To ask if you think the prime minister has a democratic duty to house asylum seekers in middle class areas

By which I mean, would most voters support this as opposed to a change in policy to refuse in greater numbers? I honestly can't tell what "the majority" actually wants. I would prefer fewer having seen how things went in Germany thanks to the Merkel wave but I am willing to believe I'm a backwards old boomer and a majority would be more welcoming.

They (UK governments) tend to say they have no choice due to the echr but this isn't true. There are a lot of operational choices they could make (eg sometimes when people are denied entry at the border they are actually allowed into the country for a few days and instructed to report back to the airport when it's time for the removal flight).

The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that maybe Burnham is actually a genius and maybe he does want to stop the boats.

It’s already exposing some NIMBY MPs , including those in his own party, for the hypocrites they are - those who have publicly shouted in the past about needing to welcoming refugees, what’s another few thousand, who cares if you have to wait an extra week for a medical appointment etc. And yet now these MPs are complaining about having 1000 men put in their constituency.

Maybe they won’t be so opposed to proposals to actually do something about the boats and our broken asylum system now. Maybe people who
voice valid concerns, who have had to put up with these men in their communities for a while, may actually be listened to rather than just branded ‘racist’.

And maybe voters living in affluent areas who vote for parties who have clearly said they want to welcome more asylum seekers…..will think twice when they are actually given what they voted for.

I was out this morning, looking around. I live in an ordinary place, not terribly aesthetically pleasing, but it is (touch wood) safe . That’s why I live here. 1,000 foreign blokes suddenly arriving? As pps have said, it would change behaviour: doors locked, caution when opening the front door, nervous dog walking, by-passing the playground and no. 1 not letting dd walk home from the bus stop in the evening.

People aren't interchangable units though - making up a low birth rate with a large amount of foreign nationals then has a large cultural knock-on effect that many people quite reasonably don't wish for.

Also the total UK population numbers are high relative to the land mass, particularly the SE feels very overcrowded, and services and infrastructure clearly are not coping with the numbers.

You're right. I was in the Lake District just the other day and was disgusted at the amount of green spaces that were around me. I definitely think we can fit a couple of sprawling towns in there somewhere. Who even cares about nature anyway, I've been reliably informed that it's racist.

Why not a scheme like the one for UK people to accommodate Ukrainians? A small payment for housing them? Ensures dispersal and allows the UK residents to help refugees ( granted refugee status) and introduce them to UK culture.

It would be interesting to compare and contrast refugees planted in different demographic groups. Achievement, involvement in criminality, involvement in community assimilation etc.

We should have low numbers. We are an island.
The numbers of asylum seekers arguably should be far lower than they are.
Statistics which you were previously quoted showed number by population %. Which does not present an accurate picture at all.
We are not the size of Germany, France or Spain.
We have a very high population density.
We do not have lots of space comparatively to much of Europe.

While I agree those who champion ‘refugees welcome’ should put their money where their mouth is, we all know the number of people who would volunteer for such a scheme would be tiny.

The Ukrainian refugees were women and children. The refugees coming on boats are mostly men. Not many people would want to house a strange man, wherever they come from.

We are more populated than pretty much all countries in Europe, bar a few tiny ones. England that is.
