To think the bbq/fires in the heatwave responses have the air of Covid about them …

’my neighbour is having a bbq what should I do’, Ring 101, call the fire brigade, take photos, people will die!

Again, it’s not a hysterical reaction to think that people shouldn’t do things that run a risk of burning things down.

How do you know they are the same people who didn't wear masks etc during Covid?

Again, it feels like the uk completely overreacts, live in a Southern European country that has higher temperatures and for much longer. Bbqs have never been banned and we’re allowed to water our gardens, sprinklers on. I just don’t understand it?

Was that the one where the illegal converted camper on its way to Boomtown caught fire and has destroyed the A31 near Ringwood and caused mayhem in peak holiday time, it is going to take weeks to repair the road.

No, they are comparing people's reactions to the alerts and warnings which is indeed very reminiscent of people during Covid.

Reusable garden BBQs have not been banned.

A supervised gas BBQ is fine. You can bet our residents' FB page would go crazy if someone smelled a BBQ. Akin to how people would say "I saw Janice go out for a walk at 11am AND 11pm - she's a murderer" during covid.

I don't personally feel its appropriate to be having ANY kind of BBQ with the alert that has been issued. Therefore I won't be.

I'm phoning the police and fire brigade if someone mentions having a bbq out on their grassless gravel and stone garden. Wait for it to be raining to have a bbq. Raining! Preferably mid winter, just to be safe.

We have gas, but aren’t having BBQs. Charcoal BBQs next to hedges / vegetation can be incendiary. Younger people don’t have the experience and could easily set something in flames, especially with a few drinks involved. And it’s best all round just not to have one right now.

The police here have asked anyone who sees anyone with BBQs, firepits or anything that could cause an issue to call the non-emergency police number

We’re rural-ish and the trees and hedges have been so neglected by the council in the last couple of years that one garden going up will spread so easily (folks have actually been out since the Stourbridge fire trying to trim some of it back)

He felt the fact they “always” have that for his daughter’s birthday meant it should be fine.

i think he was expecting a tonne of “yeah they can’t tell us what to do” responses, but has not happened at all. It’s been quite amusing as he’s not a pleasant man anyways.

I agree OP. Everyone's suddenly on alert for signs of rule-breaking, making up their own even stricter version of "the rules" and debating "logging" perceived infractions with the police.

The alert wouldn't be needed if people had a modicum of common sense. It was explaining the obvious to idiots, not inviting people to be informants in a police state.

Yeah I agree, in the sense that guidelines are issued and people interpret them differently but try to pass opinions off as facts. Agree 100% There's a thread about camping stoves right now that is packed full of covidesque bullshit made up laws and regulations, and people getting all angry and shouty 'it's the LAW!!' about some fake law they've just invented in their own head.
