To ask if you think the prime minister has a democratic duty to house asylum seekers in middle class areas

By which I mean, would most voters support this as opposed to a change in policy to refuse in greater numbers? I honestly can't tell what "the majority" actually wants. I would prefer fewer having seen how things went in Germany thanks to the Merkel wave but I am willing to believe I'm a backwards old boomer and a majority would be more welcoming.

They (UK governments) tend to say they have no choice due to the echr but this isn't true. There are a lot of operational choices they could make (eg sometimes when people are denied entry at the border they are actually allowed into the country for a few days and instructed to report back to the airport when it's time for the removal flight).

I agree that the tide has turned, we’ve had a few threads now with common sense prevailing and people openly saying they have had enough. It’s positive that the threads are no longer deleted after a single report and the accusation of racism. I still don’t think it is quite safe for people to express these concerns in real life, sadly.
I can also see more and more people online and in real life no longer bothered when the word „racist” is thrown around because it has become a joke.
we’ve spent too many years being unable to discuss valid concerns because of the political environment. It’s good to see it changing. It’s good to see European politicians pushing back too (Denmark, Poland, Italy, Hungary) .

The number of migrants arriving fell by a third in 2023. And in early 2024, the Irish Governmenr reported that migrant were moving from Nothern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland. So it was proven to work. Until Starmer promptly cancelled it 🙄

I was responding to this comment because it linked to a comment that the only reason this particular base was chosen, was the spite of AB in choosing a Conservative council area.

This base was first suggested by the Conservative government and not connected to AB wanting to be spiteful….

I have heard about this but sadly I think it will just be ignored by the powers that be.

There seems to be no political will to sort this out.

The only two leaders I have seen step up recently (I know Hungary and Poland never let it get to that stage in the first place) are Giorgia Meloni and Mette Frederiksen.

Easy to say, but difficult to implement. There are quotas for some of the settlement schemes but introducing a limit for asylum claims would require major legal changes and conflict with the UK’s international obligations.

Poland is being threatened by the EU on a regular basis and told to take their assigned quotas of migrants. We give you all this money and you’re not complying type narrative. The Polish politicians stand firm and refuse to comply , the country’s national safety and border safety interest takes priority over EU tantrums. All you need is some backbone from the people in charge rather than „oh it’s a bit tricky because the law says…”
