A poster said on another thread that the local care home was still going ahead with their annual barbecue today.

Gave me one heck of a fright! Our area is one at high risk of wildfires so thought maybe there was one nearby. 😱Also am glad my phone worked properly as for the tests it never went off. Whew. I think it's a good thing, though.

I will give you £500 if you will say that to the faces of the people who have lost their homes in Stourbridge.

Did anyone else click ok to stop the noise but then the message disappeared instantly so I didn't read it.

Anyway I think it probably has hit national emergency level as so many fires locally, my fire fighter friend is constantly on shouts. But I'll be pissed off it it turns into common sense message alerts.

Pressed phone quick to make noise go away, message disappeared, can’t find it in Alerts. I’d rather have a quieter message I could actually read…

For all of you saying it should only be used if there's an actual fire nearby, the whole point is to PREVENT there being more fires.

I think it was a misuse of it. It’s meant to be for immediate danger not telling/ warning people about a generic danger

By a national alert do you mean all of the UK or just England? I got no alert and I'm in Northern Ireland. We did get one over a year ago when we had a red warning regarding wind.

I was about to say this. That fire spread from a golf course. 19 homes gone just like that.

I think it's unfortunate that we have mindless/careless people who literally NEED an alert to make them aware of how serious having a fire could be. Kinda disturbing. And how many will do it still, for the shits and giggles. People are just too stupid for their own good.

My heart dropped and I felt my mind getting ready to take in... Terrorist threat locally? Civil war locally? Bombs incoming? A fricken fire alert when there's none anywhere near me. I understand why they've done it but next time I won't expect a serious, immediate emergency... Though it's made me feel like I need a plan of action for if ever the worst alert comes through...

Nothing in Scotland, but we have definitely had one before for winter storms and gales.

I thought the system was meant for Nuclear attacks or alien invasions, not an arm of the Nanny state to tell us not to have bbqs. .

19 homes were destroyed in the Stourbridge fire last night and multiple people taken to hospital. A lot of people are thinking it’s just grass and fields on fire, but it’s not.

The fires on the news last night actually sparked a conversation on our village WhatsApp about the overgrown trees and bushes and how easily they could currently assist on spreading fire around the village. I think a few (that are meant to be tended to by the council but have been ignored for the last couple of years) will be getting trimmed back by villagers over the weekend as a precaution

How many fields, moors and houses need to burn to ash before it becomes an emergency?

It is an emergency, the fire service is at breaking point in most rural areas and people are still barbecuing in their back gardens and throwing fag ends out of car windows.

Farmers are fighting a bluetongue epidemic and don't need to be racing around putting out fires in crops on top of that.

I don't think people realise how dry it is out there in the countryside!
