Not a huge fan of Labour I must say, but this is well overdue!

The Labour Party are just tinkering round the edges. There's a massive pull factor and the migrants will keep coming unless they're deported or sent to a third country for processing. I have zero hope that Andy Burnham will do this.
Also even legal migration should have a cap on numbers coming to the country. I have a sneaking feeling that a lot of them are waved through as it's keys paperwork apparently.

Less paperwork

"these men" and their wives and children will be paying our pensions, which I personally am all in favour of.

No they won't. Most of them will live off benefits, having never paid into the system and their wives will definitely not work, just churn out baby after baby.

Our nearest city is a dispersal area; the villages and smaller towns have a shortage of housing thanks to AirBnB/the holiday industry. I don't think there's much scope for asylum seekers, except those relocated by the city council that bought swathes of the low cost housing estates built for our local low-income families off plan. Rurally, it's about 96% white.

There is a large unused Napoleonic prison but it's deemed contaminated by radon, so probably contravenes human rights.

I live in a very middle class area and would happily welcome asylum seekers to the area. The problem is that any spare bit of land has already been snapped up by housing developers. Presumably if the government wants to set up homes for asylum seekers here it will cost them a lot more than it would in cheaper areas of the country, and then people would just complain about that. There would be complaints about the extra cost and complaints about immigrants living in nicer areas than British people.

People are too racist anti immigration to ever be content with arrangements made for people.

See my previous post but I think that doubling the population of my isolated rural village with a 1500 asylum camp for single men isn't right. i don't think it makes me racist to say that. I think the arrangements ARE wrong and it is a huge burden for a single tiny community. Also because they can't get anywhere from here so it really will fall all on the community. People don't want to talk about it because they feel icky talking about immigration, but it is wrong and I think branding everyone who objects to it as racist is spectacularly simplistic

For a minute there I thought the middle classes were actually going to be given something positive - silly, silly me.

Unless you can supply some evidence, we'll just assume you are spouting Xitter/terminally online tropes. You could of course look at the ONS...

What a great idea. White working-class boys are an under-achieving demographic. Maybe seeing something to aspire to would give some of them a better chance in life.

But white working class boys usually are living with their families, going to school with their friends. I don't know if they want to be uprooted and dumped in a completely different part of the country "where the jobs are". I don't think that's a good solution to the employment issues. We do need more affordable houses and more social housing for sure.

Additionally this whole discussion is bizarre because, unlike America or ahem Russia, the UK is quite a small place with a lot of variation within small areas. Small villages/towns in the Cotswolds will include beautiful expensive cottages for the rich and a lot of rural poverty. And middle class people. Urban areas like London will have streets and even individual buildings with the richest and poorest living at different ends (or using different entrances). Even the struggling post industrial towns in the North will have middle class people living and working there. There really aren't these enclaves of rich and enclaves of poor separated by distance.
You also saw this in debates over places like Maker field where it lost its status as "ordinary working class town full of demonised white working class types" and became a hotbed of "liberal middle classes" the second it choose Andy Burnham over the sexist plumber.

The majority won't be working. Out of the millions that came here in the Boris wave only 16% are working. Most are unskilled and many won't speak English, or badly. If our graduates can't get a job what chance will a migrant have that is if they want to work. They will be getting more on benefits once they're taught to scam the system.

Oh my word. One of the main causes of the low birth rate of our population is house prices. House prices have been driven up by immigration. Basic supply and demand. Compare a graph of immigration to a graph of house prices if you don’t believe me. The answer is really not to just keep importing more and more Africans.

Thank you, that has really made me laugh out loud and I needed it!

Again, would love you to provide some evidence. But you can't.

RosesAndPeoniesAndIrises · Yesterday 19:32

UK birthrate catastrophically low. We must import younger fitter people to do essential jobs and pay taxes.

Does anyone remember when the propaganda was all that we were having too many children? Seems like only yesterday. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jun/20/give-up-having-children-couples-save-planet-climate-crisis

Source please.

Would you like some anecdata? 😁My encounters with more recent arrivals (in my fairly poor bit of the UK) tend to be in healthcare facilities, at work, on buses and in my street. Funnily enough I can't seem to find these unskilled and non English speaking types. Even outside our local asylum hotel they are chatting shit in English. My neighbour speaks 3 languages fluently, including English. She's from India, very pleasant woman, a nurse. This evening's bus driver was Nigerian.

Now tell me about these marvellous benefits... I assume you are on them yes, to know, and you enjoy a similar life of luxury?

How frustrating for you that you would welcome asylum seekers but tragically all the land has been snapped up by developers, you must be gutted, but never mind you can open your own home to them, I’m sure you will be first in the queue to offer up your spare room won’t you?

I'd enjoy it if the "empath" who can't get on with her right wing husband gets some in her village.

But otherwise no, all should be deported before we slide into a complete societal breakdown.

