AIBU to think heatwave barbecue reactions are starting to feel a bit Covid?

PatioDwellers · Today 08:53

To think the bbq/fires in the heatwave responses have the air of Covid about them …

’my neighbour is having a bbq what should I do’, Ring 101, call the fire brigade, take photos, people will die!

tinfoil bbqs in the countryside, tossers and rightly banned.

I mean I definitely don't think people should be reckless but loads of people seem to be reinterpreting a) recommendations as law and b) the recommendations as vastly more draconian than originally intended.

MargaretThursday · Today 10:25

Next door nearly burnt down due to a BBQ (not disposable, nice kettle BBQ in the middle of their garden) in not particularly dry conditions. Issue that day was probably more wind.
So it's always a risk.

I suspect part of it is with the hot weather more people are having BBQs so even if the risk stays the same, the number of fires go up eg if 0.1% (1 in 1000) BBQs start a fire. If normally in a week there are 10k BBQs, that's 10 fires. If it increases to 100K BBQs, that's 100 fires.

It does feel like it.

People reading rules and wondering what is technically allowed. Then there is the judging of people who don't follow their interpretation of rules. And how if their friends did x how they would not be friends anymore. No independent thinking just looking at rules.

Nothing has actually changed in 24h expect that government has informed people to not be stupid. It is equally dry as it was 10am yesterday but because of 'the rules' it ia suddenly dangerous.

No, its not "suddenly " dangerous, its been dangerous for weeks. Perhaps if youd spent the past few weeks trying to stop people setting light to your property and literally fire-fighting you might be relieved that the country was finally taking things seriously.

It’s been fascinating for me in Australia. Never knew so many people in the UK had BBQs in their gardens.

We regularly have total fire bans in summer because of bushfires but this doesn’t actually include backyard BBQs like many Australians have (in my state at least).

Neithe does the UK ones. The government guidance says to not leave backyard bbqs unattended but people have decided to just make up 'rules'.

I'm from the nordics (so nor hot and no heatwaves yet) and we also often have wildfire warnings. Those who are campers ot have a fireplace go to a website to see if a warning is in place, if not then fire away. Obviously not everyone follows them cause humans are humans. It is just about being careful and having the necesaary safety gear around.

Bet Boris is having a lovely bbq with his pals tonight 😂😂

Like Labour had a ‘gathering’?

chedderland · Today 10:27

The message was a bit excessive but it’s not much hardship. Hopefully it will stop the idiots near us burning rubbish. That should be illegal anyway. Disposable bbqs are dangerous and crap

chocoluv · Today 10:28

Some people cannot cope with being told what to do and always have to ‘fight the system’ regardless of what it is.

I’ve seen several people buying up multiple disposable BBQs and admitting that they’re going to use them every day.
These are the same people who refused to use masks and follow the rules.

I think some people are just miserable and this makes them feel a little bit better about themselves.

There is definitely a link between someone who is abusive/controlling and not following rules.
I think it’s because they need to always feel in control constantly.

covilha · Today 10:28

@Jaimelefromage - call 999 - it only takes one spark from the bbq to start a fire when the grass is TINDER dry.
Not risking my family and home because neighbour reckless enough to risk hers

mynameiscalypso · Today 10:29

We’re in a part of France where all barbecues are banned. The authorities are using drones to detect those who are still having them and you can face a prison sentence. Almost all wildfires are caused by humans being idiots and/or arsonists.

ragandbonewoman · Today 10:31

covilha · Today 10:15

can believe someone even asked this.
HOMES ARE BURNING.

DO NOT have that BBQ Op
And while I am no switch I would report you for lighting a BBQ if you were my neighbour. The safety of yourself and your family and preservation of everything you worked for may mean nothing to you but I won’t let you compromise mine.
And if that doesn’t deter you, how do you think social services will respond when they receive the referral from emergency services the next day?

This can’t be real? 🤣🤣🤣 Social Services turning up on the doorstep because Mum and Dad used their gas barbecue?! If you are real you definitely don’t live in the real world!

This warning should have been in place since June. I'm talking about what op asked regarding feeling like covid. This was a non-issue to peole and nobody had a problem with having a bbq on tuesday but now because of 'rules' people are threatening in all sorts of things eventhough hence "suddenly" it is dangerous where as this has been a problem for weeks/months.

JustEatThePizza · Today 10:32

Fields don't spontaneously combust, climate change creates the dry conditions, but the fires are caused by humans, whether BBQ, cigarette, vape batteries exploding, glass etc.

Two weeks ago I spoke to lots of people and no one was aware of the massive wildfires all over the country, so the mobile phone message was sensible.

Crikey. Where do you live?
Were you hanging around the BBQ aisles (before shops were banned from selling them)?

Most people have used common sense and realised that having disposable BBQs and letting off fireworks is dangerous.

The government and media then had to remind people constantly about the dangers.

Unfortunately, for some they still did not understand and now have to be actually told this and have a rule enforced because they can’t use common sense.

And then you have the deniers saying it’s a way to control the people blah blah blah.

It would lovely if we could live in a world where people used their common sense and listened to the experts.

They are lying to make a point. No one did this as they are banned and you can’t buy them.

No it’s all over social media.

People have been filming themselves buying up BBQs and having them in parks etc just to show how ‘cool’ they are.

COVID was an extraordinary situation that lasted two years. In hindsight, we can now acknowledge that some of the measures were unnecessary.
Now, with the wildfires, it seems like a bit of a novelty here, but look at what’s been going on across the continent for at least the last decade. Most wildfires are started accidentally by people not properly disposing of cigarette ends, leaving BBQs unattended, etc.
You might find the alerts a bit over the top now, but you’ll get used to them. Unfortunately, this won’t be a two-year event.

I bet you’ll be the bbq police one day 😅

Majority of wildfires are caused by human activity yes. But not BBQs.

Majority of human causes of wildfires:

  • agricultural burning/land clearing
  • arson
  • farm and industrial equipment (sparks from diggers or logging equipment or tractors, that sort of thing)
  • electricity infrastructure

and only then - campfires, fireworks, cigarette and last are BBQs

Whilst my comment was a joke, I can't believe people are actually do it, well I can because Brits will queue for anything as soon as there is demand. Just look at solar eclipse glasses.

This was before they were officially banned.

The ban has only been in for a few hours but they had threatened it for a couple of weeks (hoping people would use their common sense).

People are using them still just to ‘fight the system’

You've misunderstood the OP.

In what way has the OP been misunderstood? They are comparing the alert and warnings about not being reckless and starting fires, which have destroyed swathes of the countryside and people’s homes, to Covid restrictions. Starting fires when the country is tinderbox dry is incredibly reckless.

She’s comparing hysterical reactions. And they are quite similar.

no one has banned reusable garden BBQs

Agree.

Its the hoiking of judgey pants, holier than though attitude. People are seeing themselves as bastions of moral perfection and looking for opportunities to report others for their failure to comply.

Absolutely moronic post
People just don’t want things to burn down.
Not wanting things to burn down is quite normal.

Where did you get this information?

As from what I’ve read, all of the wildfires in the UK this year (or vast majority) have been from bbqs, cigarettes, campfires, fireworks etc
