The country is full of fucking idiots. Some dickheads near me were setting off fireworks at 1am. So yes it’s entirely appropriate to warn people, as clearly the critical thinking ability is sadly lacking (see disposable bbq user above)

"but I planned sky lanterns for my wedding!!!!"

"But we always have a BBQ on my birthday"

"But why shouldnt I have fireworks at my gender reveal?!"

Jeez the govt can’t keep sending national alerts to just ask people not to be utter morons surely?

Well if people continue to be utter morons why not?

And if you only send them to places currently affected by wildfires, then that is like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

I admit when it arrived my first thought was to look out of the window to see if there was smoke!

Seriously I can't understand why people are saying to turn them off. What if there is an actual real emergency near you, wouldn't you want to know?

And you think that message will stop them?

Gettingbysomehow · Yesterday 19:19

I jumped out of my skin!!! Now I can hear sirens everywhere. Im in Somerset near woods.

TheStepboardisfullofbitteroddos · Yesterday 19:19

I think fire brigades have been called out a lot this week for idiots trying to bbq in parks etc. A few people just won't be aware and this might stop and make them think.

It may well save some time and resources. The fire brigade are needed for actual fires especially crop fires at the mo.

We are not used to wild fires in this country but on the cobs tinent many people lose their lives each year and some are started by silly things like bbq on dry grass.

I completely freaked out and thought World War 3 was starting.

Good thing I didn’t overreact.

Same here!
I honestly thought of incoming nukes 😲

Overitallnow · Yesterday 19:19

I'm in central London. Got it here. No wildfires and I'm not using a disposable BBQ

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · Yesterday 19:19

I did some surveys that asked about the sound and content of these messages and it's nowhere near as harsh as they were planning.

It was odd though.

I was cooking. I feel insulted.

😄

Andy Burnham saw what you were making and thought 'nahhh'

My mind immediately went to war tbh!

I live in London and this was my first thought 🤣😩 mine vanished as I clicked before I could read it and then heard my teens phone go off and I was like shouting what does it what does it say thinking I was about to have to prepare for my life 🤣😭😭

Madcats · Yesterday 19:20

I’m sure we’ve had a few for heavy rain or stupidly strong wind (Bath).

Jc2001 · Yesterday 19:20

Onegingerhead · Yesterday 19:04

Yes, I thought something really bad must be happening...

It is.

JustAnotherWhinger · Yesterday 19:21

Nothing at all in Scotland?!

Are there any fires in Scotland though? X

They’ve been dealing with the biggest wildfire around the cairngorms in years since mid July

Aiming4Optimistic · Yesterday 19:21

As a warning of danger, it's completely fucking pointless if you have to waste time asking chat gpt to translate it. Wales has two languages and alert should be sent out in both simultaneously. And if that's not possible, in English first because the majority (including tourists) will be able to understand it, even if their first language is Welsh.

CruCru · Yesterday 19:21

I think unfortunately there are a lot of morons who need reminding that they can choose not to behave moronically

In fairness, a few days ago there was a thread asking whether people were obeying the hosepipe restrictions and lots of people said no, they were still using a hose. I’m a bit salty about that because we are about to go into the next level of water restrictions (no car washing, no window cleaning, no watering cans to be used).

Did everyone in the UK get them? I think it might be switched off on my phone as DD gets very anxious about sudden loud noises.

Nope. None here in Edinburgh.

CoffeeBotherer · Yesterday 19:21

It tells you a lot about the mentality of some of our countrymen that we need to be reminded not to set the world on fire.

Mitzyme · Yesterday 19:21

My adult daughter and son plus grandchildren received the alert. I only know as they phoned me to check if I had.
l am disabled and on every priority list. No alert. They thankfully live nearby.
I’m obviously expendable.

Specialneedsnightmare · Yesterday 19:21

Nearly gave me a heart attack.

BarryKentPoet · Yesterday 19:21

Didn't get it in my part of Scotland

Shesellsseashellsx · Yesterday 19:21

Be grateful you don’t live in Cardiff which is 90% English speaking but the Welsh Government decided to send the alert in Welsh 🙄 Has no idea what we were being alerted about!

Princessfluffy · Yesterday 19:21

Outrageous abuse of power by the government. Be aware of the risk of wildfires is not an emergency announcement.

Tableforjoan · Yesterday 19:21

FrostyMorn · Yesterday 19:16

For all of you saying it should only be used if there's an actual fire nearby, the whole point is to PREVENT there being more fires.

The twats setting off fireworks nightly here and bbqing in the lay-by sucking on their nos bottles will give zero fucks about this alert. Because they do it every single night.

We know where the hydrant is, we know how to use it. We all locals have our hoses ready to go this alert will do fuck all for us.
