Not a huge fan of Labour I must say, but this is well overdue!

No I don’t agree. It’s not a race to the bottom.

So more migrants means getting worse?

Because we colonised huge swathes of the world, destabilised large numbers of countries and plundered their wealth to financially elevate our small island country. Many of those countries indigenous people were decimated not only by violence but by the rampant disease we brought.

We then, in most cases, fucked off out leaving immature leadership and countries unable to effectively lead themselves and prosper.

We have also, in more recent times, used our power to interfere in the governance of other nations, start wars under the guise of humanitarian motives, destabilising entire geographical regions.

We are now reaping what we sowed and to do anything other than be humanitarian and accommodating to migrants would be political suicide on the, already unstable, world stage. And, pretty revolting.

Sorry, I didn't get past colonised because I'm sick of hearing it. It's done, the past.

But non- white people don’t like what’s going on with the boats either and they’re quite open about it because they don’t have to worry about being called racist.

I’m slightly puzzled why you said this because I didn’t mention white people

I’m not white. Do I get called racist because of this view on asylum seekers? Yes absolutely. It has happened in real life. oh, and I’ve been called a coconut on here. Apparently, if your ancestors came here legitimately at some point, you’re not allowed to complain when men come here without an invitation.

I don’t know what the pro crowd have in common but both pro and anti come from all groups of people.

It's perhaps time that middle earners got their fair share after years of subsidising everyone else.

That’s what I thought the thread was going to be about! The squeezed middle being squeezed a bit less!

It really isn't and you must have a shocking level of geopolitical illiteracy to think that way.

For alot of people the effects of colonialism and our interference of foreign nations is still felt.

I suppose we could always pay repatriations, but I suspect housing every single immigrant in the Savoy with an unlimited room service tab would be cheaper.

HotGrapefruit · Yesterday 22:30

Well I do think there’s some racist language on this thread and I’m defo a lefty, so hi chums.

However I can see that the immigration system is fucked up. Our local refugee hotel has closed and everyone is now being panic housed in council properties. So that’s taken all the local council housing off the table. Most refugees are young women with young children in local schools. They’ve been here four or five years and their cases are still ongoing. Everyone is being let down.

I’ve got a good friend who came with entire family from a war torn country but on a Carer’s Visa under the Tories - worked in a care home and has a husband and five children (all with significant mental health issues) who need vast amounts of support and benefits. Why the FUCK the Tories went down the Carer visa path - it’s just insane.

But I’ve got no idea what the solution is. No one has a viable plan for irregular arrivals.

Personally I think we all need digital ID if not chipping like dogs but that’s probably a bit too extreme for a left like myself …

"these men" and their wives and children will be paying our pensions, which I personally am all in favour of.

People actually say still this despite the economic chaos we are in. 30 years of mass immigration and we are being told daily we can't afford pensions. Extraordinary.

Supersimkin7 · Yesterday 22:32

So colonisation 400 years ago = 120 million of their descendants housed free in Britain. OK.

Where?

So we must now risk the rape of our women in order to pay back what some dead white men (that we don’t know) did all those years ago. All white people now, who were not even alive then, have to pay for that. When will this payback stop?

Britain stopping widow burning in India was one of our great sins. Perhaps it would be culturally enriching to import this.

Coconut has to be one the most vile oppressive racist words out there. It's used by those who don't want progression but want the 'underdog' to stay in their lane. I'm sorry you've been called that and if you look at many of the other non white people who have been called it, they want what's best for Britain. There's a big clue there x

Word in the circles that are in the know - is that this is not Andy Burnham being “fair”. The govt has run out of hotels/accommodations in the cheaper towns, they are now squeezed and going further out. They will be criticised for spending on expensive hotels, but the media mob won’t go after them as Andy B has already “explained it is all about fairness”.

Dont swallow the headlines.

Interesting and very believable

We did do that - but so did many other countries. Denmark for example, that now has a very sensible "zero" policy.
Having spent time there recently I can assure you we have already taken too much retribution.

Are you not concerned about paedophiles? They are released no one is allowed to know where they live, your neighbours could be one for all you know. Most then go onto re offend!

🙄 silly comment. The authorities know they’re paedophiles and presumably monitor them, and there’s Sarah’s Law, which means people can check. Whereas the men coming over on boats - who knows what they are? They’ve lost their IDs deliberately, or have fake IDs. Many escaping justice in the country they’ve escaped from. Many having criminal records. Many with low regard for women because they’ve come from a culture which disrespects us, so rape is pretty common with these people. Some will be murderers. We know absolutely nothing about them. Regardless, the ‘paedophiles’ you refer to are home grown and resident here. They’re not imported….

People complain about the cost though! I live in a naice part of the south east. The hotels are in demand with well off business people, tourists etc. The hotels are profitable and have reinvested that in smart facilities. To convince the proprietors to accept immigrants the government would have to pay the going rate & it would be expensive.

By contrast, an old somewhat neglected hotel near a poor northern town is probably a fifth of the cost to the government.

Can you imagine the daily fail headlines? "ASYLUM SEEKERS LAPPING UP LUXURY AT £250 A NIGHT HOTEL"

"Let the poor up north have the imported poor in the neglected hotels"

Marie Antoinette has returned.

Supersimkin7 · Yesterday 22:36

"these men" and their wives and children will be paying our pensions

They won’t. 87 per cent of asylum seekers don't work after they get LTR.

Legal immigrants work bloody hard, however, and have lots of children.

Divert some of the billions of the Foreign Aid budget that goes to the particular countries that are disgorging their men here. Use it to collaborate with Europol and try and smash the trafficking gangs. Go to the source. I realise that post Brexit Uk is not a formal member of Europol but it still co operates with it.

I dunno. I often wonder where all the billions in Foreign Aid actually goes, when thousands and thousands of the recipient country's male population seem to want to leave en masse anyway. Maybe some of the billions is used to pay backhanders to the traffickers. I wouldn't be surprised. Now that would be an interesting thought.

I fully admit that I don't know much about how Foreign Aid budget is dispersed or accounted for. However I'm sure I will be told soon enough.

Quite where does it go ? Many countries are struggling because those in power are totally corrupt basket cases and many are nuclear powers and run on religous lines

Maybe in the UN they need to start to address the reasons why people are so keen to flee some places and not others ?

Start to make them accountable.

Maybe we just secure our borders. Even better, stop handing them accommodation & benefits as soon as they arrive and the pull factor will be gone.

Pearshapedpear · Yesterday 22:38

Nope they all need to be deported immediately not housed and allowed to stay.
Nobody should have to put up with these men in their community

This…. Unless they are genuinely seeking asylum

@HotGrapefruit ”Why the FUCK the Tories went down the Carer visa path - it’s just insane.”

can you tell me more about this, please? I was thinking carers are people that we really do need to have here and we should make conditions attractive for them. But the Visa should be tied to doing the actual job. Like literally your Visa gets revoked if you’re not doing the job . And attractive condition conditions should not include six family members…

Having worked in the US, I am so puzzled by how we do things here.

None of what happened centuries ago was done in my name, so why should I and millions of others be told we should pay for the past? There is no country, anywhere, who has a flawless history. A lot of countries suffering today are in that position because of their corrupt leaders. That isn’t something created by us in the here and now.
