiculous rules for her wedding guests, from the minimum amount to be given as a present to what kind of car guests must arrive in. Weddings are supposed to be fun, part of which in years to come is remembering Aunty Minnie who came in that hideous purple outfit covered in dog hairs. It isn't an Instagram event, it is two people making legal declarations that they love, respect & will look after the person they are marrying.

Completely missing the point but has she seen a British autumn? Grey seems extremely autumnal!

But seriously - she’s insane. Guests are guests. Not props.

Yes let people wear what they want too.

Already posted again, now I’ve seen this 🤦‍♀️!

I think we’re straight now.

Honestly, leave her too it! With her fecking autumnal colours! Yee gods!

I suppose you should be glad it’s not a Christmas wedding and she wants all the men as santas and women as angels!

Do you want men turning up in bright orange suits? They'd look like Mr Tumble or similar.

😂😂

I can barely believe it myself.

But a reverse doesn't make things more believable. It just 'reverses" it. Just makes it form the other side.

  1. Grey is definitely an autumn colour
  2. You're being too controlling.

You can absolutely dictate colours for your wedding party, and even their partners if they'll in professional photos. But random friends and family should absolutely not be subjected to a certain colour scheme. By all means tell them it's autumn themed/colour scheme, but I certainly wouldn't throw my toys out the pram over grey suits, particularly given it is an Autumn colour and also isn't particularly attention-grabbing. Id be far more concerned if someone turn up in something completely inappropriate like bright green shorts and flip flops or worse - white.

SapphireSeptember · 16/08/2026 00:56

Aside from your crazy sister's completely outlandish behaviour, I'd argue certain shades of pink are autumnal (some berries and leaves turn pink) as well as purple (ditto) and blue (because of the sky.) As someone who once dreamed of having a bouquet of autumn leaves when I got married because I love autumn so much, she's completely over the top.

The fact she's a total cow bag as well is the icing on top of the shitty cake!

Quokkas · 16/08/2026 00:57

Thiiink you’re being a tiny bit bridezilla.

MummyHummous · 16/08/2026 01:02

My friend insisted everyone wore a certain colour to her wedding celebration (she got married abroad, this was for friends to celebrate it), I resented being told to wear a certain colour that I didn’t own an outfit in and doesn’t suit me. My friend wanted me to wear a dress her daughter didn’t like, but bought a cheap dress on Vinted that I chucked after the event as I hated it. YABU.

I shall look forward to your thread after the wedding titled "Half of my guests refused to come to my wedding due to my insane demands over their outfits", I'm sure it will be an interesting read.
