To think the bbq/fires in the heatwave responses have the air of Covid about them …

’my neighbour is having a bbq what should I do’, Ring 101, call the fire brigade, take photos, people will die!

Why would I or anyone want to literally put lives at risk , homes at risk, make people vulnerable etc all for some flame cooked food ?? Why ?

I do understand your point - no need to have a BBQ, but we put lives at risk every time we e.g. get behind the wheel of a car, or fill up with fuel, or cook in our own homes.

I take it you dont know a single firefighter?

Can you link to the information that police are asking you to call them if you see someone having a reusable bbq in their garden? It’s contrary to national advice linked above

I was impressed impressed by the confidence of the commenter announcing that using a camping cooker is now illegal.

Yeah it's a great big spotlight on the selfish ....firefighters fighting wild fires can't come quickly to your electrical fire...your house burns down unnecessarily, crushed in a car accident and need to be cut out ...it takes just that little bit longer and your loved ones dies.

I bloody hate bbq food, I find it disgusting. Also living on the edge of the beautiful Peak District is currently worrying. Why does anyone need a disposable BBQ, take some sandwiches with you or an old fashioned picnic. I live close to a small woods where I walk my dogs.

I now have what3words downloaded so I no longer have to wait for the fire brigade. It’s always during school holidays, we caught some teenagers one year, they didn’t even realise that it’s arson, plus the woods back onto an estate of houses. We made them put it out, my husband is 6’1” and we’ll built due to sport and the cocky little shits weren’t intimidated one bit by his size and demeanour, that was until I threatened to call the police. We also had to explain that the woods was once an opencast site for coal extraction and that the fires would burn forever as there’s shale underneath, they then asked what coal/shale was 🤦‍♀️

The experts are the ones who asked the public not to use disposal bbqs and the experts are the ones who made the conscious decision not to include reusable bbqs in their advice.

True, but we mostly need to do those things as part of normal day to day life. Nobody needs to have a BBQ, light a bonfire or a fire pit etc. Just wait a bit until we hopefully have had some rain.

But most of those things can’t be helped - we need to get to work and cook in our own homes etc.

But no one needs to see fireworks off or have a disposable bbq.

Whilst speaking several COBRA briefed politicians and lead Firefighters have asked people to do the decent thing and not light any flames outside.

One of my biggest fears is house fires but I do think there’s a difference between a disposable bbq on a heath and a gas bbq on a patio. I wouldn’t have a bbq right now but in my experience, people have bbqs and the man cooks - might be the only time they cook if friends’ dhs are anything to go by. my dh has no desire to bbq so we just use the grill (while the bbq sits rusting in the garden) but he does cook.

To anyone saying cook indoors... kitchen appliances and cooking mishaps are the biggest cause of domestic fires in the UK, followed by other electrical appliances.

Smoking/cigarettes are the leading cause of fatal fires.

The warning specifically referred to disposable bbqs because they have been a significant cause of wild fires as people abandon them.

Yes, I should have specified no-one needs a disposable bbq. My error. I thought it would be obvious what I was talking about as that was what was specified on the alert.

Having said that personally I wouldn't use a charcoal bbq of any kind right now. But everyone needs to make their own judgement. There are wildfires raging where I am and I can smell the smoke in my house right now. That has made me wary of doing anything that might cause problems, however small the chance.

The only one I know is married.
They regularly have barbecues.
