Omg? First use of the government phone alerts, i think??

If you cant have a shock and a giggle at a time like this, when can you?!

We live in Wales and don’t speak Welsh. It took at least another 5-8 mins for the English version to arrive. Unless the Welsh government is running a covert op to eliminate English speakers in a genuine emergency it would be sensible to put out the English one first. We couldn’t even copy the text from the notification for google translate.

Shit myself at the noise.

Then shit myself my phone had a virus.

Then shit myself when I realised it was a government alert.

Then read it and was glad everyone has been told to back off the BBQ's because the fire service are run ragged - they're not free to come running right now if you accidentally set fire to your fence whilst cremating a sausage!

Yeah I’m with you. Just ridiculous people are whining about an alarm for a few seconds when people have lost their homes.

Exactly. It gave me such a fright that my panic instinct was to make it go away. But then I hadn’t read it.

It's trying to prevent further danger, houses have been destroyed, people, including a child are in hospital. It could happen anywhere if people aren't careful and so is warning proactively against danger. The gov will know some of the causes of these fires and so it makes sense to warn people to prevent further fires.
I'd much rather have a warning text than watch more houses burn. Look at fires abroad, it could get much worse given the ground is tinder at the moment.

We're in a pub somewhere with a very poor phone signal. 2 alarms went off and everyone was asking what it said - it's quite unsettling to hear the alarm but not know what it's for. I needed to know if I should hide under my table or not 😂

Alarms are still going off intermittently here as they pick up signal.

Wouldn't want to infantilise you by telling you something you can Google yourself.

Half the people whining say they switched off the alerts years ago. 🤣. Clearly desperate to know what it said so they decided to read this thread.

It’s more about being put into fight or flight mode unnecessarily. Though if this is the best way to get the message across not to cause fires, I support it.

We were recently in Canada and received an emergency alert saying a child had been kidnapped from a nearby town and giving a description of the perpetrator. So would never turn them off because that’s the kind of thing I do want to be alerted to immediately.

I thought it was very poorly done in Wales, the alert went out in Welsh first with a long wait before the English language version arrived.

I wholly believe in encouraging the Welsh language to grow, however emergency alerts is not the moment to die on that hill when the overwhelming majority of the Welsh population (currently) cannot read Welsh well enough to understand what is being said.

Not the first time we've had them in our area, also had them for the floods. I remember turning the alert off on my old phone as youngest was a baby at the time and my Autistic child wouldn't have coped with the noise but heard them as DP and oldest DD had theirs switched on.

Forgot to switch it off on my new phone but luckily we were in the garden this time and it didn't seem as loud/startling. We are surrounded by 2 mountains on fire and had to close our windows last night as smoke so bad. Wind is blowing the opposite direction today so not as bad but the fires are awful here in south Wales. It didn't help as other people have said that it came up in Welsh first and second time and it's not really a Welsh speaking area and there was at least 5 minutes until they sent the alert in English on the 3rd alert.

Im not at work today but we all have to leave our phones in a locker in reception and so I dread to think how confused the receptionist would have been when 20+ phones would have all gone off very loudly together 🤣🤣

I live in The New Forest and they have been fighting a huge fire for almost a week now and whilst they are still there another one a few miles away happened because of a disposable bbq! And that’s not including the 3 bungalows that went up last week too (this was arson but went up way quicker than if the bush that was set fire to wasn’t so dry). Then there was another on on the Isle of Wight last week and one a couple of days ago near Portsmouth. And that’s just Hampshire! (Well the big one spans the Hampshire/Dorset border)

This 100%. If there is a situation that could end your life in a short timespan, you need to understand it as soon as you read it. Use Welsh for any other purpose, but not for this.

Not ideal if the warning was for an incoming nuclear bomb though is it?

I cant believe the reaction on here !!! Better switch your fire alarms off if you and your families are so ridiculously sensitive to a little alarm !!! How do you all get through the day ? And I work in a school for kids with special needs and they deal with regular practice alarms . Its not a government conspiracy its just a 2 minute noise to say please be carefull as people's houses are burning

I had no idea what the noise was, I thought 💭 hadn’t shut the freezer door properly. I checked it twice 😂😂
