To ask if you think the prime minister has a democratic duty to house asylum seekers in middle class areas

By which I mean, would most voters support this as opposed to a change in policy to refuse in greater numbers? I honestly can't tell what "the majority" actually wants. I would prefer fewer having seen how things went in Germany thanks to the Merkel wave but I am willing to believe I'm a backwards old boomer and a majority would be more welcoming.

They (UK governments) tend to say they have no choice due to the echr but this isn't true. There are a lot of operational choices they could make (eg sometimes when people are denied entry at the border they are actually allowed into the country for a few days and instructed to report back to the airport when it's time for the removal flight).

In my daydreams I certainly wish that asylum seekers could be housed right next to the Hampstead folk who preach at us about being welcoming to absolutely everyone who pitches up here.

I truly wish people would have the humility to listen to those who do find themselves in this situation before virtue-signalling.

Should say - I have no problem with legal immigration at all. i do fear the chaos which random arrivals inevitably cause. If everyone is allowed to stay - where, in the name of God, are they all going to live? We're always being told there's already a housing crisis here.

Make it make sense!

It appears to have been manipulated so that our youngsters can't afford their own homes, so remain stuck with parents. This has a knock on effect that they can't establish their own family. Add youth unemployment to the mix and it'll bring the younger generations hope of an independent life to a shuddering halt.

Agree with you OP. I’d love this to happen in the gentrified areas of our big northern city.

Talk the talk, walk the walk

It isn't a duty, but I'm sure it WILL be a pleasure. Never underestimate how much the British left hate, and I mean HATE, middle-class English people, especially in the south east of England.

This reminded me of an interview I watched with philosopher Bertrand Russell.

He was talking about Marxism and he said the reason it had been discredited and had largely failed was because it wasn't so much about helping the working class as punishing the bourgeoisie.

I think he had a point!

Seem to have jumped from asylum seekers to immigration here.

Most immigrants are on student visas or work visas. Others are dependents. A small minority <10% are asylum-seekers or refugees.(source of data)

Students contribute hugely to universities and to the wider economy. (report)

Workers are important for key industries e.g. 36% of NHS doctors and 30% of nurses are non-UK born (immigrants). (report)

Just to clarify.

And yet nurses, midwives and doctors who were born and trained here can't get jobs 🤔

The culture of England and Afghanistan are miles apart. Afghani men aren't exactly known for feminism

You are probably safer in a relationship with an Afghani man than a British man given how prevalent domestic violence is in this country, so don't give me that rubbish. You know better.

This is a very stupid comment..things are bad here but no way in hell are Afghani men and Afghanistan any better

GodDamnitDonut · Yesterday 16:33

The only positive of this madness might be that once these „refugees” are distributed equally across the country and start affecting the daily lives of everyone, including the liberal do-gooders, people might wake up to what’s happening and stop accepting this nonsense. It might be too late by then and that’s the sad part.
House prices in the middle class areas will start plummeting thanks to proximity of these settlements, that will most likely have the fastest direct impact on changing people’s minds.

Oh my neighbour still has that poster in his porch. We are many miles from where any asylum seekers are housed.

There's Fuck of Tory Scum Welcome Immigrants graffiti in this very affluent SE commuter town.

Some horrid over-privileged little teenager, I guess.

anyone who is interested in helping can please look up the change dot org petition for Linton on Ouse. There are only 700 people in the village so we need other people to care and get involved. The petition explains exactly what the proposal is. If you can please sign it and support it. You need to verify your email after signing for it to count. The irony is the the petition was rejected by govenrment as being a 'local matter' when it is being enforced by the Home Office with no reference to local democracy. I would really appreciate it if you would take the time to read the petition and sign if you agree. Thanks

How far we have fallen as a society when pure racist hate posting like that is willfully tolerated.

I think its time to exit the thread, I am a tolerant and reasonable person but this kind of rhetoric is making me increasingly angry and it's not good for my sanity.

Where is it safer to be a woman.... England or Afghanistan?

Maybe ask Alaina Hall gave police "key" information about her Afghani husband Sharif Ahmadzai, who murdered that Scottish volunteer worker in Athens.

I somehow don't think she'd agree with you.

To keep the peace. It’s a two tiered system, similarly to the UK. When a white man commits a crime his name, photo, etc are reported, when it’s an issue caused by the new immigrants it’s a random mental health tragedy, no description.
Knife crime, sexual assaults, intimidation has gone through the roof, if you notice you’re a racist.

I live in a very diverse community, my neighbours who were once seeking asylum aren’t afraid of being called racists, they can see we’re not taking in good people, many are running from prosecution. Many have opioid addiction, it’s all hush hush.

We’ve once of the worst pair of government oppositions in a cosy coalition running the country.
National debt has increased near tenfold.

Ireland's national debt is lower than last year and has been steadily decreasing since 2016.
As for the rest of your post it doesn't sound like the Ireland where I live. Crimes involving foreign nationals are publicised. It's just that they are far outnumbered by crimes committed by white men.

I’d prefer fewer asylum seekers in the UK but yes, I think it’s only right that their are spread over all socioeconomic areas, so that the champagne socialists who vote for more immigrants actually have to live with the consequences of what they vote for - positive or negative.

But surely an area is unlikely to be full of "champagne socialists"? I admit that certain areas are traditionally Tory/Labour, but even that has changed.
Being rich or poor doesn't necessarily mean you're in favour of immigration (and what type of immigration; everyone I've ever met has (at least on the surface) seemed happy with my friends and family who immigrated legally, work hard and bring our children up to be kind and law abiding). At one time, anti-immigration was seen as anti-diversity, and more likely to be right wing, richer people?
Yet more right wing areas tend to be poorer now (and even that is a generalisation).
I suppose you could designate areas pro/anti immigration, but I really don't think that everyone, or even a significant majority, in each area would agree with the designation.

The west is always always always a better place to be a woman than the 3rd world.

Not just that but you will also get a beautifully crafted traditional Afghan rug to place next to your Habitat sofa to show off at dinner parties, so win-win all round.

Looks like another non-Labour area...? Guess it's your own fault for voting wrong then 🙄

Signed.

Spoken by someone who has lived with the privilege of having spent their life in a liberal country and enjoyed all the benefits that this involves.

Read about the absolute hell that is Afghanistan as a woman or girl and see how insulting it is to call anyone a racist for pointing out the differences, which are so glaringly obvious they put the sun to shame.

For those of you who haven’t already realised

@DebbieSavage is taking the piss out of the stupid things people usually say on here, but, like Titania McGrath, it looks like it’s real

Because that’s the level of insanity we reached

I do feel as if there might be a tiny climb down happening

@BeatrizBoniface I’m sure the neighbour does still have his poster up

But slowly, I think people are realising

Of course the invasion will have finished by the time they actually realise…..

Well, we could send them abroad for processing somewhere else, such as maybe Rwanda?? We'd already set up that system, but along come Labour and one of the first things they did was scrap the Rwanda scheme!

It was a ridiculous scheme & deserved to be scrapped.
