To ask if you think the prime minister has a democratic duty to house asylum seekers in middle class areas

By which I mean, would most voters support this as opposed to a change in policy to refuse in greater numbers? I honestly can't tell what "the majority" actually wants. I would prefer fewer having seen how things went in Germany thanks to the Merkel wave but I am willing to believe I'm a backwards old boomer and a majority would be more welcoming.

They (UK governments) tend to say they have no choice due to the echr but this isn't true. There are a lot of operational choices they could make (eg sometimes when people are denied entry at the border they are actually allowed into the country for a few days and instructed to report back to the airport when it's time for the removal flight).

We need to reduce legal immigration and stop illegal altogether.
and these people are not asylum seekers. They are illegal economic immigrants.

This country is changing rapidly before our eyes - and not in a positive way at all

It is and if anyone says that's racist, tough.

I’d prefer fewer asylum seekers in the UK but yes, I think it’s only right that their are spread over all socioeconomic areas, so that the champagne socialists who vote for more immigrants actually have to live with the consequences of what they vote for - positive or negative.

In which case site them all next door to Green, Lib Dem and Labour Councillors and MPs.

They will love the massively above normal rates of crime they bring (25% of sex crimes committed by non British) etc etc.

It isn't a duty, but I'm sure it WILL be a pleasure. Never underestimate how much the British left hate, and I mean HATE, middle-class English people, especially in the south east of England. The thought of ruining their lives by dumping hundreds of young men on them brings them absolute joy.

The left pose as morally superior, and think of themselves as 'the goodies', when in reality they are more hate-filled than any Trump supporter. But because their hate is directed towards middle-class Daily Mail readers, somehow it doesn't count. Not only are they hate-filled, they're also breathtakingly intolerant. A speechwriter for Blair said their plan was to "rub the right's nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date." Spoken like a true fascist. Either you agree with us, or we'll ruin your life.

Couldn’t agree more. Such a good time they are having too, watching their hateful imposition of VAT on private education resulting in the closure of many schools. Hate-filled and intolerant is spot on, and they think they won’t be affected by their spiteful policies eventually, so stupid with it.

I agree, it probably does mean majority white. If so, I don't know why he didn't just say that instead of evoking the name of the Middle Class and potentially upsetting them, when he could have just said some places are just too 'White British' and had them all clapping along like seals instead.

come straight out and saying “majority white areas” would be way too obvious.

Most people identify as working class and “middle class areas” conjures up images of wealthy out of touch hippies who “voted for this” anyway.

(can anyone remind me when the election for unlimited migration was held?)

What is the basis for this claim? If they are navigating the same visa scheme why do you think they won't be paying their way? Is there are known issue with dependent Saudis, Kuwaitis, Egyptians, Qataris in the UK?

No you are right but I do think some of the economic migrants might not be as impoverished as they make out and expect the UK taxpayer to pay for everything

BeatrizBoniface · Yesterday 14:51

The UK have many options within ECHR - they could take a look at Danish policies to start with.

..and it's not the Danish right wing that have done this, either..

Danielyeye · Yesterday 14:52

JHound · Yesterday 14:05

Why do you assume that? Maybe it is what it means - solely 'Middle Class'.

The response here is weird. Whenever this topic comes up people whine about how those who support asylum seekers are wealthy and affluent and why are they always housed in poor areas with people who have to deal with the issue. And then a politician takes that on board and decides affluent areas should not escape their share and that is an issue too?

By “middle class areas” he means areas that are majority white. They’ve already been bitching that the countryside is too white for a while now.

Most people identify as working class so saying “middle class areas” will just conjure up images of wealthy out of touch hippies. Therefore making this one more palatable to the population

The people saying it is racist are starting to be very much the minority I’m noticing. Give it a few more months and they’re going to have to STFU online.

The policy is sensible because many parts of the country are still heavily lacking the benefits of diversity and by increasing the proportion in a more fair and balanced manner, everybody in the country gets a share in the beauty of multiculturalism.

Oh God here she goes again.

Seem to have jumped from asylum seekers to immigration here.

Most immigrants are on student visas or work visas. Others are dependents. A small minority <10% are asylum-seekers or refugees.(source of data)

Students contribute hugely to universities and to the wider economy. (report)

Workers are important for key industries e.g. 36% of NHS doctors and 30% of nurses are non-UK born (immigrants). (report)

Just to clarify.

