AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

VivienneDelacroix · 06/08/2026 01:04

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

Knox was sued for slander by the police on the basis of her accusation that she was repeatedly slapped. She won. The courts decided her accusation was true.

Yes, the police provided food. However, they also questioned her for up to 14 hours at a time with no food or water being provided during the interrogation.

There wasn't ever any conclusive ruling on whether or not she was slapped.

The authorities (illegally) refused to investigate it - meaning there could never be any evidence beyond Knox's word.

MOJ are rare thank god - I can’t think of another so high profile on an international level

they are not going on all the time as you purport

Unfortunately, miscarriages of justice are not rare. There is at least one every week in the UK, and that is just the ones that get overturned. There will be more miscarriages that are never overturned. However, most miscarriages of justice never achieve the profile of cases such as this, the Birmingham Six, the Guildford Four, the Bridgewater Four, Andrew Malkinson and so on.

Cagoenlaleche · Yesterday 20:12

Then why use them as a comparison? In Europe the Irish people wrongly convicted of terrorism were known about for years and vilified by the UK authorities. It's possible that Americans aren't aware of it. The Birmingham Pub bombings were an atrocity that still has not been solved. We see a lot more of the victims' families on the news than those who were falsely accused.

None of us seemed to know about it until the Kerchers publicised it

You think it wouldn’t be reviewed, posted on social media and picked up by the press

Of course it would have the very fact Knox is performing a comedy show around her reason being famous is controversial

And again why not do the show someone that it won’t be so controversial there are plenty of other comedy festivals

According to Google, the first book deal covered all the costs of the debt. It's been a while since her family or Knox have had debt. The debt was approx. 1 million and the book deal was 3.8 million dollars. There's no indication that Knox or her family are still in debt.

Cagoenlaleche · Yesterday 20:21

I don't think Ms Knox is a Comedian. She can call herself one, of course.

Cagoenlaleche · Yesterday 20:22

No. Just leave it alone now. Live a happy life in obscurity. Her kids would thank her.

I can’t think of another international one like this to compare

those cases you mention were known in Britain but unlikely to be worldwide - they all served time

one a week would be 52 a year - I’d call that rare - thank goodness

You're right, there's not one. Which is why the posters asking why she can't behave like their preferred MOJ victims haven't been able to come up with one who's been in the same position.

Cagoenlaleche · Yesterday 20:25

It's true that it may have happened. There is just no corroboration.

The fringe is almost one of a kind so people will want to perf there

well it hadn’t been…the kerchers made it more widely known than it would ever be

ita not a comedy about MK murder - it’s about AK experience using satire to highlight very important issues that she experienced that are important for women and girls

How can I make anything up? Those accepting blindly that the police beat her are not using evidence, just their opinion. I have an opinion that it would be very unusual for a white American teen to be physically assaulted in any EU country by the police. I just refuse to say it's true, because there is no empirical evidence, just supposition and an allegation.

@Cagoenlaleche

It's often hard to follow exactly who or what point you are responding to, as you're not using the quote function.

Cagoenlaleche · Yesterday 20:35

I very much agree that Sollecito was protected by his rich Italian family. It's years since I read the transcripts of his interviews, but didn't he have a weird interest in knives? Knox is correct that she was vilified more than he was because she was a woman.

That would be fine if you didn't also throw in a claim that it seems like it isn't true, whilst also telling other people to fact check. If the findings of the court during the libel matter aren't enough for you, that's convenient fine, but be consistent.

Cagoenlaleche · Yesterday 20:38

It's not true that she won that based on physical assaults by the police. It was based on other aspects of her mistreatment.

Cagoenlaleche · Yesterday 20:40

Sorry. I don't know how it works. I thought it was just a question of replying to a post. I will stop now anyway. It's just a sorry affair really and I wish it had never happened.

I claim no such thing. It's just that there's no evidence for it.

In your post at 19.18 you asked people to fact check, then went on to say it seemed it didn't happen. Quotes below:

Everyone please fact check this...it seems unlikely they would risk violence against an American student

Either of those points would be fine on their own, but not in combination. We can stick to things we're certain about, or we can have opinions without concrete evidence and not tell other people to fact check.

I just don’t think other MOJ victims come in for any of this vitriol - they rather are seen with a sympathetic eye and are never told to go quietly and shut up

did you see that Rachel nickels family publically apologised to colin stagg and acknowledged their role in it?

I can only assume that MK family still believe she had a role in it to act the way they are

But your type do always pick on the woman and are strangely silent on the role of the largely male police force.

And you avoided the question which shows you and your friends have done nothing worthwhile.

My "type"?

I'm not campaigning about the Italian police because I have many other things in my life that I put a lot of effort into, and time is not infinite. We can all list things that other people haven't campaigned for.

I campaign vociferously for women's rights, I run workshops in schools educating staff and pupils about VAWG. I write a well-read substack about VAWG and the patriarchal design of society. I have created a website about children and young people's mental health to help school staff to support them. I have been a guest on BBC radio talking about mental health in schools... Yeah, "nothing worthwhile".

But carry on my friend, you make up your own illusion of my "type". 👏👏👏

Oh definitely. Knox's situation is unique, which is why none of the posters complaining that she isn't behaving like the preferred version of an MOJ victim have identified a real life comparable example. They know.

No, the knife thing was another bullshit claim by the prosecution. There was a claim that Meredith's DNA was on a knife that was in his apartment, but during the exoneration trial, retesting found none of her DNA on the blade, just Amanda's on the handle.
