to think that actually, no "everyone" does NOT unpack on holiday!

My sister and I have very different views on this!

She and I have gone away many times, always for a week.

She always spends a good hour or so unpacking, setting stuff out etc on arrival and then a couple of hours repacking before we leave. I just live out of my bag/case and dirty clothes folded into a plastic bag when I take them off to chuck back in the case at the end of the week. Repacking takes less than half an hour. The only item I unpack is my "going out" dress, of which I only take one.

She thinks I am abnormal as "everyone unpacks!" I think its probably more like a 50/50 split and when you only have a week, time is of the essence so I prefer to use the time to holiday (made up verb of the week) than fanny about putting my knickers and socks in a drawer!

It would depend on what time I arrived. When I travelled in the middle east I often arrived in the early hours so I just went straight to bed, When I got up I would usually try to negotiate for a better room with the management and the fact that my case was still packed was leverage. I just carried it to another room.

So far as unpacking is concerned I unpacked the items I immediately needed, hung my clothes in the wardrobe, and left everything else in the case. In packing up I returned items to the case when finished with as I went along. So only a few things to put in the night before.

When you travel solo you learn to be very disciplined.

The people I’m on holiday with have unpacked and put everything away.

This is just plain strange to me.

I unpack. But it literally takes 10 minutes. Same for repacking. Or even quicker, I just throw everything in, no need to fold and arrange stuff cause I know it’s going straight in the wash.

4 years of backwards and forwards as a weekly boarder at school I never unpacked. Maybe for the long vac.

I'm in the live out of a case camp.

I backpacked a lot when I was in my 20s. Between varying lenghs of staying in one place, staying in dorms and having limited belongings with me, unpacking wasn't ever a thing.

It still doesn't enter my head to unpack. DH on the other hand will immediately start hanging his clothes up.

Strangely though when I return from holidays, I unpack as a matter of urgency. I really dislike unpacking and and seeing full cases on my floor, really stresses me out and I want to get it done as quickly as possible.

Once we do unpack I stand an empty case upright in the corner of the bathroom, zipped up almost fully but with one little hole on the top. Then we “post” dirty washing into the case as we go.

I cannot tell you how easy this makes packing at the end of the holiday. Last time I didn’t even have to open that case. Just put all the unworn stuff plus toilet bags etc into the second case, and all the dirty washing was in the same case when we got home.

I only unpack if I’m away for longer than a week. I rarely do that so I usually live the case. Just take out the toilet bag and maybe linen trousers.
repacking takes me 10 mins. I chuck it in as I pack light and don’t have unworn stuff

People who holiday in locations luxurious enough to have space for unpacked belongings tend to. I am not in this category.

Yeah, I did that the first time I went on holiday with friends at 18. Then the next year I was grown up enough to unpack, as I like to be able to find things easily and look after my clothes. It takes half an hour at the most though, not an hour, and only about 15 minutes to repack!

I definitely do not unpack. I'm also afraid if I hang things up in the wardrobe or put stuff in hotel drawers I'll leave half my stuff behind me.

I'm 3 weeks into a 5 week holiday tour.

No unpacking for me. I've got better things to do whilst I'm away than to unpack and repack.

Best way. More hygienic. Wardrobe may be dirty.

I also live out of my case , dirty clothes go in a laundry bag .

I do both... if staying any length of time (eg a week or more) I unpack, if less I live out of the bag (also with exception of creasable items that are hung up).

I don’t unpack and my dirty washing goes into a separate bag.

Im an unpacker. Although its more a gradual process. So hang things that need hanging and lob the rest in drawers as I need to get things out.

But last year, I used packing cubes for the first time and am converted!!

If there's space in the hotel room to have the suitcase open, I'd rather do that and use it as my wardrobe. I will hang up dresses if I can. In terms of unpacking, I'll get out pyjamas, and personal care stuff for the bathroom but that's it. Otherwise I lose stuff.

Last hotel rooms I stayed in- Aomori, Japan and Hong Kong- both did not have space to leave a suitcase out. HK room didn't have any hanging space at all! There were some wooden slats decorating the wall between bedroom and bathroom which I guess you could have used as a hanging rail if you brought coat hangers.

Pet peeve is hotel rooms that don't have a coat hook. I know why they do it, but they could do hooks that can only bear up to a certain amount of weight, like psych wards do.

Depends on the vibe. If it’s me and DH in Amsterdam for the weekend to party - we can live out the case. If it’s a nice family holiday with dinner plans then unpack.

My first ever holiday I took a bikini, two boob tubes, a pair of shorts, and 5 packs of cigs because I didn’t know if you could get benson and hedges abroad… I didn’t unpack that time. Now I would say I unpack most of the time, if I don’t unpack it’s a sign that I’m intending to get a lil crazy.

Yeh now I unpack. When I was younger travelling , interrailing etc no i'd live out of rucksack from the floorobe no bother. But I dunno, I now feel like if I don't unpack I wouldn't wear half the stuff - I want to get the wear out of it all & otherwise it be all a crinkley mess left in the bag lol.

I do half and halfish. I unpack nice things and hang them up and my toiletries/hair stuff/hairbrush etc that I’ll use every day then the rest stays in the suitcase

I don't unpack, and I'm actually not sure how people do! Say I travel for a week with my husband, we might bring 5 outfits each. Invariably the wardrobe has 3 coat hangers in total. Where do all the rest of the clothes go?

Currently we would use the couple of coat hangers for things which would wrinkle (shirts, dresses, blazer if someone has brought one) and the rest stays in the case because there's nowhere else for it to go

I will generally unpack. But, the exception is if I’m on a longer, multi stop, trip. Then I use packing cubes to make sure that I don’t unpack for a stay of less than two nights.

Couldn’t live out of a suitcase for longer than that!

I use packing cubes, but hang all dresses, etc. Toiletries ect I pull out and put in the bathroom, or on my bedside cabinet. I get worried things might leak (knowing my luck) onto all my stuff if I left it in my bag.
