To ask if you think the prime minister has a democratic duty to house asylum seekers in middle class areas

By which I mean, would most voters support this as opposed to a change in policy to refuse in greater numbers? I honestly can't tell what "the majority" actually wants. I would prefer fewer having seen how things went in Germany thanks to the Merkel wave but I am willing to believe I'm a backwards old boomer and a majority would be more welcoming.

They (UK governments) tend to say they have no choice due to the echr but this isn't true. There are a lot of operational choices they could make (eg sometimes when people are denied entry at the border they are actually allowed into the country for a few days and instructed to report back to the airport when it's time for the removal flight).

Everyone will need to modify their behaviour.

It's only likely to come to bear by large contractors buying up new builds.

It supports the new build developers in a slowing market and is cheaper than long term market rent in popular areas.

It also addresses worries about them feeling isolated from a community in rural areas and probably feels safer than being "dumped" into the local council streets, where their presence is less likely to be tolerated.

So it will be more of this.

With the expectation that the naice areas nearby that already own their homes will turn a blind eye rather than upset their own lives.

Tiny Welsh village 'betrayed' as asylum seekers secretly moved into old village hall

Locals were left shocked when a blacked-out minibus packed with migrants turned up to unload the new arrivals

You are probably safer in a relationship with an Afghani man than a British man given how prevalent domestic violence is in this country, so don't give me that rubbish. You know better.

Get a grip. You’ve really went all out with the ridiculous comparison. How many Afghan men allow their sisters, mothers, daughters, to be treated appallingly, no education, rape, assaults, restrictions, how many sell their daughters? How many replace their wife when she dies of exhaustion with a new bride, one younger than their teenage daughter.
Have you seen how prepubescent boys are made to dress as girls to entertain the men in Afghanistan.
Your comment is crazy.
The men in Afghanistan approve of the rules as it benefits them, they don’t care about women.

I prefer not to give my precious time to propaganda from bias western sources. I have a lovely colleague from Afghanistan and she says it's a wonderful country with amazing people. I trust her more than any of you random users that's for sure.

Oh please. Why not take a two week holiday yourself, try out the local culture and cuisine, I’m sure your work colleague can advise you on how to dress while you’re visiting. Oh, don’t get kidnapped.
I cannot take any of your posts seriously now.

I don't know about that. When Russia inevitably invades the UK I wouldn't mind having a couple of hundred ablebodied young men around to protect me and my village from the hordes of Russian conscripts and Reform supporting auxillaires that want to tear down my safe, democratic way of life.

They won't protect you. They'll run away. They've got form for it.

It is a high figure. We are an overpopulated country so looking at it as a percentage of population it gives an inaccurate picture of how it impacts in practice.
If you look at it in terms of size of land mass we have a higher than should have figure.
The point I was making is that we should not, as an island have many asylum seekers at all. That we do has become normalised.

I just checked.

It is comparatively low it appears.

5th in Europe on total numbers.

17th when counted per capita.

I wonder what the numbers of asylum and economic migrants without visa and/or passport are to places like UAE, Saudi, Japan, and South Korea for example. Someone might know.

Why does it matter? They likely take less, others take more. Why compare to either group?

You are using verifiable facts and reality whilst the people complaining are using emotion and what they’ve seen on X. There’s little point as they will continue to believe whatever they want to believe irrespective of reality. Just like MAGA.

Yes, Debbie is very clever, but it is warping the conversation somewhat.

We spend more per person however.

ICE are getting electric shock gloves. They have a button which the ICE officer presses when handling migrants to give them a shock. It's on the BBC website. If Labour doesn't get a grip, we will have reform/restore and immigration officials with electric shock gloves.

You do realise that these areas have been neglected for years and have far less amenities and access to public transport / education and medical
centres is far worse?

i reside in a tiny hamlet in a nice area, the average house cost is higher and there is no council housing.

yet we have zero public transport, no local shop / doctors surgery / the local school breakfast club is ten times the cost of the one in the busy town a drive away. There is no park and nothing to do.

How would any asylum seeker aces the support they need living in my area?
how would the government afford the property which is so much more expensive and how is that a good service for the tax payer

it is a pathetic attempt of trying to gain votes with zero thought.

I'll just pop this through the middle class leftie translator and see what pops out the other side;

"Oh golly gosh no, we don't want them where we live. Not in my hamlet! Keep them with the poors, they disgust me with their football and their singing and their going to the pub to get sloshed every night. Not in my area please. We are respectable. I vote Green, it's not that I don't want millions of third world unvetted men in this country. I hate Britain as much as the next Leftie. Just not here, where I live please. It's too expensive. It's too quiet. There's no youth clubs. We don't have any room. What if it brings the far right to our door?

No we can't possibly have them here. This isn't what i voted for!"

MaturingCheeseball · Yesterday 19:15

I saw that some “Refugees Welcome” people did pull the “It will attract the far right” as a reason for not wanting asylum seekers in their village 😂

MaturingCheeseball · Yesterday 19:16

There are lots of videos of such people saying why they personally could not accommodate a refugee…. It would be funny, but then they are on marches and given a voice 😡

onpills4godsake · Yesterday 19:19

Actually that is not what I have said - I am working class, I live in an area which would be considered as middle class due to the house prices in general- I worK in the public sector and I knwo
the resources and infrastructure asulm
seekers need as I have actually done work with some centres.

the point I was making, was there is no infrastructure which will actually make it far more expensive to rehouse people rurally.

if it meant we would get mains gas, mains sewage, public transport / school transport and have a walkable gp it would make more sense.

No one is actually thinking of what these people may need when they are here.

I believe they get their own GP, so you don't need to worry that you don't have one. They may well also be given their own transport too, I know some centres were.

onpills4godsake · Yesterday 19:30

There is no public transport to these places, there are no pavements - the asylum centres are based in cities and the accommodation is separate- they need to attend the centres for support etc.

the distance from amenities such as shops etc further isolates and presents barriers.

it has just not been thought out - but then nothing in the last 10 years has - regardless of the administration.

Not on that occasion I'm not.

This situation has riled me up no end. Funny though, all it took was threatening the middle class with some cultural enrichenment of their own, for opinions to suddenly change on the matter.

NOW it's too much.

NOW we are afraid.

NOW something must be done.

Brilliant.

20 years too bloody late.

EmeraldRoulette · Yesterday 19:31

@onpills4godsake I found myself visiting somewhere that sounds a bit like where you live earlier this summer

They told me there had been a quiet attempt to put them in that place, but it was deemed unsuitable for similar reasons. I did think to myself that there was a limit to how long that they would get away with that.

they will just provide transport and healthcare. More government contracts