I think this one is particularly sickening. They have literally got refugee status, and this is how they choose to behave.

By stating this, it suggests he expects the situation to continue for some time to come. It is not the right message to send. A negative one.
He needs to send a positive message. That he will gather together people with the imagination, the ideas, to practically resolve the issues. No doubt they know what they cannot do. But what can be done ? And how ?
Find solutions Mr Burnham. Do not normalise a situation people are unhappy with. And expect people to expect it to become usual.

Well I mean there was a far right plot just a few weeks ago to target an Islamic event where a bunch of white (you might refer to them as 'native') British men got arrested, so I think that proves that we are all as bad as each other actually.

"I’d prefer fewer asylum seekers in the UK" - no argument there.

Those seeking asylum would probably also prefer not to have to leave their countries too, so I don't think anyone would disagree with you. Over the last 10 years, Iran followed by Pakistan, Afghanistan, Eritrea, and Bangladesh have been the most common countries of origin.

The vast majority of refugees are in neighbouring countries - Colombia (from Venezuela), Türkiye (from Syria, Iran), Uganda (from the Congo), Pakistan & Iran (from Afghanistan). So internationally, our poorer neighbours shoulder the burden disproportionately. Of those that arrive in the UK, it appears that our poorer neighbours also shoulder the burden disproportionately. No, it does not seem fair.

I certainly would be in favour of sharing the burden more equally. I'd add a few practical points. The UK forbids asylum seekers from working, unlike Sweden where they can work as soon as they apply for asylum. This means they can't support themselves financially, have nothing to do all day & may be tempted to work illegally.

Incidentally, I recently got in touch with an old schoolmate of mine. I learnt that he fled Northern Ireland shortly after he left school because of paramilitary threats and went to the US. In effect he was fleeing fear of persecution. Years later he ended up back in the UK (not Northern Ireland). It doesn't just happen to other people.

Unfortunately, the government does not agree ,and has 3 more years to make things worse

One despairs. Luckily I am almost 60 so I may have twenty or so years left.

I'd be interested in what the religion is of these people are

Top Overall Nationalities

Pakistan: Accounts for about 10% of total claims, with many applicants having initially entered the UK on work or student visas.
Eritrea: Accounts for about 9% of claims, making up a large share of small boat arrivals.
Iran: Represents roughly 8% of total applicants.
Afghanistan: Makes up about 7% of total claims and a high percentage of channel small boat arrivals.
Bangladesh: Accounts for roughly 6% of claims.

Small Boat Arrivals
Over half of the people arriving via small boat crossings across the English Channel belong to these five nationalities:
Eritrean (19%)
Afghan (12%)
Iranian (12%)
Sudanese (12%)
Somali (10%)

Isn't Islam the religion of the majority of these countries? What will happen when Islam becomes the majority religion in the UK?

As we know it is not a religion known to be kind to women, who are considered to be second class citizens.

CurdinHenry · Yesterday 15:07

Wingingit73 · Yesterday 15:03

Yep. There is room.

I mean I don't agree where I live, which is really overcrowded and difficult for essential workers to live, but even if there were "room" I still don't want to live with people who think I'm inferior to them because I've got female genitalia!

Sadly one aspect of the NHS strikes which the media failed to talk about was the lack of jobs for those coming out of our medical schools. They wanted more money too but they also wanted jobs.
A friend of ours who successfully came out of medical school seriously had to consider going to Canada or Australia for a job. She is sorted now.
The NHS seems to fill posts with overseas people first before our medical schools have finished.

What I hate the are women defending by saying well we have English men that abuse women and children. Yes we do but why add to the mix?

I think housing in old army bases is a good idea but they shouldn’t be let out to mix with the general population. We had 500 migrants put in hotels where I live and it was awful, harassing women including underage girls. I suppose the only thing is leafy area tends to be more liberal minded so if they are then I’m sure they won’t mind.

Anyone that turns up with no papers should never be allowed in. I quite like how Poland just won’t put up with a lot of immigration.

The doctors, nurses and social care staff who work in the UK, is just another area of exploitation by paying staff poorly and keeping wages low.
