When I first heard it I thought it was the end of the world 😭 Then I saw it was about wildfires and thought there was one nearby. Had two heart attacks in about 5 minutes.

No, it's switched off, DH did, there is no wildfire near us though

I feel that’s a bit over the top. A government alert system should be for something huge not a don’t let off fireworks, don’t have disposable bbqs. Feels a bit nanny state.

Hilariously straight after the alert I got this.

It doesn't help that the alert vanishes when you click it - which is my instinct to stop the noise. Ours came out in Welsh first followed by English a few minutes later. My Welsh is OK, but I need to read it fully, whereas in English I pick out key words from a message flashing up. It meant the message had vanished before I realised what it was for.

Yeah, you can. I didn't get the alert but DS did. I switched mine off a while ago.

We got the Welsh version first. Im in the garden, as are the neighbours (in wales but not a very Welsh language area), all I could hear was a succession of BEEPS then a lot of panicked swearing and poor attempts at translation before the English version came through about two minutes later with another round of beeps 🤔

So if youre a Welsh language speaker you'll have a headstart for the emergency shelters in a nuclear war!

Why on earth would people want to switch them off?? We’ve had them before for severe storms and escaped dangerous prisoners. They can target a local area as well as issuing a national alert.

Yes. The country is a tinderbox at the moment. Hundreds of people have been displaced because of fires and lives are at risk.

the message needs to get out there to be careful. This is a way of getting it to a vast proportion of the population at once. It’s exactly what we need the system for

Bit of an overreaction no? Yes it was surprising. The wildfires are also serious and it's insane that people are going out to dry grass and shrubland, leaving disposable barbecues and dropping cigarettes.

Though I think the government needs to take much more decisive action on things like the farmers warning of food shortages this year.

It shouldn't be for information purposes but for actual danger.
