Government alert?!?!

Omg? First use of the government phone alerts, i think??

I turned mine off when they were first introduced. I have a horse and had visions of ending up in the next county if it goes off whilst riding😁.

Am extremely worried about the effects of this drought , been feeding hay all summer as no grass at all. Much, much worse for farmers though!

Even more terrifying when it arrived in Welsh only. Busy 5 minutes for google translate til the English version turned up.

I am so anxious. But tbh thats nothing compared to how id feel should there actually be a fire!

The warning is intended for fires, floods, chemical leaks etc not nuclear war.

How come I didn’t receive an alert on my iPhone? I’ve checked Notifications and they’re switched on.

Experience from customer service industry provided me with decades of anecdata about how often "normal" people's brains disengage... Often. So if alert snaps them back in, great🤷

I was reading that farmers are having to use up their winter food now. It's scary.

Haven’t had it since the first time today, but I am probably jinxing myself. I remember this was an issue when they were testing the alerts as well with some people.

I wonder if the fire service is beginning to struggle (its been stretched for a while) but every day we have seem to have a wildfie close to our village in one direction or another and on in our village My firefighter friend is doing really long stretches and its tiring. He did 7pm til 5am last night in a heath fire and 2 hours sleep then off to another one.

I'd rather know, I don't see the problem with alerts. People don't realise how serious wildfires are, and some people are idiots and don't think about their actions. If you can't cope with an alert, how are you going to cope with an actual wildfire or other emergency?! People used to talk about the Blitz spirit, I don't think they would have got through it by complaining about safety alerts.

I’m really surprised about reactions to this. I’ve lived in several EU countries over the last few years and the alerts are used extensively for things like this and people are fine with it.

How many have you had before?

I work aligned to Emergency Planning. There is a very strict set of protocols and procedure to follow before using this system, culminating in COBTA. It won’t have been done lightly.

Fire services around the country are on their KNEES. There isn’t enough PPE in circulation to keep everyone safe, and firefighters are working overtime round the clock to try and keep on top of it.

Right now, my husband is fighting a wildfire, his third of the day. Just like yesterday, just like tomorrow. And they are STILL getting callouts to dickheads having bonfires and bbqs gone wrong. And they weren’t sitting around on their arses before all this, either! God help any of us if we need them to assist at an RTA, or an electrical fire or anything else, cos they’re just too thinly stretched. Things will break.

Anything the Government can do to raise awareness of the terminally stupid about the additional risks right now is just fine by me.

Agree. There’s a load of numpties who think the fires don’t apply to them. Or so stuck to Tik tok and what not they’re not in touch with actual news.

im hoping the alert system can be used locally too so that they can alert us if there’s a bad one close by and we need to evacuate.

I work with vulnerable women. Some of them have phones that they keep hidden from their abusive partners or family so they are able to access support and advice. If the abuser knew about their phone the abuse would be likely to escalate. When the alerts came in a lot of work was done by domestic abuse support agencies to make sure women were aware how to turn alerts off.

I know that most people who turn off alerts aren’t in this situation, but there are some legitimate reasons to be able to do so

Yes because idiots are out there burning fires! One of my neighbours had a fire pit last night and the other likes to burn his rubbish on lovely warm summers evenings...hopefully those alerts might shock some sense into them!
