To think the bbq/fires in the heatwave responses have the air of Covid about them …

It depends though, doesn't it? A gas fired barbecue on a patio is a lot safer than one lit with loose coals. It also depends if the latter is being tended by thirty, very drunk, end of term students vs two parents entertaining granny and grandad.

Yes agreed. People appear to think a text message alerting people to danger has changed the law, as well as interpreting their own more draconian restrictions ie no standing bbqs and expecting everyone to follow them.

I saw people bbqing on the ground in a park last week. It’s a risk. Yes there are safe ways to do it but the best way is to ask people not to.

We were going to have a BBQ in the garden this weekend but are now not because of the alert. Not a big deal, we will wait until it is safe to do so.

For me, I am glad the government have issued this alert. The bloody country is covered in wildfires and the emergency services are stretched. People have lost their homes, their land, not to mention what has happened to the wildlife.

No-one needs to have a BBQ of ANY type while this is happening.

We're being asked to individually take very very minor measures, so that the risk of fire is significantly reduced for the entire country.

I can see parallels with Covid, but the measures were infinitely more restrictive, as you well know, and the risks far more unknown.

Whereas we know that heat, drought and open flames cause fires, both deliberate and inadvertent, so why not reduce the risk to as close to zero as we can? Particularly when huge sections of various countries have been destroyed.

No, doesn't feel remotely like that. Disposable bbqs have been banned because by their nature, people generally take them to a park or somewhere and stand them directly on the grass. And often don't put them out properly. I imagine the move is to give police more authority to make people put them out.

A man in the next town over from me set a fire in his garden. He not only burnt his own house down, but his neighbour's houses too.

The problem is that many people are stupid, irresponsible and selfish. I'm sure i could have a BBQ in my garden and not burn down the estate, but if that guy lived next to me would i want him lighting up a BBQ? Or the drunk guy down the road have a fire pit with his crusty mates? Hell, no.

It's a shame we have to legislate for stupid, but when we don't literal tradgedies happen. It might feel like an overreaction to you, but seriously, who so desperately needs to have a BBQ? This is NOT anything like covid and keeping millions of kids off school and elderly people confined from family. YABU.

I live in the New Forest where a recent fire (not bbq related) and in fact ongoing fire has destroyed 1.6 square miles so far.

There have also been numerous smaller fires, some from idiots with disposable bbq and some from arson loving teenagers or other lowlife.

Friends have had to evacuate their terrified horses, some have had to evacuate their homes.

There was a wildfire about half a mile from us less than two weeks ago. Some people had to be evacuated . Thankfully no homes were lost. So not long after last night's alert some idiot lit a bonfire.I have no words
