To ask if you think the prime minister has a democratic duty to house asylum seekers in middle class areas

By which I mean, would most voters support this as opposed to a change in policy to refuse in greater numbers? I honestly can't tell what "the majority" actually wants. I would prefer fewer having seen how things went in Germany thanks to the Merkel wave but I am willing to believe I'm a backwards old boomer and a majority would be more welcoming.

They (UK governments) tend to say they have no choice due to the echr but this isn't true. There are a lot of operational choices they could make (eg sometimes when people are denied entry at the border they are actually allowed into the country for a few days and instructed to report back to the airport when it's time for the removal flight).

Quite right they will be criticised when they are seen holding a baby up by its one arm with no life jacket. What on earth is a baby doing in there with all those men. I asked on here if that photo was legitimate and I was told it was.

My post said demonising. I suggest you check the dictionary for the meanings of "demonising" and "criticising". Perhaps English isn't your first language and you aren't completely clear on the difference between the two☺️

FYI by “middle class areas” he means areas that are still majority white.

Class discussions are always stupid I’m unsure what class I’m in personally I earn minimum wage but am partial to the m and s bakery which I’ve been informed makes me middle class.

If he did genuinely start housing migrants in more expensive areas it would cost the tax payer even more than it currently does and many would be asking why they get to live in expensive areas for free when ordinary Brits could never afford to live there.

I agree, it probably does mean majority white. If so, I don't know why he didn't just say that instead of evoking the name of the Middle Class and potentially upsetting them, when he could have just said some places are just too 'White British' and had them all clapping along like seals instead.

Monty36 · Yesterday 14:01

I suspect his Labour voting middle class area in Manchester will not be in the mix.

But possibly expert at not paying their way

What is the basis for this claim? If they are navigating the same visa scheme why do you think they won't be paying their way? Is there are known issue with dependent Saudis, Kuwaitis, Egyptians, Qataris in the UK?

millymollymoomoo · Yesterday 14:04

No
the govt has a democratic duty to protect our borders and its people

irrespectuve of wealth ( of which middle classes already ‘do their bit’ by being taxed to high heaven) who on earth thinks it’s a good idea to house 1200 male illegals next to a village of 400? I mean that’s a recipe for disaster. There is nothing to do. They’ll be hanging around Parks, woodlands, parents will keep children in as theyll not feel damage enough. Teen girls not safe to walk at night, females outnumbered 7-1 .

anyone who thinks that is ok is utterly a fool

use army camps bu all means - but do not let them out ! Must be detained and the govt MUST actually stop the bloody boats

its not good enough that once beautiful cities and towns have been turned into shitholes, now these imbeciles want to do the same to the last remaining nice areas

utterly disgusting

This thread and Burnham’s statement are about the asylum process though not visas.

Why do you assume that? Maybe it is what it means - solely 'Middle Class'.

The response here is weird. Whenever this topic comes up people whine about how those who support asylum seekers are wealthy and affluent and why are they always housed in poor areas with people who have to deal with the issue. And then a politician takes that on board and decides affluent areas should not escape their share and that is an issue too?

I will expect to see some Labour middle class areas in the mix.
But I doubt it. A token one or two I suspect.

Read the quote thread.

This is the start:

We're obviously not in control of our own borders. Neither are the rest of Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Even the US is experiencing an influx of middle eastern/north African people. It's baffling. Almost as though it's a coordinated effort.

And what I was ultimately responding to. That is clearly not about Andy Burnhams comments about asylum / irregular maritime migrants in the UK. A lot of that 'influx' are simply migrants.

Eh? So they are surgeons or civil engineers or other required highly skilled professionals and not paying their way? They will pay taxes just like everyone else. I don’t understand what you are saying?

Perhaps very few want to have people nearby after all and it was ok when others had to.

What are your views, happy to increase their accommodation nearby to you?

Dappy777 · Yesterday 14:09

It isn't a duty, but I'm sure it WILL be a pleasure. Never underestimate how much the British left hate, and I mean HATE, middle-class English people, especially in the south east of England. The thought of ruining their lives by dumping hundreds of young men on them brings them absolute joy.

The left pose as morally superior, and think of themselves as 'the goodies', when in reality they are more hate-filled than any Trump supporter. But because their hate is directed towards middle-class Daily Mail readers, somehow it doesn't count. Not only are they hate-filled, they're also breathtakingly intolerant. A speechwriter for Blair said their plan was to "rub the right's nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date." Spoken like a true fascist. Either you agree with us, or we'll ruin your life.

I literally couldn't care less.

But I do think that if they aren't going to block people being housed within the UK while being assessed, then they should be spread throughout a mix of differing socio-economic areas. That way nobody can claim people supporting it are far removed from it.

I thought all of the British left were also 'Middle Class' people. That's the usual attack? Privileged, middle class people who have no idea what they are talking about because they don't live near it?

If there are towns with people who literally could not care less Labour should put the mass accommodation near there.

There is a perpetual conflation on these type of threads between immigrants and asylum seekers. This country actively needs immigration we don’t have enough doctors, nurses, social care staff and many other skilled occupations. These immigrants- of whatever nationality or race - pay taxes, that contribute to social benefits such as pensions, schools etc. Asylum seekers are seeking asylum; refuge from war, persecution etc. I’ve met asylum seekers from Syria who underwent horrific torture, rape etc. and who are now contributing to this country by working and being part if our community. Don’t lump everyone together. And please accept that some people are genuinely fleeing appalling situations, and we as an advanced nation have a duty to offer refuge, as we have done for hundreds of years. Look up Belgian refugees in WW1.

Yes
Because there's not enough uni places for everyone who got the correct grades .
Increase courses and reduce immigration in those areas over time

I don't live in a town - I live in the UK's largest city so I am sure I would barely notice any difference anyway.

millymollymoomoo · Yesterday 14:18

We need to reduce legal immigration and stop illegal altogether.
and these people are not asylum seekers. They are illegal economic immigrants.

This country is changing rapidly before our eyes - and not in a positive way at all

This would make sense if they were being sent to rich Labour and Green areas, but I'm not sure the people who "support asylum seekers because they “don’t live anywhere near them”" tend to be found in the Tory heartlands. If that's where they're all being sent, it smacks much more of punishing people who vote for the opposition rather than trying to send them where they'll be welcomed.

But as he clearly understands that having a huge asylum camp on your doorstep is a very bad thing, it does beg the question why doesn't he just do something to stop them altogether, so none of us have to suffer. However much they earn, and whoever they vote for.

Why do you think that middle class Labour and Green areas will be exempt?

Why are you assuming this proposal only applies to middle class Tory areas?

Yes, as with all public service ‘you can’t please everyone all of the time’. Immigration and asylum are very complicated.

Working with the Home Office, to support refugees and asylum seekers here in the UK, cost of properties is very much at the forefront of decisions.

Where I am LA housing could not be offered for fear of reprisal by locals, private rents are too high and beyond HO limits. The only properties found for private rent were large, run down housing or where the private landlord was prepared to accept a low rent (not usual).

Funding and peoples view of ‘why are ‘they’ living in such a great area/houses dictate but as I said, a very difficult navigation of public views.

I didn't run with demonising, because it's using hyperbolic language. I will leave that to you. @TemperanceWest

What must not happen is that the numbers coming over in the boats become normalised. As if it becomes a usual non news item.
Arguably, as an island we should have a very low number in asylum applications.
In terms of legal migration universities and employers drive these numbers.