She’s probably getting the spare room ready as we speak…

Oh dear Roses step away from the internet, you have reached the point where you can't tell the difference between the UK and the global population.

Booboobagins · Yesterday 19:36

I don't agree either, we need to manage immigration, not shuffle the decks about where these people go.

Firstly stop the boats, use the navy, pop the boats before they set sail, have an army of people on beaches doing this.

Secondly turn off any help - no accomodation, nothing. Inhumane I know but those not seeking assylum are coming over cos their mates are here. They places they can stay.

Thirdly, turn upside down the process to get in. Anyone not following it doesn't get in. Be strict, be on it.

We will then find out who really is seeking assylum and we can seek to accommodate them.

loulouljh · Yesterday 19:39

No. They need to go.

I just don’t know how this works in practice: we live in the south, in an affluent leafy suburb. I doubt any house round here goes for less than £1.5. So is the government seriously going to spend £1.5 to house 3 young men in a big house with a huge garden? Can you imagine the public reaction? Obviously it makes more financial sense for them to be in cheaper areas.

Don’t worry it won’t be just 3 men in one house, they will carve the house up and make it into an HMO or they will share rooms and bathrooms like a safe house until they get permanent housing, so a house that size could easily house men in double figures.

Persephonia1966 · Yesterday 19:11

What is the "something" that should be done though. Personally I draw the line at sinking boats and drowning people. Apart from that the options are:

  • processing claims faster
  • operating a one in one out agreement with France that enable us to quickly return those with failed claims
  • sending failed claimants back to their countries faster (this meshes with point one)
  • getting France to stop the boats from leaving by policing their shores
  • "smashing the gangs" or trying to crack down on the criminal networks responsible for people snuggling. That requires sophisticated international cooperation
  • international cooperation to eg stop the dingies used to cross the channel being sold
  • open up more legal routes to claim asylum so people don't have to take dangerous routes run by crininals

The really big one is to go back in time and not do Brexit but that's not realistic. The other options are the only ones likely to work but (except for the last one) they have all been Labour policies that the "anti-migration" people have criticised non-stop. I was sceptical that "smashing the gangs" would actually work except that irregular migration, particularly small boat crossings, are down considerably this year, despite the weather being perfect for crossing. Plus there has been a change of behaviour (more people in single boats) which suggests the crackdown is hurting the gangs operations.

The mistake you are making is assuming that the people that don't like calls to drown migrants, or the riots outside hotels actually really want lots of people crossing on boats. Very few people want this. However the actual solutions.that have been proven to make a difference don't count apparently because it doesn't involve being angry so...

Sorry, are you suggesting that I support calls to drown migrants? If so, can I ask you how you’re come to that hideous and insulting conclusion?

I always have to come on these threads and repeat that the small boats are NOTHING to do with Brexit.
Agree that MC areas are expensive areas so makes no sense. Should be detention centres. And everyone tagged. As a minimum.

RosesAndPeoniesAndIrises · Yesterday 19:45

Persephonia1966 · Yesterday 19:18

How have they been demonised?

We had a right wing government in place for 14 years who regularly used the threat of migration/Labour being soft on migration as a scare tactic to encourage people to vote Tory. All the way allowing record amounts of migration and allowing a massive backlog of asylum applications to build up. You also had the likes of Jenrick making a big song and dance about painting over murals for children because it should be as unpleasant as possible

In addition to this you had parties like Reform being given disproportionately large platforms and they talk non stop about migration, Brexit having lost it's sheen.

Are there far left people on the internet who want open borders? Probably, but they are in the minority. The majority of people don't want open borders but also don't want to drown people, and understand that performative cruelty (painting over murals) isn't actually going to solve anything. The people most criticised are people setting fire to hotels, and biting policewomen in the face. Because those people are wankers. As are people that call for boats to be sunk by the navy. I wouldn't go so far as to call them demons. But it's not a workable or reasonable position. Sorry if that offends you.

I’m not going to bother answering wild accusations against me made based on nothing.

But I agree with you that we had years of Tory government promising to reduce immigration who instead did the complete opposite. Many of whom are now in Reform so anyone thinking a Reform government will be any different is in for a disappointment.

TeaAndALittlePeace · Yesterday 19:46

How about stopping the daily boatloads of migrants (with mostly fighting age men) from crossing the channel in the first place. Wasn’t there one with over 200 aboard earlier this week?

We obviously incentivise them to make the dangerous crossing over from France, a safe country, in the first place.

Stop the incentives and they will stop arriving.

Marieb19 · Yesterday 19:47

They should he held in secure camps until they are deported. We have been lied to continually; they're all doctors and engineers, they're women and children, they're all fleeing for their lives. They are the world's poor and uneducated. They can't qualify for visas, so they abuse archaic rules and simply land illegally. They are costing us BILLIONS and it will only get worse when they bring in 20 dependants each.

Brillopadhair · Yesterday 19:48

I don’t see why it’s so difficult, the navy should intercept the boats and take them back to France.
